Russian Imperial Stout with Persimmon.

Black Daruma is a powerful RIS, liquorice, with notes of bitter chocolate and a touch of Japanese Persimmon, a fruit that brings luck and longevity in the eastern tradition. Daruma is a Japanese amulet inspired by the Buddhist monk Bodhidharma, and in black it means fortune and prosperity. When making a wish you must paint one of your eyes, so when it comes true, you can say thank you by painting the other eye.

L - More of a dark brown ale, WITH some characteristics of Stout, not much head or lacing as it went down.
S - Things got a LOT more interesting on the news as those first hints of dark, bitter chocolate, hit the nose. A bit of oak impression, dark cherries, and then...
T - Even more impressive is the overall roundness, sophistication of how this hits the palate - like a graceful thinner version of Wookey Jack with charred persimmon notes all the way down. Wow this works for me. Impressed.
F - Great mouthfeel - for those thinking it's thin, I'm OK with that, as it also doesn't come across as too heavy, cloying, or creamy. Love it, and the ABV is well hidden until it SMACKS.
O - This one is so far one of my faves from the box, an unexpected joy, and one I didn't see coming. Nice that it's three women brewers. A bit confusing if it's brewed in Chicago or not, but I really liked this stout. Completely different.

16oz can

Pours a finger of sturdy brown head into my snifter. Retention is very nice and after five minutes there is still a solid layer of head. Lacing is decent. Body is completely back, no light getting through whatsoever. Looks pretty nice.

Nose is chocolatey and roasty. Smells very clean for 11%, hopefully well-attenuated. Simple, but everything you want out of a stout, with no present alcohol.

Flavor hits much bigger than the nose, but the chocolate and roast hold true as the backbone. It’s a nice flavor but it’s a little too rich for me at times.

Carbonation is very light. Body drinks light at first but finishes very thick. Not extremely sweet, but it is sticky in the finish. Bitterness isn’t super high but it becomes more present as the beer warms. Definitely an alcohol presence. Overall the mouthfeel is alright, pretty on par for a beer this big.

Drinkability is ok all things considered.

The flavor is simple but good. Mouthfeel is pretty rough around the edges, and while that’s to be expected for the style, it’s still hard to get through an entire pint. Overall good.

Poured stout black and sported a beige, 3 cm head that dissipated slowly and left decent lacing.
Aroma was lost on my Covid affected nose.
The taste was good: I got the standard imperial stout roasted malts in the form of toast and dark chocolate, touch of coffee and the normal dark fruit (figs, raisins, plums) had company- an almost tart cherry flavor that was subtle but definitely there. I can only guess that was the persimmon.
The feel was a little thinner than I generally expect for imperial stouts, which makes the 11% ABV just a little too quaffable.
OA, tasty stout, I may even buy another one if I can, just to verify what I tasted.

Dark brew with beige foam in the Bellegems Bruin glass. Inviting aroma of roasted grain, cocoa, and a hint of licorice. Rather sweet and a substantial body but not at all syrupy. The fruit flavor seems to grow as the beer warms up a little. rich dark malty taste with some burnt sugar and bitter chocolate. Somewhat bitter and a caramel finish. Finally a flavoring for the big stouts that I actually like. This is a better than average Imperial Stout and a pleasure to sip. From the 16 oz can included in the BA box of stouts.

A: Pours a clear but opaque extremely dark cola brown approaching jet black in color with moderate amounts of fine active visible carbonation rising along the edges of the glass and faint dark garnet red + dark chestnut brown. + dark amber + dark ruby red colored highlights. The beer has a two finger tall foamy dark tan head that slowly reduces to large patch of thin film covering approximately 85% of the surface of the beer and a medium thick ring at the edges of the glass. Light to moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate to strong aromas of roasted + slightly charred + toasted + bready + caramel malts with light amounts of caramel sweetness. Light aromas of licorice/anise + cocoa. Hints of earthy hops. Light to moderate aromas of persimmon.

T: Upfront there are moderate to strong aromas of roasted + slightly charred + toasted + bready + caramel malts with light amounts of caramel sweetness. That is followed by light to moderate flavors of persimmon. Then there are light flavors of licorice/anise + cocoa. Finally there are hints of earthy hops. Light to moderate amounts of lingering roasty bitterness.

M: Slightly heavier than medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Moderate amounts of dryness in the finish.

O: Drinks pretty easily considering the strength and the alcohol is well hidden with a dry mouthfeel. Enjoyable old school RIS and the addition of persimmon is quite interesting.

16oz can from the Extreme Stout Box
Vessel: Bissell Brothers tulip glass
First beer from a Brazilian brewery, I believe..

P- black with a 1f tan head
N- softer than anticipated; cocoa and aromatics from the persimmon; gets a bit bolder as it warms
T- roast pairs up up with cocoa throughout; punctuated with persimmon notes; cohesive, unique, and pretty darn tasty
MF- medium-bodied with medium to medium-high carb; supports the profile well
O- a well-done imperial stout; enjoyed the incorporation of the persimmon; would have again

Not as thick as other imperials. Decent head initially that dissipates quickly, slightly sweet on the nose. Moderate carbonation, roasty, hint of persimmon. Solid!

Pours black brown with a full khaki head. Final 3/4 a finger lingering quite a bit, but gradually fading into a ring. Interesting smell. It's got a little something weird, which is the persimmon. Otherwise, it is rather malty. Taste is malty, cocoa, deep and smooth with a top layer of bitterness that lingers on in the back of your mouth. It's a pleasant drink. The persimmon is weird. Of course it is, as an unusual ingredient. Having bought persimmon recently to try before this, I certainly taste it. Not sure it adds anything outside of novelty, but whatever. Charred flavor and black licorice for sure. A little sweetness on the finish I'm getting more with repeated efforts. Mid-body, yes, a little thinner than expected. Very interesting but enjoyable.

Welp, #11 of the ESB... just one more to go now. Sad.

Can from the BA stout box.
Inky black color with a small tan head that quickly dissipates.
Rich thick roasty oily chocolaty malt with no de script fruitiness and a hint of oxidation. Moderate warming alcohol. Not bad.

Black Daruma pours black with a small, lacing white head. The aroma is strong amoxicillin. The flavor has notes of black licorice, birth, and persimmon. Good body and feel. Overall, its a very earthy, tree-like flavored stout.

16oz can. Stamped on can bottom is '340JAPAS1327 14:24:30'.
Black colored body, with a rather large mahogany back lit edge with a garnet red reflection. One finger of light tan head. Leaves behind webs of lacing.
Aroma of roasted malts, with chocolate. Has a floral fruity note.
Taste is a very well made Russian Imperial Stout with the persimmon contributing a sweet, honey-like add on. Dark roasted malts with dark chocolate and dark chocolate fudge. A hint of coffee and dark fruit. Long lasting taste profile.
Very smooth mouth feel. Higher ABV% is extremely well hidden, with just a mild warming and no burn. Good carbonation.
Drinks like a cola rather than a 11%ABV beer. The persimmon adds just the right level of sweetness to an already solid RIS.

A - Pitch black pour with moderately dense, creamy lacing.

S - Light roast with some sweet fruit perfume type of aroma. (It's hard to describe, actually.)

T - Nice roastiness with a sweet persimmon and ending with a fruity roasty bitterness. Leaves a lingering roasty bitterness on the palate.

M - Big medium body with gentle, almost creamy carbonation resting on the tongue.

O - This is a really nice stout. Liked it!
