Visited with my wife on a recent trip to Brussels and Munich.

Tried the following:
Hofbräu Urbock (draft)

Which was drinking well. Tap selection was limited, but not bad for a beer garden. For lunch I had the weisswurst sausage with mustard and sauerkraut; it was quite good. My wife enjoyed her helles lager and currywurst with fries. Charming atmosphere during the day; we lucked out and arrived when the brass band was performing. Made for some nice entertainment. Service was nondescript as you order everything at the counter and pay at the cash till. But, to their credit, we only had to wait seconds for our beer and food. Our overall experience was worthwhile, and we would probably come back.

Spent much of a lovely afternoon here. Another quintessential biergarten. Service is cafeteria style. Bier was from Hofbrau. The walk from the Altstadt was a little further than we thought, but still a nice stroll through the park. Surely worth a visit.

Without a doubt the "Very Best" place to enjoy a German beer! The adjacent park is the largest in Europe... And you will literally see it all! When I die this is where I want to go to!

The English Garden intrigued me with its 4 breweries and/or beer gardens, so the Chinese Tower was the first stop, and it is impressive. The 'oompah' band was playing on an upper level of the structure. Beer and food vendor booths were located on the perimeter of the large sitting area that surrounded the tower. With all of the trees, tables, music and people enjoying themselves, this is what I think a biergarten should be.

There was a building adjacent to the sitting area that housed a restaurant, but we didn't look into checking it out. The pay-to-pee restrooms were in the lower level (outside entrance) so we got that far. The weather was looking uncooperative again (chilly, windy and wet was the norm for most of our trip) so we downed a quick beer (a Hofbrau Weissbier) and headed back toward the Marian Platz area where we could more easily escape the weather with more options for breweries to visit. However, this was the first outdoor venue with sunshine that we were able to enjoy at this point of our beercation. Highly recommended, and if you come here, schedule extra time and hope for good weather to walk to the other breweries.)

Been here several times. That's where my avatar on beer advocate was taken. Giant mugs of beer, sausages, sauerkraut, leberkase, pretzels, etc. touristy, yes. Great times with great friends? Absolutely. Viele Gemutlichkeit!

Beer garden in the middle of a park/garden. Beer is your standard Munich fare, but its hard to complain as even the average beer in Munich is good. Food again is standard, but boy do I love pretzels. Prices are unfortunately also standard Munich tourist prices. The reason to go here is the atmosphere. Nice outdoor seating area in the middle of a park. Amazing place to relax after a nice walk through the park. An important part of any trip to Munich in nice weather.

Despite the average food and beer, the Chinesischer Turm remains an absolute must at the end of a walk on a nice day. Good memories.

Went here on a warm May afternoon and quite enjoyed it. The atmosphere was good and is what I imagine a German beer garden to be like with plenty of seats (half them or more empty but it was still quite busy). They had a band playing traditional Bavarian music playing half the time, with intervals between songs. It was different and quite enjoyable. The quality was as expected with everything being Hofbrau branded and they had a fair selection. The service was poor though as you had to go up to the bar to get a drink, no table service & had to pay a deposit on the beer glass with was annoying. It was nice, although a bit pricey & the fact there was a different queue for each type of beer annoyed me too. Doubt I would go back if I had the chance but it was about the only place within walking distance & needs must.

Went here on a late afternoon on a tuesday. It was jam-packed on a sunny day.

It was crowded and very touristy. I got a half liter of weissbier which was pretty good, all HB products.

I feel like this is the beergarten all of the smokers go to because that is all you could smell.

I had a few nibbles of food form others, the pretzel was underwhelming.

The price of a half liter was 4.90 with pfand, kind of pricey, though 1 euro for a glass isn't bad if you wanna keep it.

This is just a tourist trap, the tower itself isn't really anything to behold, I would avoid it.

Was happy to find this open on a one-day visit to Munich at the end of March; it couldn't have been more than 50 degrees (F) when I got there, but Muncheners sure do love to enjoy their beers outside.

There are few more enjoyable places to have a beer, in my opinion and if the weather is anywhere near-decent the Chinesischer Turm biergarten is a must. I suspect one reason the overall score for the Chinese Tower is fairly low is the fact it is all self-service; don't worry about that, this place is awesome.

