SpontaanSpontaan
Notes: Spontaan is brewed with organic malt and oats that grew next to the brewery. We used the last cold night of the brewing season 2019/2020 to cool down the beer in the coolship. The natural microorganisms settled in the beer and caused a spontaneous fermentation. After 22 months in red wine barrels, we blended the beer and re-fermented it in bottles. The beer shows notes of blood orange, wood and red wine. Bottled February 2022, 710 bottles

Pours a slightly cloudy, deep amber coloration with a medium, fluffy head. Smells of doughy malt and fruity esters, with notes of tart green apple, gooseberry and apricot, as well as some tannic wood and hints of musty funk. Taste is an excellent balance of doughy malt, fruity esters, with notes of green apple, grapefruit, gooseberry and apricot, as well as distinct, tannic oak and hints of musty, cheesy funk. Finishes with a medium tartness and some fruity esters and tannic wood lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

The name and label description make a real point about this being spontaneously fermented in a coolship, which I kinda assumed they had always done, while the flavor profile really isn't a radical departure from their previous brews either. I guess they used to harvest yeast from the area before, not sure, an interesting question. But anyhow, this makes for another fine Wild Ale with quite expressive and vibrant estery fruit notes to it, with those apple, gooseberry and apricot notes typical for Kemker being supplemented by a zesty grapefruit presence here, as well as mild funk, which is perhaps just a tad more intense than I'm used to from them, and distinct, tannic oak notes due to aging in red wines barrels for almost two years, which is a bit longer than usual for them as well. One of their best to me so far, a real joy to drink.
