Hazy copper body, fizzy yellow-tinted head that virtually disappears. Smells heavy with spices- cinnamon, nutmeg, followed by brown sugar, dirt (appropriate for a tuber-based beer), and finally a bit of sweet potato. Taste adds a bit more of the namesake, but it'd be difficult to find if I wasn't looking for it. Mostly it's just a baking spice beer, albeit in good ratios and not overwhelmingly spiced. Light body, too much carbonation.
This is definitely a tasty beer, but I want more sweet potato! As it was, it's akin to a lot of pumpkin beers that are missing the pumpkin. Baking spices are yummy, but I was hoping to get a daily serving of vegetables, too.

12 oz. bottle, no bottled on date present. Acquired a single bottle of this stuff as part of a mixed six pack at the local Binny's. 'Wheat Ale brewed with sweet potato and spices'. My first beer from Bent River Brewing Company, based out of Rock Island, Illinois.

Poured into a Duvel tulip snifter.

A - Pours a nice crisp burnt golden orange body, appears aptly carbonated, with one finger of thin fizzy frothy off-white head with good retention. Moderate sticky fluffy lacing. Looks very nice for what it is.

S - A very unique and interesting aroma. Notes of herbs & spices, brown sugar, yeast, caramel / brown malts, nutty. Has a very marzen / oktoberfest feel to it.

T - Taste is the same: malty, nutty, toasty, notes of yeast & spices. Brown sugar, maybe some cinnamon. Wheat is subtle, but noticeable. Wouldn't guess sweet potato without being told, but there is a unique earthiness to this beer, that's for sure. Bit of cola-esque spicing.

M - Feel is smooth, crisp, clean, & easy-drinking. Light-bodied with good carb.

Overall, a unique and interesting first beer from Bent River. Would definitely be interested to try more from this brewery.

12 oz bottle. Clear orange color with thin white head. Smells of malty caramel and vanilla. Sweet on the tongue with cinnamon, caramel, vanilla, and sweet potato pie flavors.

This beer pours a nice dark iced tea color with a fleeting head of only 1/2 finger, then a thin ring. 30% transparency.

Aroma is actually much like a Pumpkin ale, with cinnamon, yam, gourd, and nutmeg. It does smell delicious, like a baked pumpkin pie.

The spice flavors are there, namely cinnamon and nutmeg, followed by citrus peel, sweet potato, and pumpkin filling. The citrus (lemon, orange rind) sort of clashes, and malts begin to wax metallic. Finishes on what I can only say is like juicy fruit gum and day old cola.

The feel is highly carbonated and appropriately so; a medium body and a slightly chalky finish.

Overall, Sweet Potato Ale isn't too bad though it's not great either. Had I bought a six pack, I wouldn't cry. It's easy drinking. It just has a lot to be desired where the clashing comes in.
