Visited Mar/2016

This place was so messy: the attendants couldn't help us find a table, the service was terrible, the cues were horribly organized. The line to get the food and to pay was the same, so I had to wait for people to pay while I and others were trying to get food.

I was very displeased here, I can't recommend enough for people to avoid it: there are plenty other places in Dublin with better atmosphere, food and drinks.

Good ole O'Neill's! I started my New Year's celebration there and met some great people. It was there that my friend learned Irish people walk out of the bathroom and use other patron's shirts to dry their hands (of course jokingly). This place really had a good pub feel to it and apparently has live music from time to time. If you find yourself in Dublin swing by and grab a pint. There will be plenty of smiles to greet you.

Drink on!

My favorite spot in Dublin is a bit off the beaten path. Looking for something not quite in the middle of everything, but not quite completely out of touch with the heart of the city, my brother and I booked reservations at a B&B called O'Neill's, which was right across Pearse St from the back end of Trinity College.

The pub on the first floor is, obviously, owned by the same folks who ran the place where we stayed. So we hit it up for some pints a couple times. We visited a few others while we were in Dublin, but this was far and away my favorite. While the others tended to be overwhelmingly crowded with both locals and tourists, this particular O'Neill's (there are, of course, about 100 pubs in Dublin called O'Neill's) had just a small-ish number of friendly customers.

The interior was the classiest thing I'd ever seen. Beautiful all-wood furniture, booths, and dividers graced the entire place. The bar sort of bisects the the establishment, cutting it into two halves -- each facing out to a different street, as this spot is on a corner.

Great classic books that you're free to read line the shelves, and they had the local paper sitting out as well. While I probably only went to 6 places, the selection was the best I saw. Every place had one or two stouts, one light lager (generally Heineken or Bud) and *maybe* some other ale, like a Smithwicks or something else. This place had all those plus Kilkenny, a couple other lagers, and several other English and Irish ales. Probably around 10 beers on tap in total.

If I were to ever own a bar, the sheer classic appeal of this place would be my model. I can't say enough good things. And the B&B upstairs was great as well. Very friendly folks own and run all of it. If you're in Dublin doing the Trinity College tour or something, head about 3-5 blocks down Pearse St from the main entrance, away from Temple Bar and all that, and you'll spot O'Neill's on your left. Relax, grab the paper, have a few pints, and just soak it all in.
