Bottle pour at the BevMo Holiday Beerfest held at Golden Road Brewing in Los Angeles, CA.

Bottle # 404/540.

Pours a murky orange with a foamy bone colored head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is of malt, citrus zest, wood, and bourbon. Taste is much the same with an alcohol kick and a woody finish. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with a nice barrel aged presence.

Really liked the regular Big Island Barleywine when I had it back in May. Visited the brewery on July 14 (in between a trip to Rincon and BrewLab) and was surprised at how many bottles they had to go. Included in those were this monster (2015 release, brewed in late 2014) and a special 15th Anniversary BBA Scotch Ale. Wasn’t that impressed with either the regular scotch ale (Jubilee Ale) or the 15th Anniversary version, so I couldn’t pull the trigger on that one as well. Would have to look back, but this may be my first Barrel-Aged Barleywine (nope, looks like my fourth or fifth).

Poured a reddish-brown amber murky color with two fingers of khaki, frothy head. Decent spotty lacing. Very good retention. (Sight - 4.00)

Smelled slightly boozy bourbon, sweet caramel, creamy toffee, tobacco, leather, oaky wood, vanilla, butterscotch, brown sugar, hints of maple syrup and honey roasted nuts. (Smell - 4.25)

Taste followed the nose almost to a ‘T.’ Initially tasted almost like an English Barleywine than an American Barleywine. Got buttery warming bourbon, sweet caramel, creamy toffee, earthy tobacco, leather, bitter oaky wood, Nugget, vanilla extract, brown sugar, hints of butterscotch, maple syrup and honey roasted nuts. Got much better as it went down. (Taste - 4.25)

Medium body. Sticky texture. Average carbonation. Long, boozy, warming finish. (Feel - 4.25)

This was about as good as I thought it was going to be. Was back and forth multiple times on the ratings though, but probably poured a bit too cold. Not quite legit, but close. Glad I got the chance to try it. (Overall - 4.25)
