A work trip to Brazil this week, gave me the chance to sample some local delights. Imagine my surprise as I wonder down the Avenue Atlântica in Copacabana Beach, Rio de Janeiro, when I spy a bar called “Top Beer”, well that has got to be worth a try me thinks.

The waiter kindly explained that the House Beer was Cintra Pilsner, as he pointed to its dark green and red sign on the outside of the Bar. So I duly ordered one, he look pleased to have fooled yet another crazy foreigner with his traditional Brazilian drink patter – after all, it was warm to me, but only a crazy Englishmen would sit outside in what is Brazil’s Winter, so he’s bound to try the local “Bud” – right?

Presentation: Typical Euro-Lager appearance, light golden, filtered to absolute perfection, and with a creamy looking perfect white head that looks false, but appealing. I have to give marks for presentation; it does deserve a fair crack of the whip here.

Nose: It reminds me of the smell of Stella Artois that has been left around in a Can, or Glass, in the morning after the night before, from some Student party in the 1980’s. Once smelled, always remembered – hard to forgot.

Taste: Sweet malts mixed with a light whiff of English Lager-Shandy. Sticky finish when not absolutely chilled.

Mouthfeel: Erm, well there is a slight sensation of liquid in the mouth, oh no there isn't, or is there? Hmmm, maybe there is!?

Drinkability: Check Please!!!

Overall: With a name like Cintra, I somehow kept thinking of Lemons. Appropriate really – this really is a “Lemon” of a Lager. Just another one of those “average”, macro-produced, pseudo-pilsners, which could be from a Hot Country anywhere on the Globe.

Wow. really. I approached this beer with the learning from the recent beer-tasting article where they suggest not to try things if you're just go'n diss 'em.

But man, oh, man, this beer takes the friggin cake. no, it's not the worst I have tried but it ranks among them.

I poured it first in a poorly lit room. it seemed so pale, I went over to some hallogen lighting to see it at its best:

This is as close to water as beer gets. it's so pale and translucid, it could light up the room in the absence of those hallogens. plus, no head, just scarce and dull carbonation.

The smell....well, it's hard to rate, provided there is none. just this slight hop aroma. oh-so slight that nose-in-glass, i could clearly smell my lunch much more.

The taste, well, here comes the other big dilemma. i mean, when you put this in your mouth, it fizzes up for a sec, and when that fades, there is LITERALLY no taste. I'm not being sarcastic, I guess i've never been this objective in my entire life. the solemn proof that you drank it is a liquid feel in the mouth.

as for the rest of the brew, this is my interpretation of the results:

yes, it's empty bullet points. i'm getting abstract.

Found this at a liquor store in the international section, so I figured I try a bottle for $2.

Appearance: clear yellow in color with a short 1/2" head. Some large carbonation bubbles stick to the glass.

Smell: the aroma was almost non-existant except for some grass clippings.

Taste: the flavor is a weak combo of very light malt, grass, and only a hint of hops.

Mouthfeel: dry and mildly crisp mouthfeel.

Drinakbility: marked low as this is nothing more than some grassy flavored water. If you stumble across this like I did, avoid it.

Bottle at a Portuguese restaurant, chosen at random from the three Portuguese beers on offer.

The waiter poured the beer into a non-chilled glass (good!), but so gingerly as to forestall any chance of forming a head (bad). This produced a slender glass of perfectly clear light gold beer, like filtered apple juice. A few white bubbles feebly form a thin ring.

Bit of sweet sour-apple aroma.

And..hey! it actually tastes like something! Mostly a generic citron, with some resin in the finish, in which a nasty metallic taste sometimes emerges. Malt present only as sweetness.

The pour appears to have preserved lots of carbornation. It's as prickly as mineral water. Bubbles constantly stream up from the bottom. Pretty, but prickly.

"O Sabor da Conquista"? I wouldn't go that far.

This beer pours a water pale yellow color. It looks as though one drop of yellow food coloring were dropped into twelve onces of water. The head is a half and inch to start with, but vanishes into nothing in seconds. The aroma has a very faint malt sweetness, but mostly there is nothing to smell. The taste like the aroma, but even more faint. The mouthfeel is of carbonated water. Overall, this beer isn't bad because it taste or smells bad. It is bad because it as to taste or smell. I will not drink this again.

The most remarkable aspect of this beer is the colour.
If you pour it and stand the glass next to the empty bottle they appear to be both the same colour and have the same shiny appearance. This to me is disconcerting, and unappealing.
There is a vague citrus note both on the nose and the taste. The taste has some understated malty blandness , and not too much bitterness to crow about.
The beer has an oily mouthfeel and this combined with lack of carbonation makes it pretty damn ordinary.
Bit of a no brainer on drinkability of this one.
Dont bother.
When those Brazilians go all cock a hoop about their World Cup prowess it may pay to remind them that at least one of their beers is crap

Ole..., ole, ole, ole...., ole..., ole. A Brazilian brew, from the land of Caprinhas, let's give it a whirl. Popping the can I get the classic waft of adjunct lager, rice grains and no hops. Pours to a bright yellow with a creamy foam head that laces as it slowly recedes. On the taste this brew is the classic adjunct but worse only slightly bitter, watery and flat. This brew has no body and not much flavor. I see it's only use as chugging ice cold to quench thirst or to boil your brats in. Other than appearance this brew fails all other categories. If you have a choice between this and a caprinha, opt for the caprinha.

