A navy blue 473ml can. Pours out a dark ebony with a nice 2-finger reddish-beige head. Leaves nice sheets of lacing. Looks great.

Aroma is a coffee-forward, with plenty of spicy dry hoppy notes underneath. Chocolate, some lactose, cola and a hint of licorice. Espresso and chocolate predominate, and the aroma is a nice balance between sweet dark fruits and dry, spicy notes. A little vanilla, raisins, some maple syrup and hint of cinnamon. It's not the most complex aroma in the world, but it's appetizing.

It begins quite sweet, all raisins and chocolate milk and licorice. That carries through in the middle, and it ends indeed on the sweet side, with a bit of resinous dryness from the hops creating a nice medium-dry finish. Again, not the most complex range of flavours, but it's all nicely done and nothing is over-the-top or out of place. It's well balanced and hits all the right spots, but with nothing particularly transcendent about it. Full bodied and warming, with little booziness showing up. All in all a very solid Imperial Stout. Nothing to sneeze at.

473ml can - yup, if you wanna break a New Year's resolution involving drinking, this would be the one to do it with!

This beer pours a fairly solid black abyss, with subtle amber basal edges, and three fingers of puffy, rocky, and mildly bubbly brown head, which leaves some layered cirrus cloud pattern lace around the glass as it lazily subsides.

It smells of lightly roasted, bready and doughy caramel malt, bittersweet cocoa powder, faint cafe-au-lait, a hint of anise spiciness, and some plain earthy, musty, and dead floral hops. The taste is gritty and grainy caramel malt, day-old coffee grounds, a bit of indistinct dark berry fruitiness, some free-range wet char, dry black licorice, and more understated leafy, earthy, and musky floral hoppiness.

The carbonation is fairly tame in its palate-disappointing frothiness, the body a decent medium weight, and generally smooth, with just a touch of ashiness maybe making a minor dent in the surface sheen here. It finishes trending dry, the smoky essence starting a lingering hostage situation.

Overall - this is a pleasant enough version of the style, with the smoke and fruit esters contributing dutifully to the cause. They could really have called this a 'Brut' stout (like a local brewery of mine has), but I guess it doesn't matter. Anyways, the 22-proof booze quotient is well-integrated, making for a nice, slow sipper as I stare out at the snow pack.
