Walking into The Barley Mill Pub and sitting down at the bar I felt like I was in Telluride. The walls are all wood, and it's got a very lodge-like feel to it. The "oriental rug" carpet is also kind of hippy-ish too, and the Greatful Dead theme just completely rounds that out with a "Steal Your Face" neon in the window and roses strung up below a "skull and Roses" mural above the bar. They really love their Dead! I, however, remarked to my friend after about a half an hour, that I'd never be able to work there - I'd only be able take so many Dead tunes in one day! ;)

There are comfortable, tall-backed booths in the main room, as well as some regular tables; and the whole place is adorned with photos and paintings and interesting little items hung about. There's also a pool table in the side room, and it seems like a pretty decent place to hang out.

The food is pretty much the same as it is at the other McMenamin's establishments (a few more wraps here, a few less sandwiches there), and several items are named for the Dead: Phil's Fries, Jerry's Hamburger, and Cosmic Charlie's Chicken Wrap.

The beer and wine are, of course, McMenamin's with two guest beers on tap (PBR being one of them) and bottles of Coor's Light. They have the regulars (Hammerhead, Ruby, Terminator, etc.) and some rotating stuff. I enjoyed their 26th Anniversary Ale as well (this is the oldest McMenamin's Pub), and it was pretty good.

Overall, it seems to me to be pretty much what they set it up as: a laid-back, low-key place to hang out, listen to a few tunes, have a few beers, and maybe play some pool or have a bite to eat. And the decor makes it just that little bit more entertaining: it's interesting, charming, and kind of playful and self-mockingly funny. I enjoyed the trip for sure, but it's not my favorite McMenamin's location.

This is right down the street from my brother's place, and it works nicely as a neighborhood pub. There is a Grateful Dead theme to it, but you need not be a big fan to get a kick out of the zany pictures and nostalgia pieces. The workers are pretty laid back but still deliver your food in a timely manner. They are also pretty knowledgeable about the beers they have, and can tell you tidbits about what goes good with what. I haven't been to many McMenamins pubs in this area, but this is a great introduction. A family-oriented place thats great for hanging out.

This is another small neighborhood McMenamin's, and its really a great place to hang out. I've wound down the evening here, and the peculiar floor layout, the eclectic decor (Theme: Dead), and the selection of board and card games, its very nice atmosphere. The beer selection is average, there were the standard house brews plus a couple cheap lagers. The beer is good, and all I had were the french fries, which were a nice addition to the beer. It would be a great neighborhood pub if it was in my area.
