O'Carroll's has two sections; a pub and a swankier looking "restaurant" style section. I've had occasion to sit in both sections.

The pub certainly is a typical Halifax pub - well stocked bar, old tables and chairs, various beer signs on the wall, and a few maritime-y doodads. A small stage is in one corner, used for raucous pub performances.
The lounge has nicer, padded seats, linen on the tables, and cloth napkins. It tries to be more upscale, but it's hard not to notice the revellers only a couple feet away, who seem to be having much more fun in the pub.
The food is good, interesting pub fare, well prepared without trying too hard to impress or be "different". They have a decent selection of beers on tap, and it's nice to see plenty of local offerings (besides the ubiquitous local macro Keith's). There are also some imported offerings on tap and bottled, mainly British and Irish standards, with a couple Belgians.
The price is quite decent for what you get. The pub food is obviously cheaper, but even the entrees in the Restaurant only hit $30 at the max. The beer is moderately priced too.
Overall, a decent dining experience, without busting the bank. I'd personally recommend the pub section.

Located in the Historic Properties neighborhood, and around the corner from Split Crow, O'Carroll's is a restaurant-pub that serves as an upscale dining establishment (to the left) and a comfortable pub (on the right). Having enjoyed both sections - the restaurant serving excellent cuisine on a seperate menu - no pub grub here; the pub offering about 2 dozen ales and lagers in addition to pouring a fine pint o' Guinness. In fact, during a recent Haligonian jaunt, friends and I hit it on successive nights simply to enjoy the excellent live music. Wonderful pub venue in a really enjoyable city. And what's wrong with that?

O'Carroll's was one of the many bars in Halifax that I visited. I actually visited last year but misplaced my notes, so I figured I would just wait till someone adds it to the DB...low and behold a year later it is here! The interior is nice dark wood everywhere, dim lighting...Irish themed. They have about 7-10 taps. I had one of the Alexander Keith Brews (ok)...if I'm correct I think Alexander Keith's is the oldest Brewery in North America. I do remember that the bar was empty when my wife and I walked up to the bar. The AK brews were decent but nothing to write home to mom about. We did not eat here so it was a hit & run. Worth a stop in if you are in Halfax, Nova Scotia. My rating could be a little high...but I was in there for not even a full hour...so I have no quarrels...check it out.

This might have been the best fish and chips I ever tried. All the fish in Halifax is amazing. As for the beer, a real brewers town too!! There are 3 or 4 local breweries within a short 4-5 block walk from one another.

O'Carroll's has a bunch of Alexander Keith's and at least one from each of the other local breweries. Plenty of new stuff to try. The people here are so nice and sincere . I think they even gave us a free drink cuz we had to wait more than a few minutes. I love Halifax and O'Carroll's was one of my favorite pubs there.
