WELL, The Bier Band plays at an Oktoberfest every year in MINSTER, OH (First Saturday in October). We stay at the Days Inn in Sidney that happens to be right near Kroger.

The Minster Oktoberfest usually only serves crap beer. It's sponsored by Anheuser-Busch and they typically have Bud, Bud Lite and Amber Bock served up in HALF GALLON PLASTIC JUGS. One year they had a small beer booth that was serving Wooden Shoe Beer... an nice local offering that's contract brewed by Barrel House in Cincinnati under the "Heritage Brewing Co." name. I think that AB squelched that in 2007! HOWEVER, that being said... The Bier Band LOVES to perform at Minster (it's the PEOPLE.... not the bier...)

So... being that we can only get CRAP BEER at the Minster Oktoberfest, we get our PRELUBE on at Kroger!

What a GREAT SELECTION for a small MidWest town. I'll bet that the Kroger beer sales peak around Oktoberfest because of The Bier Band! Lot's of tasty CRAFT BEERS to select from... and all are kept cold. They don't take advantage of you on PRICE either... quite reasonable.

So, if any Sidney Kroger employee is reading this.... Stock up for 2008!... Minster Oktoberfest takes place on Saturday, October 4th, 2008. The Bier Band will be there and WE NEED GOOD BIER.

UPDATE: This Kroger remodeled in early 2009 and does not have half the beer selection that it used to. A few common micros like Great Lakes / Sam Adams is all you will find.

___

This is my most frequent beer stop and has the best selection of any place in Shelby County.

Medium size selection. I get Victory here often. Also has Great Lakes, Brooklyn, Chimay, Fuller's, and a few other nice selections.

I do have a few problems with this place.

The first is that most of their selection is crappy imported pilsners. How many crap import skunky pilsners does one store need? It's about 1/2 of their craft beer selection!

The second problem is that even when they do carry something not a crap imported pilsner, it's from a second-tier brewery or one run by AB. FireStation5, Black Dog, etc. are not good!

The tird problem is bottle turnover. I found a two year old 6-pack of Prima Pils, missing one bottle, and they would only give me 1/6 off the price. I would have been much more pissed had the remaining 5 not still tasted delicious.

On the plus side, you can find some good deals here. Erdinger Hefe is usually $5.99, and Hoegarden is $6.99.

2020 Update: Nothing special here, folks. Move it along. It's been awhile since this has been a good spot for beer.

This is rather unique for a Kroger, art least around here that I have seen. Inside the Kroger is a liquor store, and a nice looking beer area. I was pleasantly surprised to see more beers than at a typical Kroger. I spotted beers such as Chimay, Orval, Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout, a couple from Rogue and Ayinger. I did not however see anything from Great Lakes. Furthermore, being mid-September, where are the Oktoberfests? Service pretty typical from a grocery store. Bottom line, better selection than a typical grocery store, but not that impressive unless you have nowhere else to go.

A large grocery store with lots of space for beer & wine. They have an enclosed wine cooler and a state liquor store inside. They have very large coolers with space for all the macros and several offers from the smaller ones. Including 4 Sam Adams spots including a seasonal, couple spots for Leinenkugel, Anchor & others. A shelf area for U.S.A. special brews and a shelf area for beers of the world with offerings from Orval, Chimay, Fischer, Young and Belhaven. Service is so so and nothing from Ohio brewers but the rest of the store is very well worth a stop. Just off I-75 on the right.

Well for folks who know Krogers it is probably a surprise to see this listing here since they're normally a macro vendor supreme, with side trips into a few imports. That's what I expected when I walked into the beer section and, boy, was I surprised. But here's the deal - I'm checking this store at lunch and find they have several great areas for deli items, lunch, etc., so I head over to the Beer/Wine area. I'm looking only at the cooler and seeing the normal setup. Then I turn toward the Wine/State Store section and YOWSER. I'm looking right at big set of shelves with a hand-lettered sign up over the top that says "Beers of the World." No kidding, and here are some: Fullers (several) Youngs (most) Belhaven and the other Scottish brews, no fewer than a half dozen Irish, all the Chimays in various bottle sizes, some African, Eastern Europe, most of the Asians except the Rim, etc. Sixers, lots of singles of the best stuff, didn't see any mix and match, but...

Needless to say, I was shocked as I've never seen this before outside the Ralph's chain (owned by Krogers) on the West Coast. Though I didn't have time today, I'm going back soon and talk to their Beer/Wine manager to get the story behind this great selection.
