Part of EBF Cyberspace 2021

Round 4 is throwing me for a loop. First off, this is my first beer from Brazil. The blend of cultures here is what really has me confused. It’s a Russian imperial stout from a Brazilian brewery that utilizes a Japanese ingredient. I love the idea of this, I can’t wait to jump in

Pours completely pitch black with a finger of tan head that fades to a ring and leaves decent lacing

The nose is interesting, I’m picking up on notes of sea salt, roasted malt, dark chocolate, coffee, and a touch of caramel

Yeah, that miso definitely comes through in. The front end brings notes of roasty coffee, a touch of chocolate, and some salt. The swallow brings notes of smoke, sea salt, roasted malt, and some dark chocolate

A medium full body pairs with moderate carbonation for a very dry and umami drinking experience. Finishes wonderfully dry with a nice roast

Really good, super unique. Though it did remind me a bit of an oyster stout

This was one of my last beers from the fun Extreme Beer Festival. Poured a very dark brown color with with a beautiful creamy beige head and excellent curtain lacing. Nice initial smell and taste of miso, pleasant and not overpowering. Dark chocolate flavors take control with some dark roast coffee. Probably the best looking of the EBF beers, enjoying this.

Very, very nice! Smooth as heavy silk and tasty to boot .... this isn't my usual style, but it's cold outside and I'm pretty sure i've never had a better imperial stout.

It’s more imperial Russian than imperial Japanese, but it’s a fine brew. A bit strong, but fine. Not sure if an additional sake type sting would have helped, but it’s still a fine brew.

Black Miso from Japas Cervejaria. Received on 20/1/21 for the Extreme Beer Fest – Cyberspace (2021) from Half-Time, Poughkeepsie, NY. $ 109.99 (Including tax and shipping). This is a 16 oz can ($ 0.702/oz). Stored at home at 42 degrees. Reviewed 10/2/21. (Note: I use DD/MM/YY protocol.)
Undated can. Served at 57 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. Final temperature 61.5 degrees.
Appearance – 4.25.
First pour – Amber Brown (SRM 18), clear.
Body – Black (SRM 40), opaque. When rear-lite, still opaque.
Head – Large (Maximum five cm, aggressive center pour), fawn, high density, short retention, diminishing to a 10 to 21 mm crown with a jagged edge, and a heaped partial cap. Chunks of lacing remain as the head retracts. Second pour produces tight 0.5 cm head.
Lacing – Excellent! Narrow rows of tiny to small bubbles connected by short columns, with short stalactites, slowly evolving into finely torn curtain lacing.
Aroma – 4.25 – Heavy roasted malt and much lighter miso, no hops, no yeast.
Flavor – 4.25 – Begins with heavy roasted malt. No hops, no malt, no yeast. Miso is barely noticeable on the taste. Slightly bitter. No alcohol (11.5 % ABV, as marked on the container) flavor or aroma, but a transitory alcohol burn appears then dies after each swallow.
Palate – 3.5 – Medium, approaching creamy, soft carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 3.75 (After deducting 0.25 point for undated container) Basic RIS with touch of miso – interesting.

16oz can served in a sample glass as part of Extreme Beer Fest.

Pours black, small creamy head, little carbonation. Smell is spicy. Maybe meaty or soy sauce. Anise, maybe coffee. Perhaps hallucinating, but maybe Worcestershire sauce and a little grass.

Taste is full on Russian Imperial Stout, tons of anise and coffee, slightly salty, maybe a little meaty and soy saucy. Roast bitterness is there, some whispers of sweetness and/or vanilla.

Mouthfeel is thick but effervescent. Overall, very interesting and very good.

Pours black with light cocoa head. Pumpernickel toast, baker's chocolate, mushrooms and anise on the nose, with vinous accents. Earthy umami from the miso and more tannic flavors with grains roasted within an inch of their lives. Very dry, some light iodine. Distinctive, I dig it.

Sampling a 16 oz can poured into my snifter at cellar temp. Part of EBF 2021.
The beer pours a rich dark cola brown color with almost no light passing through when holding glass to the light. I get a dense and creamy head of 1 cm that fades to a thin edge layer that sticks around for the entire sampling.
Aroma is a deep roasted malt, almost charred wood and a very dark chocolate note as well. I also get some anice and maybe some earthy soil notes, or perhaps my mind is telling me I should smell that note.
First sip reveals a medium bodied beer with very fine and gentle rolling carbonation. Texture is very smooth and the beer is probably too easy to drink.
Flavor is roasted malt, basically charred wood coming through with hints of bakers chocolate. this is not a sweet beer.
I get deep roast, but also a bit of an earthy profile towards the finish. Is this where the miso comes in? The beer is super charred and roasted malt up front, the balance of the miso isnt apparent until the beer starts to warm, and then I get some earthy and vegetal notes. Still very proliific beer.

Did not expect this one to be nearly as good as it was. Overall kind of a light stout in terms of roast character, but that is what let the miso really shine. Strong, roasty umami flavors and a subtle sweetness made this a very unique and delicious beer. Would be my pick for best in show at the '21 extreme beer fest.

Miso comes thorough in the smell and ever so slightly in the taste. Pretty good for an imperial stout. Nice job on this one.

DATE: April 17, 2021... OCCASION: enjoying a family TV night with a beer I have been waiting for the right night to crack open....unfamiliar wit miso as a soup, this should be interesting! GLASSWARE: Citrabellum pokal tulip... pours a lively jet-black body whose dividing line between it and its light tan, thickened head constantly shifts it bubbling demarcation... a pleasant, airy aroma begins with cocoa, light roasted coffee, fragrant flowers, and a candied, bubble gum-like suggestion that makes this a bit different from an imperial stout's usual trademark... nice, thickening rings as the glass drains... each sip is a grainy, textured draw with activity at the teeth, a bit of warmth in the mouth, and a lingering presence at the throat--but all of this belies its eleven-plus heft... it also has a smooth, frothy consistency that approximates a latte--a comfort drink, for sure... soft cocoa, roasted coffee, vanilla, and a lactic appreciation that makes this a dessert-like experience... this one came courtesy of BA's Extreme Beer Fest, and what a treat--a Japanese flavor from a Brazilian brewer is just another example of a healthy beer culture...

EBF Cyberspace beer.
Deep dark brown, opaque with a fluffy mocha colored head that rises 2 fingers high of loses bubbles and slowly settles to a scattered film. Slight scattered layers of lacing.
Nose is a solid Russian imperial stout minus all of the popular sweet additions. Roast, earthy, and very approachable. A mild hint of umami peeks in where there might have been some peat.
Flavor is, again, very much a traditional RIS, but the smooth, delicate umami and most nuanced saltiness comes in. This is a very unique take on the style.
I've had thicker RIS's but still solid enough. Mild carbonation.
Overall, I m blown away by the use of miso in this RIS. So subtle, so pleasing. You ladies killed it with this one. Obrigado.
