Full Sail Brewery & Tasting Room & Pub
Oregon, United States

Style: American Pale Ale (APA)

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.40%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Not to be confused with their English Style Pale.

"Our Pale Ale has a fresh, hoppy aroma that comes from two (top secret) Northwest hop varieties, while two-row Pale and Crystal malt give it a mild sweetness that finishes clean and crisp. Feeling out of whack? Put on some music, crack a Pale Ale, and readjust your balance.

Poured into a pint glass. Reviewed alongside Smuttynose Shoals Pale Ale.

A: Clear medium amber with lots of tiny bubbles and a two-finger, white, foamy head that lasted a couple of minutes. Pretty good lacing.

S: Sweet bready malt and citrus hops. Fruit aromas.

T: Light sweetness and light hop bitterness. Very toasted and caramel-like flavor. Citrus and spice as well. Toasty finish.

M: Light to medium bodied with fizzy carbonation. Pretty smooth. Not bad.

O: The flavor was pretty balanced. Not the smoothest or best looking beer though. I like this one only slightly better than the Smuttynose.

From a 12 oz bottle marked “Enjoy by 060607,” consumed in early August 2007. Probably not at its prime. Into my Sam Adam’s glass (thanks, guys!), this one’s a clear coppery-golden color with a small amount of carbonation. Thick whitish cap fades slowly to a thin, clumpy cap and ring, along with great, sticky lace. Nose of pale, floral hops and a bit of sweet malt. Tastes of middle-bitter floral/piney hops, some semi-sweet malt in the back, a bit nutty, finishing a rather dry hoppy bitter. Mouth is full and well-carbonated, yet wet and thirst-quenching. Drinkability is solid; I can easily see me drinking a few of these.

Overall: A competent American Pale, probably better if consumed within freshness date. Worth a try.

Appearance is a light red amber with white foam and lace that lasts. Aroma is apricot hops, fragrant with notes of roasted malt. Initial taste greets your palate with a silky yet bitter experience with plenty of hops and malt nicely balanced with floral and barley. Finish leaves a lingering caress of lovely hops that makes you want more.

Gorgeous deep clear gold, with just the slightest blush of copper. Fine off-white 1/2" head settles to a thin full cap.

Nose is a lovely mix of citric and earthy/musty hop over slightly sweet crackery malt. Very complex and balanced.

Medium weight in the mouth. The balance tilts a bit towards malt initially, but the hops come to dominate - a bit too much so for my palate. There is a nice chalkiness from the mid-palate on, and a long mouth-watering finish.

The carbonation level is quite low which gives the beer a real thirst-quenching property, but more carb might have helped balance the beer more. Overall, its still a very nice brew, and one I'd like to sample on cask.

Many thanks to MJR for bringing this souvenir of his vacation to St. Louis for me!
