Full Sail Brewery & Tasting Room & Pub
Oregon, United States

Style: American Amber / Red Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our Amber is a sweet, malty, medium-bodied ale with a spicy, floral hop finish. It's brewed with 2-row Pale, Crystal and Chocolate malts. And we hop it with Mt. Hoods and Cascades. We're as proud of it today as we were back in '89. And over the years it's earned 14 Gold Medals. Not that we're keeping track or anything.

Think I got some bad luck here: Poured with almost no head; at first a few soap bubbles then a very thin read rose. Color is a hazy dark amber. Aroma is malty fruity hops. Flavor metalic malt hop bittersweet. Can tell that it would be a pretty good beer if whatever happened to it hadn't. Body is ok, but flat. Finish is at first sweet then bitter in not such a good way. Dang, was looking forward to this. From the Everything Shop on Canal near the Quarter.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance - Nothing special, amber color as expected, average head.

Smell - Again, nothing special, just some light maltiness.

Taste - Starts malty, but come through overbearingly sweet. Almost undrinkably sweet, in my opinion.

Mouthfeel - Medium body, decent carbonation.

Overall, I really disliked this beer. It looks, smells, and feels like a solid amber ale, but the sweetness just kills it for me.

On tap at the Full Sail Brewery in Hood River, OR. The colour was, well.... amber. Oh, and there was very little head. The aroma was rather uneventful. Suffices to say that I could detect some malt that was rather musty, but that was about it! On the palate, again, nothing exceptionally good, nor remotely good. Rather blah and largely unremarkable!

Not much aroma. Pretty bitter ... Overhopped for my taste. Presents well with a nice amber color and nice head.

[I am copying these notes over from RateBeer ... it does not require as long of review. I tasted this some time ago so I can't add anything.]

Appearance - Brown with a hint of red.

Smell - Not much of an aroma at all. Slight hint of hops in the aroma.

Taste - Kind of like the arome there is not much of a tatse at all. What is there is a very mild, non-descript taste with a hint of hops. Nothing special.

Mouthfeel - Smooth.

Drinkability - Because there is not too much taste this is very drinkable. This could easily be a session beer.

Full Sail Amber pours a dark amber with a fizzy little head.
within moments, it's totally flat.

smell is dominated by husky, sour grains.

taste isn't as offensive as the smell. slightly fruity, with a grainy sourness. a slight floral hop note. lacking in much flavor, and nothing to get excited about.

mouthfeel ok, if a little on the flat side.

drinkability ok i guess. it's a pretty easy to drink beer.

This is the sort of amber ale that gives amber ales a bad name.
It pours a murky caramel color. There’s a slight caramel malt aroma. The flavor is dominated by a caramel-malt profile that veers overly sweet. This beer comes off as cloying and syrupy. Not one I expect to have again.

A-Pours a nice head with light lacing

S-I got prune and a lot of caramel.

T-Lots of malt. I get a twinge of unwanted bitterness; nothing that sticks out more than anything else.

M-Nice mouthfeel with a twinge of unpleasantness on the back

D-Decent but there are other ambers I would drink before this one.

Reviewed 12/1/2005 (bottle):

Pours a body that is a nice dark brown-red in color. Has a good sized head that is off white in color. Aroma is hoppy but mild, not the strongest. Okay flavor that is sweet but balanced, and has a pale aftertaste in the palate.

12 oz bottle poured into a nonic, Full Sail Amber is a dark brownish orange with a medium sized off-white head that leaves moderate lace. Served at fridge temp.

Smell is on the robust side, bread and leafy hops.

Taste is grainy cereals, bread, a little sour, a touch of alcohol and slightly bitter, wet grass finish. I've never been a big fan of the rough assertion of this particular amber...

Mouthfeel is pretty full bodied and a bit slick.

Drinkability is on the lower side, this is one of my least favorite Full Sails, grainy and grassy, and just not something I enjoy or what I look for in an amber.

A-Pours a dark amber hue. Head is tight and leaves bits of lacing. The liquid doesn't display any noticeable sediment, and the head is off-white.

S-A pretty weak nose. Lacking the hops I desire. Grainy. Simple sweetness. Just a disappointment. I love how different the American Amber/ Red Ale can smell and taste, but this one almost refuses to leave any mark on my olfactory system.

T-Moderately bitter and sweet. Some herbal/ tea qualities. Flavor just kinda dies on the palate. Starts and then it falters. Mellow taste. Just is not cutting it.

M-Ample amount of carbonation. Pretty unmemorable beyond the bubbles.

O/D-Not a big fan. I absolutely love Amber/Red ales that are big and bold. This is the opposite. Just bland and boring. Nothing else to say.

A: Deep red color. A small white head forms that leaves a touch of lace down the glass.
S: I do not like the smell of this beer. It is kind of fruity, some hops, some malt. Mostly though, a nasty vegetable aroma is present.
T: The taste is much better. Malt and hops are well balanced with some brown sugar. I can taste the vegetable characteristic that I detected in the nose, but it is much less pronounced.
D: Nothing to complain about here. An easy and quaffable beer.

This seems out of wack. The vegetable aroma and taste really makes this an unenjoyable beer for me.

I'm trying this one for the second time and i'm liking it better than the first time. It still has a metallic taste which brings it down but it doesn't seem as strong as the first time (also the ABV% is 6% now and not 5.5% so maybe they tweaked the recipe too). It kinda tastes like a mix of an IPA and a porter.

