27th Anniversary Wheatwine Ale27th Anniversary Wheatwine Ale

Brewed by:
Full Sail Brewery & Tasting Room & Pub
Oregon, United States

Style: Wheatwine

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.50%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
Full Sail’s 27th Anniversary Wheatwine contains no barley malt, instead, it is mashed and brewed with 100% Wheat Malt. The beer has a rich golden hue and is brewed with Wheat and CaraWheat Malts and hopped with a blend of UK and NW hops. Complex aromas of apricot, spice, and citrus lead to a smooth palate, blended with notes of caramel, marmalade, and green hop overtones.

Interesting depth of ratings here, not sure if the last two understood it is a wheat wine and not a barley wine. That said, I’ll side with the earlier reviewers and give this i higher score, Excellent all around characters, from nose, to taste to finish. I concur with JohnGalt1, nice effort.

Please note my review is for a bottle with over 6 months of age. The body and feel of this beer is nice, alcohol is very well
Hidden with a nice soft wheat bread and spice character. Can't help but feel like there is a hop presence that I am missing with this older bottle. I may have gotten to this guy before the hops had full faded but all hop 'pop' is gone and it definitely leaves you wanting something. Wish I had tried this fresher.

Look: Clear ruby red color, poured with almost no head.

Smell: Some citrus, toffee, caramel, sweetness and some dark fruits

Taste: Very similar to smell, a nice bitterness at the end.

Feel: Very smooth mouthfeel, creamy but but smooth.

Picked up a bomber in mid-July from TW Arrowhead for $6.49. No bottling date but i understand this was available September 2014.

Beer poured amber-orange with a nice white head that dissipated quickly.

Nose is citrus and sweet fruity malts.

Taste has orange and tropical hops laid over a nice sweet malt base. Hopping is sufficient to balance the malts.

Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied and smooth.

Overall this beer is a nice surprise, probably the best one i have sampled from Full Sail which in my book has always made quality and mostly unremarkable brews. This is a delicious brew which i may need to track down another bomber!

Appearance: Dark copper-colored body, surmounted by a robust, fairly dense, off-white head. Thick, scattered lacing rings the glass walls. Clarity is better than expected. Streams of fat bubbles drift lazily to the surface.

Aroma: Sweet, vinous alcohol is notable in the aroma, as well as an abundance of dark caramel. Lots of toasted dark bread notes are present as well. Herbal and grassy hops dominate the aroma as well.

Taste: The taste begins with abundant wheat malt, with a definite toasted character. Soon after, spicy, warming alcohol appears. As the taste progresses, grassy and herbal hops assert themselves. Throughout, the wheat malt backbone remains prominent. Finishes with warming alcohol and herbal hops.

Mouth feel: Quite full and soft, very pleasing.

Drinkability/notes: A simply excellent example of the style, possibly not the ideal beer for the Fourth of July, but I find no reason to complain

Presentation: Packaged in a standard twenty-two ounce brown glass bomber with a pry-off crown, served in a New Belgium Brewing chalice.

Sourcing: Purchased at HEB in Texas for $4.29 plus tax for a twenty-two ounce bottle.

I think the hops overwhelm the wheaty sourness most wheat wines have

22oz bottle from Minks (Marietta, GA). 6.98. Bottled 10/2014. Served in a Dogfish Head snifter.

Pours a bright copper orange with about two fingers of dense near-white head. The tightly formed bubbles are slow to shrink down to a small halo and some wisps accross the surface. Only a few scattered dots of lace.

Smells bready and sweet. Wheat, caramel, mild yeast, vague cereal and a little earth. There is just a hint of alcohol lurking in the background but the wheat is certainly the star.

Smooth, sweet wheat kicks off the flavors. Berry skins, bread, caramel, cereal, hay, faint burnt sugar and a soft blanket of booze. For a fairly fresh wheatwine this is quite smooth and well rounded with it's wheaty, grainy sweet goodness.

Semi-creamy, full body with supple carbonation. Wheat, bread, caramel and faint fruit linger in the finish.

Full Sail Brewing has always flown under my radar but they sure know how to celebrate 27 years in business! This is a great basic example of the wheatwine style. I plan to procure several more for enjoyment both now and well into the future.

22 ounce bottle - $7.99 at Total Wine & More in Kennesaw, Georgia.

Appearance: Pours out a lightly hazed, amber-hued body with a

Smell: With a honey-caramel vibe, it's got a sweetish nose to it, plump wheatiness throughout, minor stone fruit, even less citrus peel and a subdued alcohol presence.

Taste: Stirred honey and caramel, sweet malt accents atop the rich bready wheat malt base flavor. A little apricot fruitiness enters, as does a bit of light lemony citrus. Restrained bitterness helps to curb the sweetness. Subtle spiciness to it. Smooth, malty finish with some alcohol warmth detected (though not much, really).

Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium carbonation.

Overall: In this day and age, a wheatwine is a rare treat. You won't get bowled over by its complexities, but, I found it fairly likable, for me, not being too too sweet or too too hot or too too heavy.

look: kind of a hazy honey. Head is a decent sized off white on the pour. Mostly dissipates. Some messy lacing that doesn't stick.
smell: A hint of that buttery thing a Barley can sometime have though a little on the subtle side i suppose in keeping with a Wheat. Some citrus and a bit of spice. Nice nose.
taste: Much like the nose though the flavors aren't as defined. An interesting slightly bitter finish with a bit of a grassy thing happening.
overall: nice brew.