The Chinese Tower area is HUGE - seating for thousands - and is served by a number of kiosk-style areas; some for beer, some for food, some for both. Different kiosks will have different offerings, so do a bit of surveying before you pick you seat. If you want a liter beer pick your style (Helles - light, Dunkel - dark, etc) and order it as a "Mass". You'll get a colored chip with your beer, which is your incentive to return your mug to the kiosk; when you do you'll get 2 Euros back in exchange for your mug and your chip. All the beer is Hofbrau beer, and that is a good thing; the Helles is extremely refreshing and tasty, especially, but not only on a warm day. Avoid the "Radler", which is a 50-50 mix of beer and lemon soda.

On this day in March there was just one kiosk open for beer and steering-wheel sized pretzels, but that was enough to make me extremely happy. However, on a typical summer day, you will find plenty of salty rotisserie hendl (chicken) and pork-based products to entice you to become one with your seating area, have a few liters and put on a healthy buzz while you people-watch and listen to the oompah band. Really just fantastic.

Yeah, it is a bit of a walk back into the city center (and from the city to get there), but it is a nice walk, and if it's warm out, you'll get a good view (depending on your perspective I guess) of a bunch of nude Germans (mostly dudes, unfortunately) sunbathing in the English Garden.

All in all a MUST when visiting Munich, and one of the happy places to visit in my mind when I need to....

Right in the middle of one of the biggest parks of the city. It's quite a walk from Marienplatz, though! I'd recommend getting off at a U-Bahn stop to the west and walking in.

The atmosphere is nice, as it's in a park, but it's made for lots of people. If you go when it's empty it could be a bit off-putting as then it's just a yard full of tables. Very efficient corraling food-serving system. I was there during the world cup, and they handled the crowd quite well.

Good food and beer, but not a great selectiion, as it's just HB stuff. This is one of the more expensive beirgartens, and you have to pay a deposit for the glass. Not a huge inconvenience, but something to note. I guess people want HB glasses.

A nice place but I'd pick the Hirschgarten instead for a big park-oriented place, or the Viktualienmarkt if you want a smaller place.

On our third day in Munich for Oktoberfest, we decided to take a break in the morning and stroll through the English Gardens. Pretty immense place. Just about in the middle is the Chinese Tower. Its surrounded by dozens of green table and hundreds of seats. We got there about noon on a Thursday, and it was mostly deserted. Went over to check out the cafeteria food selection. Self serve, so it's quick and offers less expensive options. Got a sandwich, fries, and a mug of Hofbrau hefe. We got a table, but beware the trees. When it's windy, you are bound to get bombed by falling chestnuts. Kind of a hike to get to, so I wouldn't recommend coming here solely for the beer garden. But if you are in the park, then definitely stop by for a beer.

Well this place is a bit touristy but not necessarily in a bad sense.
It s definitely got some good beer garden flair and I always take my foreign friends there just because...
The location in the Englischer Garten is very good and central so kudos for that.
Selection is above average just because they do a pretty good Urbock all year round and you cant argue with that.
The food is not great but as in ALL proper BIergaerten you can bring your own food without any discrimination so you can make it good.

My friend and I visited here on the last day of our trip to Munich. After three straight days at Oktoberfest, Chinesischer was a welcome refrain.

The place gets its name from the giant Chinese tower that sits in the middle of it. The tower's size makes it easy to spot as you stroll through the large Englischer Garten. The setting is quiet and pleasant, even though there are enough tables for several hundred people. Seating is made up of long benches and folding chairs. Nothing fancy, but having a chair-back was a nice step up from the wood benches I'd spent most of my trip sitting on.

There are no servers here. You simply walk up to the counter, get food and beer, and pay as you leave. There's a bonus if you pay with cash. You can leave a deposit to have your beer refilled at a discount. A nice bonus indeed. The food itself is nothing special. Pretty much standard German cuisine served at a quality level a notch lower than what you'd get at most restaurants. Hofbräu München provides all the beer. Four were on-tap this night: Helles, Oktoberfest, Weisse and Urbock. Prices seemed pretty decent.

Overall, Chinesischer Turm made for an excellent last stop on my trip. If you're at Oktoberfest and want to get away from the chaos for a night, this is a good place to go.

I love my job. Especially when I get paid to head over to places like Germany on the company dime. It's not like I'm taking advantage of my employer, in this case it was cheaper to fly on Saturday night and staying overnight in Munich than flying in the next day. So I had all day to beat off the jetlag and explore the city. Since all the stores are closed, a walk in the park on a sunny day was the way to go.