A - Pale, Small head forms leaving little to no lacing

S - Faint citus hops and some off sweet malt smells but very very weak and uninviting.

T - Plain and watery. Some lemony hop flavour and very little bitterness. Smooth and sweet.

M - Very thin. Low fiz makes this very smooth and easy to drink for a pilsener.

D - Easy to drink because of its watery base but not inviting at all

Picked this up as a single at a local convenience store. Has a freshness date of Jun/09, not sure if that is the bottling date or best by date. Pours a clear medium yellow color with a pretty nice looking creamy white head. Retention is not bad and it even leaves a bit of lacing on the glass.

Smells like wet grains with a mild floral and grassy hop aroma. Does not smell bad, but is pretty faint.

Hmmm, the taste is where this one starts heading a hurry. Melting plastic infused cardboard describes the flavor of this beer pretty well. Stale graininess? Check. There is some sort of bitterness there, but usually hops dont provide this foul of an aftertaste. Drain pour contemplation ensues...not a good sign. Hopefully our Olympians in 2016 will have better options than this poor offering. This would make even a poor Adjunct Lager, and as a pilsner it's atrocious.

Poured into a Pilsner Glass.

Appearance - about as weak and ordinary as you can get. Pale, faint yellow, that looked as if it were going to disappear due to its weakness. Two inch head that disappeared after the second sip. Medium lacing.

Smell - There was an aroma? I could detect the slightest amount of aroma. Might have just been the glass I was smelling.

Taste - Very weak. If there were more of it, it wouldn't be too bad. Slight lemon, no bitterness, mild sweetness at the end.

Mouthfeel - A good smooth pilsner. Still boring though.

Drinkability - I could drink more of these, but why would I?

bought in to add some spice to the south american lagers.. ummm, didn't really do much ... has a simple good lacing to it ... Brazilians play soccer on the beach .... pours a pale golden colour ... is refreshing... lacks anything real in flavour and needs more crispiness!

Brazil has so many industrial lagers in its market, it's not even funny. Here's one that made its way to the US. On to the beer:

This lager gets poured into a stange. A thick, semi-whipped head forms on top a beer of pale straw color with a little sparkling carbonation in the body. The smell....a little husky. Strong macro-corn flavors, astringent hop oils. It could be worse.

Where's the beer? Ok, it's there. Very light in overall flavor. Slightly sweet pale malt, a slightly herbal hop flavor....bland, bland, and bland. On the watery side with a spirt of carbonation.

This beer promises to hold "Rio's real flavor". More like the favela's real flavor. Uninteresting to say the least, and not a beer I'd turn to even if I were to "go Carioca". Hey, GK Skaggs, importers of this beer, leave this in Brazil and bring in some Baden Baden....or another Rio brand called Devassa. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to open a real pilsner.

(BTW, I was in Rio during December 2009. I never saw this beer at any place, including supermarkets. To be fair, I saw one empty crate with the Cintra monikor, but not the beer itself.)

When poured down the side of a half liter glass mug, a thin, bright white head settles over the contents, quickly receding to just a skim, but with some lacing.

The beer is a clear, light straw yellow color, with a lot of sedimentary platelets floating around. May have something to do with the June 2009 brew date (assuming it is not the Best By date, as there is no indication what the date signifies -- either way, it is a year and a half past and not a good sign for a Pilsner).

What little aroma is detected has a faint, white bread smell and little else. The flavor (what there is of it) follows suit, with little of interest other than a light grain presence followed by a smattering of hops that disappears pretty quickly after the swallow. At least the carbonation is plentiful, giving it a modicum of drinkability.

Not something I would buy without checking the date. If it was fresh, it might make an acceptable session beer for a day on the beach in Rio, but only if nothing else was available.

Looks and smells like a pilsner. Persistant off white head. Strong hop flavor which is found mostly in the aftertaste. It really tastes a little watered down. Nothing unique in the smell, which has some metalic whiffs in it. Aftertaste is bad, but at least its not too strong. A little flat, it really feels like I'm having bad water. It's drinkable, but barely. I don't think I'd pick this up again.

Format: a light brown 330mL bottle with a pretty tacky-looking macro label.

Appearance: a very light pale yellow colour with chunky carbonation visible through the centre of the glass only. A small white head sits at a thin cap without lacing. Looks like every very cheap macro beer, which is what it is.

Aroma: a very light aroma of cheap grains and a touch of grass.

Taste: not very much here either - just those light cheap grains without the grass hops on the nose. A touch of malt.

Aftertaste: drops away quite quickly, which is to be expected.

Mouth feel: light in body without being too watering, with an okay carbonation - moderate to higher. Not much flavour in this beer.

Overall: definitely not the best pilsener in the world, but it is also the cheapest I have ever seen at AU$32 a case of 24. Whether or not it is worth it to have a pretty boring beer just because it is cheap is up to the individual. It isn't special, but it is inoffensive and reasonably refreshing when ice cold.

I had this beer in Medellin, Colombia and I really can not think of anything positive to say about it. It pours light, flat, little carbonation, and has a cloudy appearance. It does not have any bite, but it did have metallic edge, with hints of hops and rice. The Alcohol content is question, I believe it is below what is stated on the can.
