Heavy crown is our head brewer Joe’s first stout brewed at Torch & Crown. It’s an Imperial Stout brewed with vanilla, coffee, cacao, and a small dose of lactose. This beer is big and roasty with a nice balance of the adjunct additions. The lactose adds a velvet touch to the mouthfeel without making the beer overly sweet.

This one pours a fairly dark black color, with a big fluffy head, and lots of lacing.

This smells like roasty and caramelly coffee, with some light sweet vanilla, dark chocolate, roasted malt, and some maybe even mint aromas?

The base stout is well balanced with roast, so none of the flavor additions enhance the sweetness here too much. It's well balanced, with a tasty and dark roasted coffee character. The vanilla is a mild addition, and the lactose is judicially added - the creaminess is nice, but the lactose doesn't dominate by any means. The base stout is loads of dark chocolate, with some nice roast and an almost herbal/mint like flavor.

This is medium bodied, creamy, rich, and very drinkable, with a great smooth finish.

This brewery is definitely one of the more underrated NYC breweries. They seemingly can run the full gamut of styles well.

Picked this up recently at ShopRite Liquors in Little Falls as I hadn't had anything from Torch & Crown in a while. Loved the appearance of this label, as it seemed like something out of The Great Gatsby, as it was also indicative of the luxuriousness of this beer on the palate. No, this wasn't the best Stout of it's kind that I've had but it was plenty enjoyable as it was fitting for a cold winter's night such as this one!

Of course, this poured dark and was a bit thinner than I expected although the mocha head complemented the liquid nicely, as it bubbled up in a lively manner. No lacing was left behind once the suds settled down as this was a bit thin for an American Imperial Stout. Lots of bitter and baker's chocolate, cacao nibs, and coffee creamer in the nose as the taste contained milk, creamy lactose, a fair amount of roasted coffee, and booze. If someone called this an Imperial Breakfast Stout, I wouldn't disagree with that although there were hints of brisk peppermint and dark fruit in the aftertaste as this was a strong beer that was relatively heavy on the palate and quite cloying in the aftertaste once this fully went down.

Dated 11/10 on the bottom of the can with "YOU ROCK" written below it, this was as easygoing as a beer of this style could be since the alcohol was relatively recessed. Heavy in body, a bit more carbonation and sweetness would have been my preference but as it was, this was a nicely brewed beer that almost called for a packet of sugar to be mixed into it or a piece of cherry pie on the side. One of these would be perfect for a nightcap, or a pick-me-up on a lazy Sunday morning!

Fresh coffee and cream Aroma with slight alcohol underneath. Taste is similar. Slightly, but not overly roasty. Rather smooth for what it is. Chocolate underneath.

2d review. my 1st for brewer.
a) A for crown over black body.
s) Additions are just subtle enough on a back ground of roast. for coffee lovers.
t) Wish for more roast and hops to counter the sweet, but still it's a right mix. Coffee-based dessert wine like.
All there cocoa, vanilla, prune.
f) Feel is the top highlight here for body, and ticklish weight like making love.
o) It adds up to a great I stout.

A: The beer is jet black in color. It poured with a quarter finger high light tan head that left a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface and some lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Moderately strong aromas of dark coffee beans are present in the nose.
T: The taste follows the smell and is very coffee-like but has notes of lactose and cacao nibs that seem like someone added dashes of cream and sugar to your morning joe.
M: It feels medium-bodied and silky smooth on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: I really liked the smooth mouthfeel of this beer and all of the coffee flavors, which were balanced off to some degree by the addition of cocoa nibs and lactose. It is also quite drinkable considering its strength as no alcohol is perceptible in the taste.
