Had one of these at the brewery in Carpinteria, CA.

Island's Nut Brown Ale is a reddish brown beer with a nice big head. I can smell a little caramel sweetness, but nothing's terribly outstanding. I think it's just a little too subtle for my nose. The taste is good and nutty, but more bitter than I expected. The malt is more subtle here than in many other nut browns I've had. It's got a nice fully body, creamy and well-carbonated. A very drinkable ale.

"Island brewing company's Nut Brown Ale is a gently hopped beer with a malty aroma. This beer is centered between English and American Brown Ale styles, beers favored among working men for hundreds of years. Today, the mahogany color, even flavor and invigorating effects testify to the quality we put in to every beer we brew."

Pours an ultra clear "mahogany" colored brew; it has been obviously filtered.

Smell is fairly malty with a small whiff of chocolate to it. Cascade hops try to hide but you can smell them in this.

Taste is medium malty with a complex flavor of mild chocolate malt and a suggestion of smoke flavor and mild hint of citrus hops. The flavor finishes with a mild and measure bitter finish. A well blended brew that is better than the sum of all its components.

Mouthfeel is good, a little thin.

Drinkability is excellent; it is a brew that just works.

Draft at brewery, consumed 02/18/08.

Unusual color for a nut brown ale: pale amber. No aroma to speak of. Strange mineral water flavor shared with some other beers from this brewery. A little nutty malt flavor, some bitterness on finish. A bit of parch on the tongue as well.

Not a successful attempt, sadly.

You have to like a super sour beer to like this Brown Ale. When poured, it was a medium brown with load of tan foam. The smell was a sour nature with, it think, a hint of malt? The taste was a big turn off because it was so sour that I couldn't pick up any flavor. The after taste was a sour puckering feel in the mouth for a long time. With Islands ale, I'm two for two, two thumb's down and more.

Whoa, dark brown pour, and with a massive tan head – bubbled up like a volcano in heat. Leaving lil’ islands of lace. Then, for an aroma first – this brew has a cola smell to it. Like a fresh Coke popped open on a summer day.

Quaff was a sharp and biting astringent malt shake – not exactly the smoothest of beers that I’ve had. Does have a nutty finish to it. Not bad, not one I could drink a bunch of either. Give one a try for your own experience.

Thanks to Solomon420 for the beer in my BA annv club.

A: Clean auburn chestnut color with a still feel to it. Head started fizzy but mellowed out to a nice cushion of sand colored foam.

S: Peanuts, toast with jam and aluminum.

T: Begins slightly sweet on the malty side with sprinklings of coffee and roasted barley. Transitions quickly to a berry fruitiness on the sour end that makes me question whether this has a minor infection going on. Very acidic on the tip of the tongue which seems odd for a nut brown ale. Overall some chestnut flavors lurk below the berries but they are few and far between. Finishes sweet, sour and lightly bitter with an uncomfortable malt flavoring.

M: Medium body, average mouthfeel.

D: This beer was not balanced what so ever. I purchased it out of a cooler so I know at the time the heat hadn't got to it, but I suppose it could have been mistreated before that. Regardless, pass.
