Pretty good for an NA beer. Might be best in class.

It doesn't taste like a Golden Ale, but it has the LSTF characteristics that at least makes it seems like a beer. However, the aroma was kind of a lightly-staled beer, hence a mark-down. The beer was canned in August, 2021, so it's a little over 5 months old. I'd try this again if fresher.

Looks rather like a Mexican lager. Smells of undercooked grains and kind of floral hops. The hops taste kind of European on the tongue. Ultra-carbonated, which probably helps. I think I would appreciate this more in the warmth of Summer. Regardless, it's a reasonable facsimile of beer, if a bit 'lite'.

Semi clear golden appearance.
Medium carbonation that dissipates a bit after a few minutes. Close to Medium body but overall a decent feel to this.
Aroma is malt, cereal, grain, floral earthy honey.
Taste is mild sweetness with a slight sour grain ,malt, cereal, earthy and floral.
Overall this was an excellent na beer, a vast improvement compared to most na beers that I've tried

Another great offering, and this one's readily available round my parts. It is probably akin to the hefe, which is good, because that posits these guys are running a really good mash, malt bill process. I think if you're a fan of English ale, Euro lager, pale beers, session stuff, throwing some N/A in that mix is really easy to do. This is honestly better than half the oktoberfests I had last year. I reference oktoberfest only because I think this does what I want that to do.

12oz can poured into a snifter

A- pours a clear golden color with a one-finger foamy white head that reduces to a film on top

S- toasted grains, honey, floral hops, earthy tones

T- toasted barley up front gives notes of dried crackers and bread crust. Mid-palate gives light notes of floral and earthy hops. The finish gives more toasted malt, with a hint of hops on a dry linger

M- light body with medium carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel and a crisp dry finish

O- well balanced, extremely drinkable, well done

From a can, pours as a slightly cloudy gold with the thinnest white (quickly dissipating) head. The aroma is a hint of citrusy hops. Taste is a light and floral hops bitterness with a bit of orange zest. This, with the nice carbonation, offers a really refreshing beverage.

Had this on 2021-11-06 near Pittsburgh, PA from a 12oz canned on 2021-09-13

A - Clear straw with a 1/2-finger white head that drops quickly leaving little lace

S - Bran flakes cereal, light lemon and honey

T - Much like the aroma but a little more pear-fruity and some background bitterness on the finish.

M - Light body and medium carbonation. Light and refreshing

O - Good lawnmower beer.

In short, hop water. Clearly there are going to be flavor and texture consequences to a nonalcoholic low calorie beer. It pours a medium golden color with a bit of haze, with a better head than I expected, about a 1/4 inch of white foam. A nice hoppy nose, much more so that a standard golden ale, think more of an IPA. Really the hops are what this is about but they are no where near as strong as most American IPA, but they totally dominate the taste as there is almost no malt flavor. There is close to zero mouth feel. It's crisp, and the carbonation is a good balance, and the hop finish isn't overwhelming, which is impressive given there is nothing else going on here. Radically better than Bud Lite, but for me I'd rather drink less good beer than a lot of something like this.

Poured from 12oz can into a dimpled mug. Canned 8/4/21.

Appearance: light golden hue with a little bit of haze and plenty of effervescence, covered in a thin finger of frothy white foam. The head could be a little more substantial, but still, quite good.

Smell: lightly malty with a big of a green, grassy hop profile; it's not super dissimilar from one of Athletic's IPAs that I've tried, or from a standard session IPA. So, hoppier than I think of a golden ale as being, but nice nonetheless.

Taste: lightly grainy malt flavor with perhaps a bit of a note of unfermented wort. The hops are light and balanced, though, and it does feel like I'm drinking a beer, if a light one. Darn good for NA, though.

Mouthfeel: medium-light with a good level of carbonation and creaminess. I feel like, of the NA beers I have had, Athletic consistently does mouthfeel better than other breweries.

Overall: drinkable and tasty. I could definitely sit on a beach and drink a bunch of these, or a picnic in a park or something. Good stuff for NA!

A: Pours a crystal clear pale yellow in color with moderate to heavy amounts of active visible carbonation rising quickly from the bottom of the glass and moderate amounts of pale golden + bright yellow colored highlights. The beer has a two finger tall sudsy foamy bright white head that quickly reduces to a large patch of slightly mottled thin film covering approximately 95% of the surface of the beer and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Light amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate aromas of grainy + biscuit malts with a light amount of grainy sweetness. Light to moderate aromas of floral + citrus/grapefruit + citrus/grapefruit zest hops.

