I have to question whether the 6 pack I purchased was infected. I've only experienced it one other time and with different off flavors, but this was overwhelmingly sour to me, with little flavor rising above the metallic bitterness. If it is not infected it's a terrible example of either an oatmeal stout or a coffee ale, but given the other reviews I feel like this was a lacto-infection or something of the sort. All 6 were drain pours for me unfortunately, highly disappoint as a first experience with this brewery.

Great coffee aroma with a nice dark body beer. Flavor has great coffee flavor with a chocolate flavor finish.

So I had this brew from a small stemmed porter glass...It's appearance is beautiful. Utterly black and opaque with a thick light-brown head. It looks like an espresso. The taste is coffee-like as well....again, espresso, backed by campfire and an undercurrent of grain. It is not a heavy beer....very drinkable and dry. A nice hop bitterness underpins the flavor. This is a medium bodied, approachable and very well made stout.

The head is very thin and quickly dissipates, far too quickly for the aesthetic visual pleasure of a stout. I like lingering and tracing on the glass and there just isn't any of that here. The bitter finish is an unpleasant slight copper on the tongue and the mouthfeel is more like a black ale. I don't mind black ales as long as I know that's what I'm getting, but I like better in stouts the heavy lingering feel like you've just taken a mouthful of really dark rye Bavarian bread in liquid alcohol form. This beer just simply doesn't deliver.

Pours a dark oily black.
Smell is all black coffee.
Taste is a dark roasted coffee, followed by a dark chocolate finish.
I'm not a big stout fan, but this is my favorite of all time.

Pours a black color. 1/5 inch head of a tan color. Slight retention and slight lacing. Smells of coffee, strong roasted malt, sweet malt, and a hint of hops. Fits the style of an Oatmeal Stout. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp, with an average carbonation level. There is also a strong coffee sharpness. Tastes of coffee, strong roasted malt, sweet malt, slight alcohol, and a hint of hops. Overall, weak bodied, simple, and overly sharp.

BENT RIVER UNCOMMON STOUT 12/5/16

Last of the four new brews from the beer club. We don't get this Illinois brewery's products in my state.

a; Opaque black with a half finger thick tan head which disappeared. No lacing.

s: Cold black coffee and dark chocolate.

t; Slightly bitter black coffee and ash. The latter fades later, and slight fruit notes develop, leading to a slightly bitter to sour finish.

m; Medium, good body and moderate carbonation tingle.

o; An OK coffee stout, not quite as pleasant as my favorite low ABV one, Narragansett Autocrat, and not as heavenly as Founders KBS, which coincidentally I had just had at lunch.
