A little different label on this one with a plaid gold, white and black pattern and ABV of 9.5%. Purchased at Tipsy's in Littleton, CO over Christmas '16. Pretty good bourbon barrel stout. Smell is heavy on the bourbon up front. Feels a little light for the style, could be a little thicker. Taste up front is bourbon, with a little molasses and chocolate maltiness. Pretty good. Just hope I'm reviewing the right one. Cheers and Happy New Year.

On tap at Albertsons. Pours out inky black with a huge fluffy beige head, instant barrel/wood aroma, hints of chocolate and rum. Taste is incredibly smooth, no hint of the high ABV. Warmth comes on much later in the game. Incredible RIS, barrel aging is a huge plus.

Pours an opaque dark brown almost black like oil with khaki colored head. Bourbon, woody oak, some sweet vanilla and chocolate on the nose; follows onto the palate. Full bodied. Finishes with bourbon and sweetness.

2013 22oz bottles poured into snifter.

A: Pours opaque deep, dark brown with a half finger of tan head. Head dissipates quickly but leaves behind considerable, lasting lacing.

S: First whiff is 100% bourbon booziness. Second whiff soaks in chocolate fudge, vanilla and oak along with some malt sweetness.

T: Taste is much more subdued than the aroma, presumably due to the age. First hit is chocolate covered ark figs, leather, oak, vanilla. Nearly zero roast or bitterness. Second taste is same as first but finishes with a bit of a tangy, fruitiness.

M: Overall the feel , considering age, is medium. Lower carbonation which is appropriate for the style. Texture is slick yet slightly creamy.

O: More than impressed with the brew considering the BA rating below a 4 overall. I would like to try this one fresh as comparison.

The beer pours very little lightly tan head that disipates very quickly. The beer itself is an opaque black. The texture doesn't seem to be very appealing and a bit muddy.

The beer smell is pretty strong in the barrel notes. The beer has a very strong vanilla note and a very present bourbon note to it. The beer seems to have some of the other notes such as chocolate and a light, bitter hop note but they seem to be overwhelmed.

The taste is pretty good and better than the smell with a bit more complexity. In addition to the vanilla and alcohol, the beer also has a whiskey note to it as well.

The mouthfeel is heavy but seems to be lacking thickness (probably due to the aging). The carbonation is biting and not bad but the beer just feels too light for the style.

Overall, this is a decent imperial stout but you're not missing anything. The beer isn't that complex and seems to have been overwhelmed by the aging.