T: Upfront there are moderate flavors of grainy + biscuit malts with a light amount of grainy sweetness. That is followed by light to moderate flavors of floral + citrus/grapefruit + citrus/grapefruit zest hops which impart a light amount of slightly lingering bitterness.

M: Slightly heavier than light bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Slightly thin/watery in the finish.

O: Easy to drink with a pleasantly refreshing mouthfeel. Enjoyable with a nice hoppy flavor + aroma to a golden ale. Does not have the wortiness present with some of the other NA beers.

Look...Nothing exceptional but i have been impressed with the other Athletic Brews i have had. Golden clear yellow
Smell...very faint hop smell citrus. Rarely impressed by any beers i get at the store that smell exceptional. Local brews seem to kill that factor.
Taste... bitter crisp fresh biting with an astringent finish that is common in the beers i have had from Athletic. A caramel malt in the middle of the beer that is the most desirable part of the taste for me. A real freshness to this beer i like. A nice alternative to drinking the heavy beers.
Feel...Overall this beer is less body compared to their others but still a great quality they have acquired in their brewing. Medium carbonation and very easy to drink
Overall...I think this beer on a hot day is perfect and you could throw back a few easily. A light bodied beer that would work well with food without getting you bogged down. Solid

Canned 2021/06/18
Pours a nice 1.5 finger frothy head with med retention, some soapy lacing, mostly clear light pale color

Nose sweet golden pale malt, a little cereal, fresh wort, fresh lemony citrus and floral hops

Taste brings more cereal grain, light pale golden malt with a faint hint of toast, med bitterness with floral light citrusy hops, getting a touch spicy late but very fresh hop character, dry bitter finish, a touch astringent since there's not much to back up the hops

Mouth is med to lighter bod, med to a bit higher frothy carb, touch of astringency

Overall quite nice, another great NA beer with lots of fresh flavors between the malts and hops, a tad astringent since there's very little malt to support the hops, but for NA beer that's only 50 cals I could drink a lot of this

Poured from a can into a pint glass. Pours straw yellow with a fluffy white head. Smells of sweet grain, not very strong, but pleasant. Tastes of sweet grain, much more complex than the aroma, almost like a real golden ale beer. Beer is light bodied and easy drinking, good carbonation. Overall, a very good NA beer.

I'm crazy about Athletic brewing. This is my third Athletic review. Appearance is golden with soapy head. Aroma is earthy and inviting. Taste of cereal grain, slightly earthy hops. Clean grain finish. Kind of reminds me of a non-alcoholic Saison. Great beer replacement.

I stopped drinking alcohol while training for a marathon in 2019. The only two drinkable NA brews readily available to me at the time were Heinie 0.0 and Labatt Blue NA, both flawed but drinkable. Since then some higher quality NAs have come to the hood. This is a comparison of the Athletic Brewing Upside Dawn and Brooklyn Special Effects. I chose to compare these two since they are not IPAs.

Upside Down is moderately hoppy, acceptably carbonated, and has a very clean taste. It reminds me a lot of it's big brother, Athletic's Run Wild IPA, with the flavor not only dominated by hops, but with almost no apparent malt flavor. It is still very drinkable and tasty, and generally comes across as a light flavored craft brew.

Special Effects calls itself a "Hoppy Brew" and that is accurate. In color it is medium brown, and while it is hoppy, it also shows some distinct malt flavor. How good is the malt flavor? It is very good. It tastes like a reasonably balanced pale ale, and I have definitely had worse pale ales. I can't say definitively that the malt flavor is free of the bad vegetal aftertaste that plagues many NAs, but it is damn close to being free of it. If you are looking for an enjoyable NA brew, you should try it, If you are not an NA drinker but are curious about the state of the art, this is one to try.

I can only imagine that this is Athletic’s NA take on golden ales, or an AAL. Pours true to appearance, with a light aroma. Crisp, and the wort flavor blends well with the beer itself. I found this approachable and enjoyable, and almost prefer this to a ‘regular’ version of this beer.

12oz can served in a snulip. Dated 05/04/2021. Bought it at Total Wine.

Pours a clear light amber or maybe yellow, smallish head. Smell is grain and lemons.

Taste is grain tea with a mild hop bitterness, comes across somewhere between lemon zest and pine sol (sounds bad, doesn't actually taste bad).

Mouthfeel is light, not watery, but moving in that direction. Overall, I haven't had many NA beers, but this isn't bad. I would definitely take this over some regular beers I've had in my life. Of the few NAs I've had, this is definitely either the best or the second best.
