Dark chestnut brown with a finger-and-a-half of tan head that leave sheets of lacing.

Somewhat restrained, sweet aroma of cherry, toffee, leather, fig and carbon dioxide.

Similar fruity sweetness up front in the taste gives way quickly to light smoke, meat and wood in the finish. A little soggy rye bread makes an appearance in the background.

Medium bodied and only lightly sticky feel with decent carbonation.

One of the more interesting beers I’ve had in a while. The smokey character really balances against the traditional barleywine sweetness and any whisky barrel presence. Worth a try.

On tap at Thompson Island Brewing, Rehoboth Beach, DE. This was part of their guest tap list.

Pours a mostly black color with notes of dark mahogany. A modest foam head soon dissipates.

Sweet aroma that evokes caramel, honey and biscuity malts, as well as chocolate. There are some aromas from the barrel aging that are redolent of bourbon and oak.

Full bodied, smooth and mouth coating, with a gentle carbonation. There is sweetness in flavor with doughy and biscuity malts, dark caramel and dark chocolate. Flavors of bourbon, oak and vanilla from the barrel aging, light alcohol spice that makes for accessible drinking, a touch of roasted malts and earthy hops for bitterness. The finish is sweet but dry.

Easy drinking BarleyWine with decent barrel flavors.

Had on tap. Pitch brown with a thin tan collar. Smell infuses the rye, barley, and wood very well, with supporting vanilla, char, slight dark fruit, tons of malt, and a weird.... yeastiness? More rustic in smell than taste, where we find a barleywine that has amazing barrel character, but the underlying flavors falter a little, with the dark fruit being very musty and faint, the chocolate being very bitter and roasted, with the booze driving the finish very warmly. Still good, but could be more refined. Feel is barrel forward, warm, and rustic.
