Tasted on-tap 06/04/07 at the Full Sail Riverfront Brewpub in Portland, OR.

Solid black in color with a nice brown head and good lace. A very robust interpretation of an Oatmeal Stout with lots of roasted malt, chocolate, and coffee on the nose and mouth. Medium-full bodied and smooth with a big dry roasty finish.

A Top notch OS !

Had this on tap at the Riverplace tap room in Portland.

The beer pours an impressive black color with very good head retention and great lacing. This beer looks quite impressive. On the nose one gets predominantly coffee, but with some underlying licorise, chocolate and vanilla. The beer smells every bit as good as it looks. For the most part, the flavor on the palate replicates the nose. One gets mostly coffee, but there's some vanilla and hoppy bitterness in the finish as well. The beer is not at all heavy and is really quite easy to drink. It has almost a creamy consistency that is quite attractive.

This is a very good beer from the folks at Full Sail.

I had a chance to try this awhile back at the Riverplace location.
A - A black as night body w/ a full tan head.

S - The smell of deep malts, oats and a fruity ale scent.

M - Med to full body w/ a light bitter feel in the finish.

T - A deep roasted flavor w/ bold extra hoppy taste. The hops are piney and go well w/ all the roastiness and oat full feel. The depth is pleasant and the hop taste combines w oats adding to the flavor up to the pleasant finish w/ hoppy bitterness.

D - A very good oatmeal stout in the NW tradition. Very tasty w/ smoothness of oats and dark malt profile.

Draught served in a shaker at the Pilsner Room, Humma Gumma is a black with a small khaki skim that left lots of creamy sheets of foam lace.

Smell is coco, from dusty to rich syrup as it warms, with a hint of cinnamon.

Taste is rich and roasty but very smooth and rounded, espresso and chocolate, with a dry finish and slight hint of alcohol.

Mouthfeel is velvety, luscious and creamy, with a body on the lighter side.

Drinkability is rather high, as this is so smooth and balanced, just a fantastic stout.

Served almost too warm – a comment you’ll rarely hear from me in reference to a cask-conditioned ale. I asked the bartender what the playful name meant but he was unable to track that down.

Humma Gumma emits a luscious chocolate fragrance. Ah… that was nice. It didn’t last long, but the good things in life are often like that. The pour showed ticklish, feathery suds of dark sandy color. This was notably well sustained, even for an oatmeal stout, but especially so without the benefit of expeller CO2. The mouthfeel is so plush and satiny, it’s almost a guilty pleasure.

Humma Gumma is not abundantly flavorful, at least in cask form. This is especially so after the aroma departs. It has a lingering smoky finish but is relatively modest in its disposition.
