Revisited 12-06-2017

Deep mahogany body; thick, creamy, sticky head. Malty aroma; touches of molasses and brown sugar. Roasted grain flavors; somewhat nutty; a bit of cocoa sweetness; a hint of hop bitterness. Full bodied.

A few bumps up in a couple of categories from my review from 2012. Still pretty good, all things considered.

Original ratings: 3.5 3.5 3.5 3.5 3.5

Appearance: solid amber; thick white head that leaves plenty of foamy rings down the glass

Smell: toasty malts; earthy and sweet

Taste: malt, malt, malt; and then a pleasant bitterness; alcohol warmth is definitely there but is on par with the style

Mouthfeel: medium body, some chewy sweetness overall

Overall: a better than average winter warmer, going for the strong malt profile; no strong herbal or spice notes; fair bitterness to top things off.

This is the 2011 version at 6.5% ABV

This is a nice winter warmer. It has a nice hopiness to it but also has a creamy taste to it like a stout. In the smell I get spices and hops maybe some caramel. The taste is really nice and I really get some nice breadiness and then a nice smooth hop aftertaste. Overall this is one I would drink every winter and I will look for it in the future.

Poured into a pint glass.

A: Clear dark red-brown color with two-finger, off-white, creamy head that lasted a few minutes. Pretty good lacing.

S: Caramel malt. Earthy hops.

T: Light sweetness and solid hop bitterness. Earthy, spicy, bitter hops. Lightly toasted malt but no caramel.

M: Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Smooth and creamy. Slightly warm.

O: Overall, this beer looks and feels great, but the hops were a bit too much for me given the style. Not bad though.

Bottle poured into a tulip

A: Pours a dark amber, caramel hue with almost a finger of tan head and large bubbles.

S: The aroma is amazing; lightly spicy with nutmeg and white pepper mixed with watermelon, peach and cantaloupe fruits, not quite Belgian but extremely inviting all the same.

T/M: A medium to high level of carbonation attacks the tongue at first but mellows quickly giving way to sweet, bready malts, subtle bright fruits and a soft bitter finish, like a more potent amber.

I don't always drink winter ales, but when I do, it will probably be this one.

After Christmas, nothing better than making a beer run and picking up a new one. Full Sail Wassail, not going to lie but I grabbed this one on looks alone

Appearance - A beautiful mahogany brown that makes a wonderous sight

Smell - A fresh and snappy scent. Hoppy and flavorful

Taste - If you like hops, this is your beer! Tastes like it is fresh off the barley.

Mouthfeel - full and delicious. Carbonation is good but wears a little quickly.

Overall - 4/5 on all counts. Delicious but if your not in the mood for a hoppy beer, this is not your drink.

Bottle poured into a 22oz Pilsner glass. Thanks for this one, Steve.

Live review.

A: Pours a deep red/mahogany color, almost brown, 2 finger tan head settles after 5 minutes into a full cap, sticky small bubble lacing everywhere, and it refuses to let go of the glass. Very, very impressive so far.

S: Not a ton here, caramel and toffee sweetness, a little bit of a spicy, earthy hop, some light toast notes as well. Kind of bland, to be honest.

T: Hoppy like a rabbit! Hop bitterness is very pronounced, citric, piney, herbal, earthy, and very sharp. The sweetness that existed heavily in the aroma is masked by these overwhelming hops. Slight toast and caramel notes come toward the finish before getting buried beneath a nasty alcohol burn and another wave of bitterness. Finishes long and bitter. Meh. Better than the aroma, I guess.

M: Thin, slick, oily. Decently carbed. Again, meh.

O: Meh. This beer is a Winter Warmer alright. The bitterness and the burn from the alcohol could keep anyone warm. This is more a hoppy red ale than a winter warmer, IMO. Heavy handed, in all honesty. Would I buy more? No. Would I drink it again? Probably not. Just overpowering, and I'm a hophead.

I thought Full Sail was supposed to be good. This is meh.

Grabbed a single at Princeton's Liquors. The aroma is a bit sharp with alcohol, but there's also a pleasant mix of banana and date, and brown, bready malt. I really like the roasty edge to the flavor. It blends in with the dark fruit and crusty cocoa barley flavor for a wonderfully-balanced American take on the style. I had a Deschutes Jubelale the night before and prefer this winter warmer, despite the lower hoping rate. Great beer.

Best by 5/7/12.

Pours a clear super dark crimson brown with a 1 inch puffy khaki head that settles to a thin film. Foamy rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of toasty malt and some caramel aromas. Taste is of toasty malt, caramel, and some dry spice flavors. There is a medium amount of spice bitterness that lingers on the palate after each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a somewhat smooth mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good Winter warmer but nothing all that great. I am not really a fan of the spice bitterness that this beer leaves in the mouth.

12oz bottle x2. Best by 04/03/12. Served in a tapered 22oz glass.

Pours a clear dark brown with ruby red highlights. A finger + of beige foam forms and settles at a moderate pace. A good amount of lacing clings to the glass.

Aroma is of bready and dark malt, along with some caramel sweetness. Hints of vanilla, and dry spices. Medium hop presence.

Initial flavor is mildly sweet followed quickly by a almost cherry like tang. Fairly bitter floral hops finish things up. Hops come out in the flavor more than the nose.

Medium bodied with medium but sharp carbonation.
