L- Pours a hazy, blonde orange. A one finger, creamy white head that leaves much lacing.
S- Wonderful citrus hop smell with malty backing. Also some funk.
T- Very nice balance in which the resin hoppiness and malt blend allows a candied orange through. Resin sticks around.
F- A medium mouthfeel with wonderful warming. Oily and slick, just the way I like it.
O- Stumbled ob to this place and glad I found it.

A- Pours a thin white head atop a cloudy orange beer. Nice drink by drink step lacing and decent head retention.
S- Strong citrus/hops aroma, very nice.
T- Grapefruit as well as other citrus flavors. Crisp bitterness on the tail end of each sip. "Clean."
M- Pleasent mouthfeel...full without being heavy.
D/O- A "sessionable" IPA from a VERY nice brewpub in Rockford, IL. This is one beer that Carlyle is known for and rightfully so.

Had on tap at the brew pub on 4/7/10. Legend on the menu claims that it is brewed with at least two times more hops than most IPAs, or something like that.
Thick head that dissipates not too quickly. Dark gold color. Cloudy does not describe the appearance--brackish, thick, impenetrable. I'd associate this more with not-quite-mature homebrew than a pro IPA. I thought it might have been chill-haze and waited for it to clear up, but it didn't. I don't know if this is normal or if the tap lines were mucked up, or what.
The appearance did not detract from the hoppy, hoppy smell, however. Some sweet, some pine, some grapefruit, pleasant without being extreme or out of the ordinary.
Tasted like an IPA. As you might expect from the appearance, it felt a bit....thicker then I would have liked. Like the smell it was nothing unusual for the style: nicely balanced, very drinkable, but not extremely bad or amazing. It hit that spot, the spot you want hit when you drink an IPA, where the bitterness meets the floral and the sugars and they all try to make peace with one another, but it didn't go beyond that. Did I mention it was hoppy?
I'd drink it again, but I wouldn't drive an hour just to have it.

On tap at the brewpub in Rockford.
Poured a cloudy orange with concentric rings of lacing. Resiny and herbal hop aroma, with very light citrus in the background.
Big presence of pale malt with a balancing herbal hop character that contributes a moderate level of bitterness. Aftertaste is grassy, herbal, and dry with some residual notes of cereal grain or puffed wheat. Medium bodied with a strong maltiness. Hops are balanced, and it's not much of an extreme IPA in the American sense. One pint was easy to finish, even though it was on the dry side, it would make a fine session ale.

If you like hoppy beers this is the one for you. I do and it is my favorite Carlyle brew.
The appearance is cloudy but not unattractive and the mouth feel is about average, nothing distinctive either way. Now, the good part. I find it very drinkable and can down many pints without being flavor-stuffed. The beer smells great, very hoppy. The flavor is interesting and different from most of their beers and is sharp and bitter. The hops kick you right in the tongue, and hard!
If you are not sure about IPA's approach this one in increments. Get used to a normal IPA and when you need the hard stuff go for the Humulus Lupulus. It's great.

On tap at brewery. All hops yes, but I don't think it's a bad thing. Hazy orange. The aroma was a little reserved, but it came through on the taste. Better than I expected actually. I would have liked to try more from what they had to offer...Hopefully being close by I'll be able to visit them again.

This was a cloudy brew, the color of light brown sugar, with a sudsy head that persisted, producing droopy lacing. It has a terrific aroma, fresh, floral, strongly hoppy. Outstanding nose!
Taste was stong bitterness, light on the malt flavor. Hops were floral, earthy, a little grassy. Very little pine or citrus. There was a persistent bitter finish. Good though.
Light to medium body, malts were expressed as some stickiness-chewiness. Drinkability was reduced some by the one-dimensional flavor. Hops were good, a bit more balance would have been better.
