Thanks to Wasatch for this brew...
"Brewmaster Reserve 2007":

Pours slightly hazed golden amber with an off-white creamy head.

The smell is of citrus, pine and some floral notes. Caramelish, grainy background.

The taste is citric and piney. Bitter, though some mild sweetness rounds it out. Some chalkiness is there in the bitter finish.

A nice IPA that I would look forward to having again if it were available in my area!

Thanks again, John!

Pours a very cloudy orange colored body, with a huge foamy creamy yellowish color head. Lasting & frothy. Hoppy piney aroma, a slight chemical smell. Not too strong. Piney slight bitter taste. Dry. Warming up - less dry, good.

A: Pale gold with abundant carbonation and very slight haze. MASSIVE foamy white head - far more than could be intentional or appropriate. Even after letting it settle down my glass is 2/3 clumpy white lace.

S: Citrusy American hops with just a hint of alcohol, straightforward but pleasant.

T: More citrus and some piney/earthy hops as well; the malt is totally overwhelmed but as a showcase for the hops I'm not sure that's a bad thing. Flavors linger on the front of the palate, but the bitterness in the aftertaste is huge on the roof of the mouth and in the throat.

M: Dry and maybe just a bit overcarbonated, even after losing all that CO2 to the head, but it sure does highlight all those hops.

D: Phenomenal. I bought this one on a trip out West and the thought that it might be months or years before I can have another almost brings tears to my eyes.

This is one bad-ass mother. I may have a new favorite IPA, and as a certified lupulin addict that's saying something.

Appearance: Pours a clear, orangish body with a thin ring of white bubbles.

Smell: Musky, citrusy aroma with some caramel and pale maltiness lurking in the background.

Taste: Slight pale and caramel maltiness with a mild sweetness. Leafy, pithy grapefruit hop flavor with a moderate bitterness and a bearable amount of acidity. Finishes as dry as one would expect.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Brisk carbonation.

Drinkability: Sometimes I feel absurb asking a West-coast IPA for a bit more malt, but I'll ask it anyway.

I got this bottle in a trade with Wasatch. Thanks John!

This pours from 22oz bottle a clear medium gold with a nice 2 finger head of foam. The foam recedes slowly but is still a solid layer deep into the session and it has a nice display of lacing.

The smell is very hoppy but I'm also getting a whiff of sweetness along with the hops.

The taste is very bitter. Pucker City! No sign of the sweetness I noted in the smell at all but the hoppy goodness does tickle my palate nicely. I'm noting a lot of grapefruit and some floral...and boy, that makes for a heck of a bitter IPA. It has a medium mouthfeel to it and the carbonation is fairly high. It finishes with a nice grapefruit zest and the aftertaste lingers on for quite some time.

I usually prefer an IPA to be more balanced but when I'm in a hop head mood, this one fits the bill.

Thanks again, John!

This pours into my glass as a clear, amber color. There is about 1/8 inch of off-white head that doesn't stick around at all. The smell is of ripe grapefruit and heavy, floral hops. There is a tinge of alcohol lingering in the background with bits of caramel and honey balancing it all out. A strong pine scent going on as well.

The taste starts out pretty bitter with strong hops bite. This slides into citrus flavors such as grapefruit and orange zest. After that come caramel and honey, malty sweetness with a bit of pine blending in and one last kick of hops in the finish.

Very dry, very crisp and medium bodied, tiny bit of carbonation stays behind. This beer is juicy and refreshing, going down easily, but lacking anything extraordinary to pull me back into it.

Acquired via trade from Wasatch, so a big "Thank you" goes out to him. Poured from a 22oz. bottle into a mug glass.

A: The beer is a bright orange/amber color, with a large off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is a good combination of citrus, caramelized malt and floral hops.

T: The taste is very well-balanced with flavors of grassy hops and citrus & caramel sweetness that compliment each other nicely. The malt character seems to be a little on the thin side for the style but it works for this beer. The after-taste is likewise slightly hoppy and slightly sweet.

M: Smooth and very crisp, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is clean and dry.

D: Tasty, goes down very easily, not filling at all, decent kick, very good representation of style, I found this to be a very enjoyable IPA and it seems like one that I could drink 2 or 3 bombers of in an evening.

Picked up a bomber at BevMo in early August for $3.99.

Beer poured a golden orange with a frothy off white head that is tenaciously hanging on. Nose is malty, with citrus rind playing in the background. Taste starts somewhat malty but tilts heavily to a big citrus rind finish that lingers long after. Mouthfeel is medium bodied and lively on the palate from a decent amount of carbonation. Overall drinkability is good. This is a nice representation of the West Coast ipa style.

D - A nice hop dominant IPA.

I've been looking for this one for a while and finally found it at Blue Max liquors in Burnsville, MN.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into a standard pint glass.

Beautfiul golden-orange color w/ lively carbonation and a nice head. The head dwindles to a nice lacing, but is always there. Unfortunately, the aroma is not quite there. It may because this is a summer beer and I'm buying it in December. I even let it warm up a bit and the aroma still didn't come out. What I do get is some nice citrus tones, backed up by a fruity sweetness. I just wish I could get more of it.

