Scarlett Red RyeScarlett Red Rye
Notes: With a creamy body and rich roasty flavors, Scarlett is the perfect complement to the cooler months of Fall & Winter. This rye ale pours a deep red with a sticky off-white layer of foam and medium levels of carbonation. Note the aromas of fresh rye bread, caramel malt and earthy hops. Sweet malts are accented by subtle flavors of caramel, toffee, and chocolate. Notes of toasted grain, leather, and a mild peppery spice lead to a medium-dry finish.

Imbibed at City Beer Store on 9/1/12.

Clear, amber/ red ale with sticky white head that barely covers the top. Lots of copper caramel malt aroma with some chalky chocolate. A little bit of weedy, green, wet hops with a swirl. Taste starts with roasty chocolate and coffee. Not too bitter, but smooths out the drink towards the end. A little bit of metallic/blood flavor in the middle for good measure. Spiciness of rye is there, but barely noticeable. Handled the grain well IMHO. Dry finish, balanced MF. This reminds me of an unimperial version of Betrayal. Very good and sessionable. Would be good in the fall with these flavors. I wish they released this in six packs.

L: Darker red color with notes of orange in it, pours with a small thing white head that leaves rings of lacing around the glass.

S: Notes of toffee, caramel, chocolate, some raisins, and spice, and a little nut in the background.

T: Starts out with toffee, caramel, and chocolate, that gives away to notes of nut, some hops, and spice. Quite a bit of things going on here, that finishes with a caramel bitterness.

F: Medium body and creamy carbonation

O: Overall, this is a pretty average drinkable amber ale.

L: Dark cloudy brown, with a thick and lasting head.
S: Almost candy-like, flowery as well.
T: This might sound weird, but there's an almost coppery twinge to this beer at first. The bitterness is balanced well with the sweetness.
F: Coats the back of the mouth/throat, leaving a hint of bitter to linger after the flavor. Just enough fizziness to be refreshing.
O: Not Bad. Personally, this one isn't to my taste.

From an undated bottle. Love the artwork on this one. Pours a dark red color with a finger of tan head. Smells of roasted malts and rye. Medium mouthfeel, a good amount of carbonation. Taste is rich and malty with some notes of spice and chocolate. A nicely balanced rye beer.

Deep mahogany murky business here, nice foam/retention though. Nose is heavy on the rye + malt sweetness, with veins of chocolate and even a touch of dark fruit. Palate is similarly heavy on those notes. Drinkability suffers here under the weight of it all. I think something a little more measured would yield better results.

DATE TASTED: August 22, 2015 ... GLASSWARE: Brew at the Zoo pint... OCCASION: drafting fantasy football in the rugged Tecmo-themed Northeast Premiere League--taking AP with pick #4... APPEARANCE: dark, mahogany red--almost blood-red when held to the light--with an off-white head that retains well; creamy lacing rises in fiery sun spirals... AROMA: as with most reds, a nice, toasted malt treats the nostrils, with the citric hops--mango, at first--giving way to the pepper, smoke and cheddar jack kick I am hoping is in the taste as well ... PALATE: creamy, textured, sessionably swift to the throat; a pint that isn't long for this world... TASTE: a woody character pairs with toasted bread and sharp cheese; thick malts blanket pepper and licorice--a complexity of flavors rearing up from the glass...something of a muddle, with a thick prunish flavor spiking the finish... but also challenges in a pleasant way... OVERALL: I have had nothing but great experiences with Speakeasy, and once more--thanks to brother Jer for his purchase--I find another offering with a bit different profile... no big citrus or bold attack, but rather a variety of subtly textured flavors that encourage sip upon sip... a good pub pint for food paring...

Picked up a single from TW Arrowhead on May 1 for $1.79. Bottled on 11/12/14; received at TW on 4/2/15.

Beer poured reddish brown with a nice tan head that is leaving lacing behind.

Nose is a nice caramel roast with hints of citrus.

Taste is very well balanced. Caramel malts with a nice rye spiciness round nicely with the citrus hops.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and fairly refreshing.

Overall this brew combines elements that i truly enjoy. The rye spice, caramel malt, and citrus hops blend so well for my pallet. Definiely will pick up a sixer when fresher!
