Bockbeer tasting with rvdoorn. First of all I agree with him that this is in no way a strong Belgium dark ale! The brewery is always in the top positions with their seasonal bock beer.

A: Hazy brown/ruby color with a head not worth mentioning.

S: Caramel, red fruits, and I get a candy cane sensation. Vey low in the roasted malts smell.

T: Low in the malts again, hints of red and dark fruits, cloves, light bitterness and again that candy cane sensation.

M: Medium/high carbonation with a light body.

D: Not a bad beer at all, just wished for a little more body/malts.

Pours a murcky dark brown with off-white head. Lots of big bubbles in the beginning, looks good!

Smell is slightly sweet, some ripe red fruits, but quite light. Then later more roasted bready notes.

Taste is nutty, roasted grains, almost burned bread, some brown sugar and then some bitterness. There's also a little fruit, some cherries maybe. Aftertase is slightly burned again whith a nice bitterness that really works.

Mouth is medium with average carbonation, nothing special but very drinkable.

A nice bock, not too sweet, very drinkable and a bit more complex than most bocks I've had this year. This is a nice beer, too bad it's a bit expensive.

After a visit at Texel island a couple a years ago, I came back with a selection of beers from the Texels brewery and this one was one of the best amongst them. I got it again this year and I realized I hadn't written a review, so here it is.
300 ml bottle, poured into a snifter. Bottle fermented.
Pours a very dark ruby colour, almost brown, with two fingers of thick, creamy head, beige in colour and with excellent retention. Some light lacing is being left at first around the glass.
Smell of caramel, roasted malts and dark chocolate. If you smell hard enough you get an alcohol smell too.
Taste is slighty sweet at first, then turning into a softly bitter taste, leaving on the aftertaste flavours of biter chocolate and caramel.
Full body and as much carbonation as needed.
A grea beer, I can see why it keeps winning "best bock beer" prize in the Netherlands.

Presentation: typical red brown coloured beer, nice head, slowly retiring.
A sweet, caramel and malt noise, even recognized a light bubblegum smell (reminded me of hubba bubba, a brand of bubblegum back in the ‘70).
Taste: light bitter base, malt, burned malt. Mouthfeel: medium/full body, normal carbonation, dry and light astringent sensation. The beer ends in a slightly bitter, drop( I don’t know the proper translation. Drop is a black candy (not sweet) in the Netherlands, Guinness has some in it too) burned aftertaste.
Definitely a good decent Dutch bockbeer!

Tasted this on draft at 't Arendsnest, Amsterdam on 14th Oct 2005.

This was a strange one. Appearence okay; red tinge to dark body, not much of a head. Smelled yeasty. The taste was a bit of a shock; a definite chicory/coffee thing going on. Sort of a strange variation on the seasonal Bokbiers that the Dutch are fond of.

In fact, after coming to terms with the unexpected taste, it started to grow on me. Still, I didn't fancy another. Worth a try.

BBE 08-06. Nice presentation with lasting yellow head and a darkbrown almost black beercollor. Nose is lots of aceton, caramel, sweet dark candy, hops and good maltyness. Taste is dominated by the actone also but next to that quiet good. Full body, lots of malt, fine hops making it mediocre bitter, good alcohol, and quiet fresh. This is one of the finalist of Bockbeertasting 2006 so should be good. if it wasn't for the acetone it would also be one of my favorites. Not a bad beer but seen better bocks recently.

Back to where it all begin.
A few years ago I went on a holiday to Texel. They have this local brewery and I decided to buy a gift pack with all kinds of their beers in it. This got me hooked to craft beer.
And this will be the first time since I got one of their beers.

A bottle conditioned beer, so probably a top fermenting version of a bock just like the La Trappe Bock.

A dark ruby beer with an off white head. And now I just spilled some! A big shame.
Anyway, a little hazy.

Smells of big dark bready malts, dark chocolate, some coffee and just a hint of dark fruits with some alcohol.

Tastes more fruity than it smells, caramel malt, light bitterness and a light hoppiness.

Mouthfeel is medium at best and the carbonation is quite light to medium.

All in all a good bock, not as good as the La Trappe or some German bocks but worth a try.
Not overly complex but the drinkability is quite high.

Brown shugga, off the chain in this one, very delish.

How can this be classified as a strong Belgium dark ale.... This is clearly a bock beer (the label says it, the website of the brewery too). Had this beer during my last beer-taste evening with PapaEugene. This evening, our beer selection mainly consisted out of (autumn) bock beers, and of course, the Texels brewery was also represented with their Autumn bock.
Poured into a sniffer. The beer pours a slightly-hazy, brown-ruby color, with a tiny light-brown head that disappeared almost immediately.

Smell: Light smell, dominated by slightly sour red fruits, hints of caramel and bubblegum.

Taste: Also not too strong. Very light bitterness, roasted malts, and tiny hints of dark and red fruits. Also here candy-like flavors (bubblegum). Aftertaste is slightly alcoholic, and spicy (clove-like)

Mouthfeel: Watery, Medium-high carbonation that tingles the tongue

Overall: Well, I have to say we had this one after Biobok from 't Ij, which simply was one of the worst beers I ever had, so this review might be positively biased. This one tasted good, a decent bock beer, falls into the huge middleclass of this style. Worth to try.

On tap at the brewery. This is an amazing bock and probably better be called a german style Doppelbock. Overall very fruity with notes of caramel, butterscotch, licorice and a roasted finish. All this accompanied by a very smooth and full body. This beer certainly improved over the years and the changing of owner and brewers. I could drink it all evening and actually I did last weekend.

Dark brown colour with a small head of foam that quickly evaporates. Smell of roasted malt and dark fruit. Very rich taste of dark fruit, caramel, roasted malt (coffee-ish) and mildly bitter hops in the finish. There is some alcohol present, which combines well with the other flavours and gives a warming feeling afterwards. The yeast gives a pleasant mouth feel. Due to the prominence of dark fruits and the fact that the bitterness is quite mild, this beer tastes more like a dubbel than a bock to me. But you won't hear me complaining: nice beer, recommended.

L - dark brown, slight haze, two fingers of almost soapy beige head that dissipates quickly to a small layer of froth
S & T - brown sugar, caramel, raisins, mildly bitter, alcoholic sharpness, almost calvados-like, very vaguely roasted coffee, especially at the end when the bitters kick in
F - thin but syrupy, pleasant, nicely carbonated, lingers well

O - very decent. But quite sweet. Almost reminds me of a dubbel. Chimay Blue, to be exact, if it were a bit more roasty and bitter, and if it were less sweet/chocolatey.

I would recommend this one. A nice sipper.

Intense ruby red. Abundant head, brown, compact.
Smell of caramel, sugar, candy floss and strawberry. A lot of strawberry. After a whila, some hop, and rosewater.
Sweet taste, caramel malt, honey, again strawberry.
Medium body. In the aftertaste, after an initial sweetness, not sickly, rises up a decent hop, and also some liquorice hints. The aftertaste is surely the best aspect of this beer, that, for the rest, it doesn't offer too much.