The Chinesischer Turm is in the park and is a brisk walk away from the downtown core. Just head for the park and follow the signs. Plenty of picnic tables all over, my coworkers and I found one near the tower where the oompah band was playing anything but German songs (Viva Espagna?).

No service at the tables, but was quite efficient at the booth. Only two selections were available, the HB Helles and Radler, that mix of Beer and 7-up-ish soda that is kinda an abomination if you ask me, but the ladies accompanying me were happy to drink it, even a whole liter of it. My Helles was fresh and the mass went down really easy. It would have been nice to have a dunkle or something else, but tradition is what it is as my boss would say.

There were plenty of classic German food options, from big ass pretzels to pig and pig by-products in all imaginable forms. Deserts, roasted fish on a stick and plenty of other choices. I didn't try anything because I was saving my appetite for later.

Yes it's pretty touristy, but it's fun, not too expensive and a great way to spend a lazy Sunday thousands of miles from home.

This is one of my favorite stops in the whole area. It's centrally located in the lower middle portion of the Englischer Garten.
Tons of picnic tables, chairs, and places to sit and relax. There's a large Chinese tower right in the middle (hence the name), and on weekends there's a band playing in the tower.
The beer served is HB, which is no problem at all. They serve the helles, weiss, and starkbier (ur-bock in this case) during the summer. All of those are solid choices, which is nice that you can't go wrong.
There's a TON of food options here. All of the typical traditional biergarten food, plus lots of snacks and side dishes I haven't seen anywhere else. They have some "country potatoes" that are to die for. They're a little like thick cut fries, but they have a dill/sour cream dipping sauce that is something I crave from 5,000 miles away. It worth going here just for those! The roasted chicken (hendl) is another excellent choice along with wursts of all kinds or pomme frites. There's also a full service restaurant that's known to be a bit more high-end if that's what you crave.
A great place to spend and entire day and in our last two visits we essentially did. You can spend the day wandering the park and stop off here (or the Seehaus if you want to mix things up) for drinks and snacks.
The place just oozes happiness and fun.
My favorite casual stop in Munich!

EDIT: They also have the HB Sommerbier (kellerbier) along with the Urbock starting in June. I find myself going back here several times on each trip just because I love the park and the atmosphere. It's one of those places that's probably not the highest scoring spot in town, but I'd choose over some other "better" places because of the vibe. On my last trip they were showing the World Cup on giant screens and even though I don't care for soccer - it was a blast.

Was in Munchen the week of May 17-25 and had wonderful weather, mid to high 80's and sunny. So, where do you go on days like this? To the chinese turm in the English gartens. This is the quintessential bier garten in Munchen. Many trees, many tables, good food and bier that is reasonable in price and high in quality. The only drawback is that they only have Hofbrau on tap, but the plus is that they seem to always have Maibock, which is one of my favorites. One must be careful to drink a high alcohol bier on a hot sunny day.
The food is typical Bayern, pork knuckle, leberkase, spatzle, etc. good stuff. When we were there, there was a brauhaus band playing on the second tier of the chinese turm...it was great.

In my estimation this is one of the best bier gartens in the world and a must see when in Munchen. Do yourself a favor and go there...Prosit!

I'm giving service, selection, and food "average" rankings here, but that's really only because this is a beer garden and they don't wait on you, or serve high-class food, or really attempt to provide a wide selection...

That said, when my life is shitty and I need to go to a happy place in my mind - that place is the Chinesischer Turm biergarten. I lived in Munich for several months years ago and spent pretty much every weekend in the Englischer Garten at the various biergartens. This one is my favorite.

When Knuckles and I were in Munich recently, we went here again and it was as beautiful as I remembered it. As others have said, getting to this beer garden is a little bit of an adventure in itself. It's a pretty far walk over forest and dale from the nearest u-bahn stop (which is universitat, by the way). You really have to know where you are going because this place is right in the middle of the giant park. You'll walk by several beautiful streams and fields, as well as a couple monuments on your way.

Like most of the better beer gardens in Munich, there are lots and lots of tables set up amidst the trees. Of course the chinese tower is there to add to the atmosphere. On a warm sunny summer day, this is the life. A liter of beer, friends, sunshine... ahhh.

Once you're done, go lay out on the grass or stroll around the worlds biggest public park.

This place buzzes with happy conversation and the sound of brass band music playing, and people enjoying themselves, but not in the frantic loud (and almost threatening) manner of the Hofbrauhaus at night!
Great place to sit and relax in the warm sunshine and enjoy a beer or two. Only the Hofbrau Hell, Dunkel and Weiss beers available. Queue at the serving counter, take the beer and refund tokens with you to a table and enjoy! There is then a second counter at rear near the toilets where you return the glass and red token to get €1 refund on the glass. Food looked good and reasonable value.