Deep red color fills the glass, a bit too dark for an amber, but what do I know. Poured with a big head of medium sized bubbles, but it died quick and left only a medium amount of lace.

Smell is sweet and malty, with some floral hoppiness too. I can guess already that this beer will not be dry enough for my taste. There is no bitterness in the smell which worries me too.

Taste is malty, almost like my homebrew tastes when racking to a second carboy and too much sugar still remains. Hops are underimpressive, though fresh.

Mouthfeel is pretty full but not terribly impressive. No amazing flavors linger. Maybe a bit of roastiness, but even that doesn't last long.

It's drinkable, but why bother. There are better beers to try.

P.S. I think my problem is that i'm used to Mac & Jacks and Fat Tire, both are hoppier and dryer, as I like it.

A: The beer pours copper in color with a large, fluffy, off-white head.

S: Doesn't smell like I was anticipating. Corn and butter with overcooked grains are the initial aromas. Some light floral and grass hops and some fruity esters to the beer. A mild toffee aroma comes through as the beer warms up.

T: Luckily a bit better in terms of the flavor as there is some toffee and toasted bread to it. A hint of bitterness and some grassy hops in the background to detract from the sweetness.

M: Medium in body with a medium to high carbonation.

O: Like a lot of Full Sail beers I've had, this was a let down.

Pours a nice looking medium copper-amber with minimal head. Aroma is slightly sweet malt bread. Flavor is malty, but witha much stronger hop profle than expected. However, it's a little cold, adn as it warms, the malt does become more dominant. Hops are floral but also oily. Balance isn't what I would hope for. Mouthfeel is ok, but the hop profile does not make this one as drinkable as I like. I guess, bottom line, this one just doesn't grab me.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a DFH shaped pint glass.

The beer pours a clear copper color with a large foamy off white head that recedes slowly leaving behind very little lacing.

very mild aroma, lightly malty with hints of caramel and toasted bread. Just a hint of floral hops. Not much going on here

The flavor is slightly bready, with hints of caramel and just a hint of floral hops. Really, quite a mild flavor profile, Light/medium bodied and moderately carbonated. Easy to drink

Overall, this is not a bad beer, but it is not great either.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle, into a pint glass. The beer pours a deep amber, forming a 1/2 inch head, leaving light lacing on the glass. The aroma is very thin. Maybe consisting of light malt sweetness, with a hint of hops. Not too much present. The taste is about the same. Nothing really complex. Sweet malt up front, followed by a light hop finish. Medium mouthfeel. Overall, this just seems like an average beer. Nothing really interesting.

Poured from a bottle into a glass and noticed a nice brown/red (amber) colr with a nice creamy head. The aroma was a little hopps a little malty got something else I couldn't put my finger on. The taste a little bitter but nothing to be alarmed about. This could easily be something that goes down smooth for many. This is not a high abv brew so one could enjoy many of these or not.

A clearish maroon to brown pour with no lasting head. Looked darker than a standard amber, and the smell was mostly a light metal to it at first followed by light malt. Not too impressive on the pour or smell, but the taste was better, however. Good rich sweet maltiness, with very light hop flavor and bitterness to it. Overal, not bad, but not my favorite amber either. Worth a try if you like ambers.

I cant give this beer a good review. I can compare it to beers I enjoy drinking, where it does not stand a chance, or compare it to widely available plain crap, in which case, it is on the upper echelon of not much. The nose is composed entirely of sweet malt, much like the flavor, which consists also of different faint hints thats are undistinguishable. It does at least produce a malty character, but the malt is not intriguing and it certainly leaves you will unfulfilled desire. Not a high recommendation from me certainly. On the other hand, as this is probably thir most available brew, the fact that they could adequately compose at least one flavor bodes fairly well for the brewery.

Pours out a dark amber with scant bubbles. Thin, creamy head with some wisps of lacing. Smells toasty, with fruity esters and some faint citrus hops. Taste is about the same with a good deal of sweetness. Slight medicinal taste. Mouthfeel is pretty smooth with a slight bubbly bite. Weight is moderate. This gets more medicinal as it warms; making it not so drinkable.

Bottle: Poured a deep brown color ale with a nice foamy head with average retention and no lacing. Aroma of caramel malt is about medium with some dry hops also noticeable. Taste is also dominated by some caramel malt as well as some dry hops. Body is above average with some good carbonation. Not bad but nothing extraordinary either.

Appearance: dark amber with a fleeting white head.

Smell: faint malt and hops, not very aromatic.

Taste: benign, not very malty with a floral hop aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: light, slightly watery, decent carbonation.

Drinkability: This amber was decent, it lacked the wow factor for me.

A- Pours a beautiful chestnut-amber color with a 1 finger semi frothy white head. Great looking beer.

S- Caramel, cooked veggies, slight bitterness, spicy grainy smell. Smell stings the nostrils kind of. Slight metallic smell also like a euro macro. Not the best smelling beer ever.

T- caramel malt, toasted Hawaiian bread, light hop presence. Pretty sessionable beer. Glad the wierd smell didn't carry over to the taste.

M- A bit thin and over-carbonated

O- A good beer to have if your at a BBQ or something. A good session beer but far from a top tier amber.