Right off there is a nice hit of hops. Very citrusy w/ notes of grapefruit and even orange. There is also a pleasant sweetness following this with evidence of the malts and maybe even some esters. It reminds me a bit of orange juice, but in a good way. It finishes w/ a mild bitterness. Overall not overly hoppy, but pretty good for an IPA.

The mouthfeel is nice and solid for an IPA. Starts off crisp, then smooths out and finishes off clean w/ only a little bitterness in the back of the throat.

Overall this is a solid IPA. I really like the appearance and the citrusy flavors. I do feel like it is missing some hop presence, but as mentioned above, the freshness of my bottle may be a factor in this. Even as is, I would drink a few more of these no problem. I will definitely look for this again next summer.

Big thanks to Wasatch for this 1.

A- Slighty hazy orange/ copper with a big frothy head.
S- Sour/ bitter grapefruit/ orange rind,
T- Bitter grapefruit, tangerine and other citric rinds. A sugary sweet vanilla caramel malt base with a tangy grapefruit finish.
M- Sweet yet bitter up front with a big malty middle and a tangy finish.

Overall- Nice big Citrus balanced evenly with a creamy malt make this a delicious beer. Damn you West Coast only if this were easier to find around here.

On tap at Elk Public House, served in a pint glass.

Pours a deep copper/bronze color and is slightly hazy. An average somewhat creamy head forms, and has good staying power.

Smell is a nice citrus aroma. Lemon and grape fruit. Not much of the pine scent present in many IPAs.

Taste is malty rather than fruity and puckering as the smell suggests.

Mouth feel is crisp and clean, with a mildly bitter aftertaste.

A remarkably drinkable IPA. Nice flavor, not over the top on bitterness, and a good thirst quencher. I wish I had it in the summertime.

750ml poured into a Duvel tulip glass
A- Pours an opaque orange honey hue, head is white fluffy foam that is mostly dissipating, minimal lacing
S- Nose is quite hoppy with a subtle citrus (mostly orange) character, big tones of tea take over midway, some floral, herb, and spices, as well as bready malts
T- Initial taste is mildly bitter hops which give way to tones of tea and biscuit malts, some chalk, grass, and earth characteristics
M- Light-bodied ale, watery texture, sharp carbonation
D- Easy-to-drink IPA at 6%abv that is fairly light on the hops and is surprisingly tea-like, I kept getting the essence of a hoppy iced tea, while this is unique it doesn't hold up to most other IPAs in terms of the style characteristics, this is definitely non-offensive but in a bad way
Buy Again? Probably Not

Pours a sediment clouded burned orange with white head that dies instantly. Smells of your typical citrus, grapefruity hops and rind. Hoppy on the taste with minimal malt balance and a rindy bitter finish. None of the taste is prominant. Feels light in the mouth with crisp carbonation. Very drinkable. Overall its a good but so many standouts in this category leaves this one in the dust.

22 oz bomber from Wasatch. Pours a copper, amber color with a tight, small bubbled foam head that doesn't quite stay long enough to really be fully enjoyed and doesn't leave any lace to speak of. A bit disappointing. The second pour yields some weird sediment that kind of sits at the bottom. Unappetizing, even for someone who thrives on bottle conditioned yeast hazy goodness.

The smell is piney citrusy american hops without much malt. The taste is pretty similar. Nothing that really stands out here--pretty unbalanced to boot. I wouldn't avoid this beer by any means, but in a crowded field of craft American IPAs, this really doesn't rise above. Don't get me wrong, though--I finished the whole bomber even after eating a large dinner. Its good, but not great.

Pours with a fairly hazy, amber tinged, dark copper color. It is topped by a frothy, initially fat-two-finger thick, tan colored head. The aroma is certainly hop focused with resinous notes of pine, lots of herbal notes and a substantial citrus character. The citrus notes remind me of grapefruit, tangerines, some notes of lychee and even some freshly zested orange zest full of citrus oils. As my nose gets used to the aromatics the resinous side of the hops starts to become the secondary aromatic note to the citrus, whereas in the beginning it was the opposite. Hints of caramelized malt character peeks through the hop aromatics and becomes a bit more noticeable as a malty, soda cracker like, almost dusty grain note if you really dig around towards the end. I like that the aroma is a nice mix of citrus, resinous notes with even a touch of malt character; it makes for an interesting olfactory experience.

Quite well carbonated, the beer really froths up as it hits my tongue. The beer is really dry as well, this really downplays any noticeable citrus notes and instead the hop flavors focus on resinous notes of pine, herbs and even a menthol like note. The hops really linger on in the finish, without some perceived malt sweetness to coat the tongue and round out the flavors, the hops contribute to an astringent, mouth coating, raw, green bitterness. This bitterness is fairly aggressive, though not overwhelming. A touch of citrus character is noticeable as grapefruit, but it is really overwhelmed by the resinous hop character. The resinous character does lean a bit towards citrus oil though, but more on the aggressive side of things.

Despite that an IPA should be about dominant hop character, a good one really does need a fair amount of supporting malt to accentuate & balance the aggressive hop levels. This certainly has the hop character, but is missing that crucial malt sweetness that would make this far more enjoyable. As is, it is a nice enough beer, but it is just a little too unbalanced for me.
