Had on cask at the brewery for first Friday.

Pours a dark, almost black, brown with a nice rocky head. Surprisingly, not much lacing on the side of the glass.

Citrusy hops in the nose - with a touch of roasted malt as well.

Taste is very enjoyable. It starts with a real balanced sweet, then toasty, then finally bitter taste up front. The finish is all hops, with a pleasant grassy profile that seems well suited to the cask format.

My favorite thing about this style is the mouthfeel, and this beer is a fine representation of the style with just enough creamy body to let you know this is more than an ipa.

Overall a really enjoyable beer. Nice way to spend an evening.

Consumed January 16th, 2011 at JJ Brewsky's in Camarillo, CA.

Beer is a very, very deep brown with subtle mahogany highlights. Head is a thin skin of tan foam providing minimal lacing. Some active carbonation.

Aroma is primarily citrus hops.

Beer is exactly what a "black IPA" is supposed to be: like a cross between a stout/porter and an IPA. Deeply roasted chocolate malts vie with what seem to be Cascade hops (bitter, slightly piny and citric). Neither really runs away with the competition, but the IPA side of things dominates slightly. There is also a slightly mineral character that seems to be endemic to Island Brewing's beers. Long lasting moderate bitterness on the finish.

Beer is slightly creamy/soft in the mouth (think oatmeal stout). Slightly drying/parching on the finish.

Easy enough to finish a pint of this brew, but not something you should really go out of your way to drink.
