Johannes is a pale lager with a full, essential taste, which is due to long aging and a high level of extract.

The creation of the Johannes brand was a joint initiative of the Amber Brewery and the Gdańsk Museum. Part of the income from the sale of beer is allocated to the purchase of exhibits for the museum. Thus, each of the consumers becomes a co-sponsor of the purchased exhibits.

Beer is characterized by clarity and a beautiful amber color. It is balanced and its taste and aroma are very distinctive. The aroma has a solid malt base and classic Polish hops.

Lager is a style known from the Middle Ages. It is a bottom fermented beer aged at low temperatures. The name of our lager is a tribute to the outstanding astronomer and brewer from Gdańsk, Johannes Hevelius.

In respect of his contribution to Gdańsk brewing in 2011, which was announced as the year of Hevelius, we brewed a beer dedicated to him. The creation of the Johannes brand was a joint initiative of the Amber Brewery and the Gdańsk Museum. Part of the income from the sale of beer is allocated to the purchase of exhibits for the museum.

We have been brewing Johannes since 2011.

Re reviewing...I assume this is some kind of pilsner, though not sure from the label. Great to see that it's 6.5%.

Smooth foamy head, quite a dark pilsner colour. Looks great in my wine glass. Aroma was noticeable when poured, warm honey and complex hops dominate.

Quite a heavy malt feel without a huge amount of tongue tingling. The malt taste reminds me a little of a mocne beer such as Warka Mocne or Tatra Mocne...which for me isn't a great flavour. I like the honey hops taste, but it's not quite strong enough to balance out the heaviness of the malt. The dominant flavour is the heavy mocne malt and some Zubr chaotic yeastiness, and honey. It's neither sweet nor bitter, somehow it kind of exists between sweetness and bitterness, between pilsner and mocne, in some kind of lower astral dimension. The alcohol taste is also quite strong. Yet many West Coast IPA's or Belgian IPA's or Quadrupels have double the alcohol with no alcohol taste. So although I do like the hops, I find the overall flavour kind of chaotic and confused. And it's not particularly cheap. A beer such as Namylow or Perla Export is far less confused, punchier, cheaper, lighter and tastier.

A: The beer is crystal clear yellow in color and has a slight amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a thin layer of white bubbles on the surface and a narrow collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Slight aromas of malts or corn-like adjuncts are present in the nose—they are so faint that they are difficult to identify.
T: The taste has flavors of pale and pilsener malts with a light amount of bitterness and faint bits of alcohol.
M: It feels medium-bodied and clean on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer isn't especially flavorful, but I thought that the taste had a good balance between the maltiness and bitterness without being overly heavy on the palate.

Brief impression from a $1.99 500ml bottle purchased at a Key Food supermarket in Brooklyn:

APPEARANCE: Yellow-copper body. Off-white head that lasts about 5 minutes.

AROMA: Not much, really. Faint pilsner malt, I guess. As subdued and reticent as they come.

TASTE: Pilsner malt. Some grassiness. Shallow, simple, dull.

TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, overcarbonated, somewhat refreshing.

OVERALL: Drinkable inoffensive fare with plenty of potential in terms of pairing with food. There are no faults here, but there's plenty of room for improvement.

Spent a few weeks in Gdansk last year and this was my favourite of the beers I tried. Looked good (nice and golden) in the glass, easy to drink (you wouldn't know it was 6.5%) and with a good depth of flavour - sweet but with some complexity to it. I found that taste improved if it wasn't overly chilled (although it should still go in the fridge for a bit). I gave a bottle to my dad who described it as 'quite smooth and sweet' - maybe a little too much for some but I would definitely drink this again if I found it.

500ml bottle poured into half pint

L - slightly cloudy, golden, pours a 5mm thick head, average retention

S - strong honey over white bread. Noted hint of diacetyl and banana.

T - Very sweet. Some honey in the taste, sweet malts. Hops are muted. Finish is a bit too sweet.

M - quite syrupy texture, full bodied, alcohol is apparent. Moderate carbonation.

O - similar to a Hefe in style, this beer has style but the sickly sweet finish is a bit much.