Easy 15-20 min walk through the English Garden to the Chinesischer Turm from the University U-Bahn stop on lines U3/U6.

I visited Chinesischer Turm on an unseasonably cold August afternoon/evening last August and I loved it! This place will always and forever be for me what I judge all other biergartens.

First and foremost the place is absolutely huge. It is sent in the middle of the English Garden park so getting there involves a nice leisurely stroll. The band was playing in the tower (although they quit too early), and there was a good size crowd especially considering the weather. I helped myself to a litre or two of the light (lager) but they also had Helles, and Radler, an interesting mix of beer and lemon lime soda. My only compaint is, why no dunkel? This is owned by the much rowdier Hofbrauhause so the beer is all the same as there. I enjoyed the dunkel the best.

The food here was very good and very reasonably priced. I enjoyed a slab of BBQ ribs and my wife had chicken stir-fry. They also offered a number of other selections from the traditional German to the not so traditional.

If you are looking for a place to relax in a great setting and enjoy a beer or a picnic, this is the place for you. I highly recommend it!

Stopped by here about 2 weeks ago on an early afternoon, with BA UncleAl and friends Dave and Chris.

Damn, what a hell of a relaxing place to visit, especially before hitting the wall to wall mass of people known as The Oktoberfest! Take city bus #154 to the Chinesischer Turm stop, and you are right there! Straight ahead upon entering the grounds is the Chinese Tower itself, an odd looking, tinker-toy kind of building. I'm unsure of its actual purpose, save for lending its name to the establishment. Past a few trees, and the main food stand emerges to your left. (There are other satellite bier stands around as well.)Enter, grab a tray, point at what you want and you're all set. Around the far end of the food stand is the bier serving area. Same deal. Get it and go, just making sure to pay at the Kasse on your way out or there'll be no bier for you! The food stand had plenty of choices, from the typical Bratwurst, Currywurst, Pomme Frittes, Sauerkraut, and Knödels to even Spareribs. Yes, they are coming into vogue at some München Biergartens! I had the Currywurst mit Pommes, and it was more than filling, very tasty, and cheap. The service people behind the counters were more than helpful, especially with some of our non-german speaking contingent. They had "only" 3 biers, from Hofbräu, available, but they are well-made, so why quibble? Helles and Weissbier were options I passed on, settling for the not-often-found Urbock, a blond, strong Bock bier. Damn, it was tasty! For those of you residing in the upper crust, there is also a sit-down restaurant on premises, a bit further to the left upon entering, with a full-menu to choose from. Be prepared to pay accordingly, though! Beyond the food/bier stands and surrounding the tower are a sea of long wooden tables and benches... as far as the eye can see. This is only the 2nd largest Biergarten in town, after the Hirschgarten, you know... ;-)

Damn, it was just sooo relaxing here. We had a great time. Wait, there is one warning I should throw your way. Should you be here in late summer/early fall, and sit out in the Biergarten, beware of chestnuts falling from the numerous trees on property. One, in its spiky little casing, nearly impaled itself on a nearby quaffer. ;-)

Prosit!!

I visited the Chinesischer Turm (or "Chinese Tower") on a beautiful, sunny, Sunday afternoon in September 2005, while I was in Munich for Oktoberfest. The Turm is located in Englischer Garten, a large park with nice walking paths. The name refers to the large Chinese Pagoda tower that dominates this beer garden.

When I visited, this place was full of a lot of people enjoying the weather and the beer. I never had any trouble finding a corner of a table to share, however. There are many tables, some with umbrellas to block the sun, and some under the wonderful shade of large chestnut trees. There was an ooompah playing at the tower itself, and seating closer to the tower was harder to find.

The beer selection was limited, but fine by me. They serve Hofbräu beers at Chinesischer Turm. You go up to the building, get in line, pay for your beer (plus deposit for the glass), and then go back to your table or where you were standing. There are several places to buy beer throughout the biergarten.

They offer typical Bavarian foods for sale, and the pretzels and radi (thinly sliced white radish) were delicious with the beer. There is also a shack selling fried mackerel.

Overall, a very nice and large beer garden, located in a beautiful park. A little bit of a walk from the nearest U-bahn station, but there might also be bus service.

