A: The beer is very dark brown in color. It poured with a quarter finger high dark tan head that left a wide collar around the edge and some lacing down the sides.
S: Moderate aromas of toffee are present in the nose along with notes of chocolate and hints of brown sugar.
T: The taste follows the smell and has additional notes of vanilla bean and faint hints of red wine.
M: It feels full-bodied and a bit smooth on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is incredibly drinkable considering its strength and you don't get any alcohol whatsoever in the taste. The only real clue about this beer's strength is from its full body.

Pours out an apple butter brown. Aggressive pour yields two fingers of light tan head. For a 13%, the foam formation on this is stellar. It looks great in the glass.

Nose is oak, dark and bright fruits, brown sugar, toffee/caramel, chocolate/cocoa, vanilla, and a little bit of that Belgian yeast profile. This is a really complex nose here. A lot going on, but these are delicate and softer scents. You get impressions of candied prunes and figs, but also chocolate covered strawberries. The oak sits somewhere in the middle being unobtrusive, but present. You don't smell the booziness until it warms and even then it's mild.

Taste is much of the same from the nose. One key thing that is different is the chocolate presence is stronger. It's uncanny how similar this is to biting into a strawberry flavored Tootsie-Pop. You get that tart fruit first, then it transitions into that iconic candy chocolate flavor of a Tootsie roll.

Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with moderate carbonation. And when I say moderate carbonation, I mean that for a barleywine. There is a nice vibrance to this one. The bubbles are not sharp but plentiful enough to provide a cleansing feeling, preventing this brew from feeling cloying.

Overall this is an incredibly enjoyable barleywine. I love to see breweries dabble in the road less traveled known as barleywines and when they turn out good, they turn out great. Evil Twin does a great job with this one.

On tap at Evil Twin NYC - Dumbo in Brooklyn, NY.

This one pours a very dark brown color, with no head or lacing.

This smells like caramel, toffee, brown sugar, maple, red wine, and vanilla.

Luckily, there's not a lot of vanilla here - it's mostly just sticky sweet barleywine goodness. There's fruitcake, red wine, brown bread, caramel, and brown sugar drizzled all over this one.

This is medium bodied and not very boozy, with a sweet and creamy mouthfeel.

I've liked some of the Great Northern BA barleywines a little bit more than this one, but I still enjoyed it for sure.

A tasty beer albeit a strange one. Has a lot of sweet notes upfront with prominent vanilla and brulee sugar but there is an undercurrent of tannins from the wine barrel aged beer that's blended in. Weird looking beer too with a dark brown body and fizzy, quickly dissipating head. Looks like a glass of cream soda, kind of. One senses the strength but despite what I heard elsewhere I didn't find it to be perceptibly "boozy." Medium bodied, and your lips are a little sticky after sipping.

My favorite Evil Twin beers have (almost) uniformly been of the dark and malty variety, including some excellent barleywines. I'm still on the fence about this one. Glad I tried it but I don't think I'd buy it again (unlike say, those Torst Front and Back room BWs that I'd LOVE to have one more time!).

Served in a teku glass from the can.

Appearance: Mahogany color with medium bubbles to the body. Orange to amber tinted white head which rose half of a fingers length.

Smell: Vanilla bean aroma which makes love to the nose. Lighter than what I expected but tasty to the nostrils.

Taste: Vanilla bean with toffee and hints of soft liqueur.

Mouth: Sticky sweet finish, almost wine like...if you ever drank vermouth this is the beer version of it.

Overall: Good brew. Remixed less bodied version of their barrel aged series. Different density which makes the beer super drinkable. Salud!
