Style: American Amber / Red Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.10%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Prohibition Ale is the first beer we bootlegged back in 1997. Anything but traditional and now a GABF winning brew (2013–American Amber/Red Category), Prohibition pours a deep reddish amber hue, with a fluffy tan head that leaves a beautiful lacing on the glass. A lush, complex aroma teases the senses with juicy grapefruit, citrus, pine, spice and candied caramel malts. Mouth-feel is creamy, with a silky, medium body and modest carbonation.

L: Pours a slightly muddy brown red with a creamy tan head that is fairly small, nice fingers of lacing around the glass.

S: Notes of caramel and toffee, some sweetness, with some notes of pine and light citrus from the hops.

T: The taste follows the smell very closely, with notes of caramel and toffee, some sweetness melded with a light citrus and piney hop.

F: Light to medium body, beer is not quite as smooth or creamy as I would expect in the style.

O: Drinks a little bit like a lighter barleywine, not bad but not fantastic.

The appearance was a nice looking hazy amber color with a nice looking foamy white head that dissipated fairly quickly. Spotty lacing glossed the sides of the glass. Semi-rings of the lacing is clingy. The smell started off with an ample amount of sweet caramel riding into the sweet sticky citrusy hops. The taste takes the previously mentioned flavors and melds together nicely. There’s a nice sweet caramel to orange aftertaste leading into the sweet semi-wet finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a nice sessionability about it. Carbonation is fairly light. Tangy to sweet orange caramel stickiness rides my tongue nicely. Overall, I say this was a pretty good Amber/Red ale. I’d have again.

On-tap served in a stemmed glass at Wishbeer, Bangkok.

It comes with hazy amber ruddy hue and thick silky tan head as a gorgeous showcase. The head just slowly dissipates to a long-lasting bubble sheet atop and leaves sticky yet refined lacing patch and spot all around.

It has a nice mixture of hop and malt in the aroma. Malt is the backbone providing its caramel, sweet candy, toasted bread, dough, and sugar while hop yielding its juicy orange, grapefruit, pine, floral, and spice.

The taste is actually harmoniously balance with hop to make it crisp and juicy with notes of citrus, lime, pine, spice, and some bitter kick. Malt at the same time provides its richness of caramel, sweet candy, sugar, toasted bread, and biscuit to balance and it is done well.

The body is medium with creamy smooth mouthfeel from its good crispness and some lively carbonation. The feeling is well-rounded with a pleasantly dry finish.

Good hoppy amber with rich malt bill and lots of hop to make it much deep and tasty.

Poured from a bottle, it appears hazy and unfiltered, with a deep amber coppery tone topped of with a very thin head of white froth, which dissipates quickly, leaving thin lacing, but reappears on swirling. Aroma is strongly caramel malt, together with hoppy notes of resin, florals and some fruit. Taste starts off lightly sweet, with notes of caramel, resin, florals and some fruit, then earthy undertones of bread, biscuit and dough, before finishing with bitter, though fairly abrupt. Carbonation feels quite lively, a bit too much for my taste, but strangely enough, it is paired with a rather thin and watery feel, especially towards the end.

Hazy, dark amber, beige foam, ok.
Malt, caramel, citrus notes, and a strong piney effect.
Quite bitter taste, pine again, citrus fruit, citron.
Average body, long, resinous aftertaste, well balanced by malt and caramel.

A: crystal clear; if held to a light, medium brown with mahogany highlights; 1 finger khaki head that receded to a thin collar; OK lacing;

S: black coffee, tobacco, and sweet malt;

T: black coffee and tobacco from start to finish; sort of a weak black coffee; moderate bitterness on the finish;

M: medium bodied; moderate carbonation; lightly dry finish;

O: I had a decidedly different experience than many others; my glass was clean and the lines were clean;

Medium brown with a reddish tinge, filtered without visible carbonation, topped with a finger of beige head. Great sea foam lacing.

Smells of toasted malts, caramel, a hint of firey hops.

Malty, caramel toasted notes, overall like a well done piece of toast. Fresh and malty and toasted. Slight citrusy hops, little bitterness, but mostly biscuity toast.

Medium, chewy body, moderate, foamy carbonation.

Really enjoying the style, and bready, chewy quality of this brew. Got on wish beer, drank in Chiang mai, Oct 28th, 2016.