Catching up on some notes:
I hit this place after finding that theres pretty much no way in hell to get into Oktoberfest at 12:01 after it offimcially opens. The setting is really nice, and perhaps because of the time of day/fact that Oktoberfest was going on at the Wies'n, the atmosphere was great. There were few to no tourists, but it was very lively and friendly. Two beers on tap, a Hofbrauhaus Helles and a HBF Weiss Bier. Sold in the traditional liter mugs, which are given out at 1 Euro. When you turn the mug in you get your euro back.

The place ran out of Helles after my 2nd liter, which was disappointing as I am not a fan of wheat biers.

Overall, a great place in a wonderful setting; a bit more off the beaten path than most tourist attractions.

Oh, one problem is that you have to get up and walk thru a line to get your beer/refill, which is a bit difficult to do after a few liters.

Certainly one of the more toursity locations as well as one of the larger ones, the Chinesischer was a fun, rowdy place but not too silly (see:Hofbrauhaus). All the beers poured were Hofbrauhaus and the Helles was pretty decent although not my favorite version of the Helles. The Oompah band played in the pagoda, they are rumored to be the drunkest band at a biergarten. The food was releatively cheap and being in the middle of the Englischer gardens was an added bonus both walking to and from. There were more tourists here but noting was too out of hand and it was a fun time and a nice way to kick off Munich.

warning: I will reiterate what was said. Don't leave your glass lying around or it will cost you a Euro.

Very nice place to have a very large beer (or two). They have a small selection of beers on tap most if not all by Hofbrau: Dunkles, helles,Pils bier, Weizenbier, Radler- a beer mixed with lemon lime soda or lemonaide, kind of like a shandy.

I had Hofbrau Helles which is a nice lager to have on a hot summer day. The place is self serve and the staff are polite and I had no problem using my high school german to order food and drink. They have the standard beer garden food. Many kinds of pork products and huge pretzles.

A liter was about 7 Euros and there is a deposit on the mug so don't leave it on the table unless you don't want your deposit back.

The garden sits at the base of the Chinesisher Turm (Chinese Tower) in the vast Englisher Garten (English Park), which was designed by, you guessed it an Englishman. The germans are so creative with many things, but not language, very literal. They call the swan lake the swan lake and the Chinese tower the Chinese Tower.

They don't mess around with their beer. They offer halb (half litres) and MaS (full litres) and I think they had some bottled beers as well, but I didn't go to a beer garden to drink from a bottle.

An bit about the beer gardens in Englisher Garten

For waterfront beer enjoyment try the Seehaus (house on the lake) Biergarten on Swan Lake. There are three beer gardens in Englisher Park and each one features a different beer. On the tourist map there will be the logo of the brewery featured at each garden. So if you have a preferance that should help you out. The three beers when I went were Pauliner, Lowenbrau and Hofbrauhous they may rotate which is served where. I believe that only the Seehaus is open all year. The third garden, Osterwald Garten, is near the clothing optional section of the park.

I had two chances to check this place out while i visited Munchen. Once was in early May and the second time was in early June. What a difference. The first time had just a few people quaffing beers by the pint or half pint in the sunshine, trying to keep warm in the chilly munich spring. The second time was a zoo. Packed to the rim and everybody scrambling for shade.

By June, the Band was out and the whether in the English Garten was fabulous, making this place all the better. Beers are big and thurst quenching. People are friendly. And the Music sets the mood. Plenty of food for those that wanted it, though i abstained.

The best thing about this place, i would say, is the location. The English Garten is excelent and after a few liters there is pleanty of paths to walk on in the shade of the trees, branches of the Isar to sit besides and lots of naked ladies and old men to watch sunbathe. This is a definate must see if you find yourself in the area.

Wow this place is large! 7000 seats in all. We ended up going on a Sunday evening after spending the day roaming through the Englischer Garten, so it wasn't too packed. There will still a number of people though, but the size easily masked that. I'd like to have seen this place when packed full of people, I'm sure it could have been more enjoyable.

Nevertheless, it still maintained a calm atmosphere which was nice to just sit down and chat. The beer here is Hofbrau. They had the Helles, a Bock, and Hefeweizen when I was there. Possibly more, it's hard to remember. I stuck with the bock and enjoyed it, especially since many of the establishments in Munich only serve bock beers during Starkbier Fest from what I heard.

I would definitely visit the Chinesischer Turm again on a future visit to Munich, plus a day in the Englischer Garten makes it more enjoyable.
