From BeerAdvocate Magazine #74 (Mar 2013):

Mississippi Blonde doesn’t fall short, as some may think. The style is a tough one to crack, but Bent River prevailed here. Not the cleanest brew, but with a bit of complexity and even drinkability, it makes due and keeps our palates happy, if not content.

STYLE: American Blonde Ale
ABV: 4.3%

LOOK: Clear pale golden, lots of lace

SMELL: Nutty, doughy, dried grass, lemon pith, herbal, clean

TASTE: Very crisp, light bodied, wet, grassy, faint hoppiness, animal feed, mild bitterness, mineral, yeast, very dry, grainy finish

The Mississippi blonde ale is the "light beer" for the Bent River Brewing Company. It poured a pale yellow with a white head. It had a slightly hoppy aroma. It was well enough carbonated to have a pallet cleansing feeling. But the only taste I could detect was just a subtle hop flavor. It didn't have much body or other character besides slight hop flavor. This is the kind of beer that would go well on a hot day as a thirst quencher.

Yellow, lemon color with a haze. Okay starting head which settles to a film of bubbles on the glass. Little lace--a couple of streaks here and there.

The smell contains some obvious adjuncts, most likely corn. Raw grain dominates and I cannot tease out any hop notes. Very much like a Bud or Miller Lite.

The taste is a marked improvement to the smell. First, I do get some definitive hop bitterness. While not complex, the hop does provide a nice balance. The malt base still dominates, but it is less grainy and provides a richer body (for a pale lager). This indicates to me the adjuncts are less of a presence than I felt the smell suggested. The carbonation is quite high.

Overall, if one can get by the pedestrian smell, this isn't a terrible beer--certainly refreshing

My roommate brought these home and shared, so thanks Tom. My 1st beer ever from this brewery located along the shores of the Mississippi River in northwestern Illinois, so it takes its name from the river, not the state. 12oz brown bottle with no freshness date. Not much information on the label and the website is useless, so no way to look up anything about this brew.

The beer poured a hazy pale golden color with just a ½-finger of white head that dissipated in about 15 seconds. There was a lot of small spotty lacing, but that too faded fast.

There was a bit of lemon smell along with herbal hops, and then something of a barnyard odor which is usually not found in blonde ales.

Decent sweet malty background and lots of herbal hop flavors as well as a touch of lemon. It's not very bitter at just 14.2 IBUs which is par for the course in blonde ales, but what was not par for the course was its total lack of fruitiness outside the touch of lemon. It's a very strange blonde ale.

Can't believe how light bodied this is. A very thin thirst quencher with moderate carbonation. Just 4.2% alcohol.

I prefer fruitier blonde ales, but that doesn't mean this one is all bad. It's not typical, but it is very drinkable.

Poured out a clear, golden color with a small, khaki colored head. It smelled of citrus notes with touches of pine and caramel. Sweet caramel taste with a light piney bitterness. A light to medium bodied ale.

I won a basket of beer at a benefit dinner for someone donating a kidney to his father. When they were delivered I pretty much rolled my eyes because they were all like this except for some Acadia Scottish Ale which might be a step up. Anyway, I'd had a Sierra Nevada Oktoberfest collab tonight and still was thirsty so this filled the bill ok for that purpose. If it's hot or warm and you're thirsty for something nondescript, this is fine. If you're looking for something to knock your socks off, this ain't it.

Pours a hazy golden color. 1/4 inch head of an off-white color. Good retention and decent lacing. Smells of pale malt, slight sweet malt, hint of wheat, slight citrus hops, and floral hops. Fits the style of an American Blonde Ale. Mouth feel is smooth and clean, with an average carbonation level. Taste of pale malt, slight sweet malt, hint of wheat, slight citrus hops, and floral hops. Overall, decent appearance, aroma, and blend.

S- light sweet malt.

F- slight hops but the malt dominates. it is almost salty malty. almost like a german lager beer

M- sweet and light bodied, it goes down fairly smooth.

O- its ok but the malt dominates too much and there isnt much hop there.

Pours a soft, soapy white head. A soft malt nose. Straw gold color. A surprisingly bitter front; hop bitterness and spices (coriander/orange peel flavors). But then a really nice maltiness comes through. The finish is lots and lots of malt with a touch of spice.

This is pretty nice. The front is a little too bitter, but that malt finish is really nice.

O: not a bad lawnmower beer.

Mississippi blonde pours a copper color with almost no head. Light aroma, sweet and crisp. Flavor is light sweet and crisp but barely noticeable. Watery body. Overall it's not bad, but too light even for a light style.
