BEER INFO

Brewed by:
Steinhaus Brewing Co.
California, United States

Style: Leipzig Gose

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Crisp, dry, almost puckery, and undeniably satisfying, Mission St. Gose (pronounced "go-zuh" is fermented in the traditional style, using wild hops, bold spices, and slightly salted water. The result is a uniquely refreshing beer with equal elements of sour spiciness and wheaty fruit, mellowed by an enticing blend of coriander and salty sea breeze aromas.

Type: 22-oz. bottle
Glass: Clear 23-oz. wheat beer glass
From: Trader Joe’s in La Mesa (San Diego), Calif.
Price: $2.99
Purchased: Nov. 10, 2016
Consumed: Nov. 22, 2016
Reviewed as: Gose
Misc.: Best before April 25, 2016

First time I saw this in stores and had to pick it up for the low price of $2.99. I generally enjoy the Trader Joe’s Steinhaus brews, especially for the value. Interested to see if this one is any good.

Poured a light yellow semi-clear color with two fingers of frothy white head. Lots of bubbles come up from the bottom of the glass. Outstanding spotty lacing. World-class foamy retention. (Sight - 4.50)

Smelled a nice mix of salt and spice. Specifically got wheat, grass, coriander, rather dry, tart, bread, cereal and Sweet Tart candy. (Smell - 4.00)

Taste followed the nose nicely, maybe not quite as good. Got wheat grass, coriander, salt, peppery spices, cereal, hay, tartness and citrus zest. (Taste - 4.00)

Light body. Oily texture. Lively carbonation. Long, dry, tart finish. (Feel - 4.25)

Still new to this, but really liked this. Would have to look back, but might be my favorite Gose yet. EDIT: It is, the best of the eight I’ve tried. (Overall - 4.00)

Poured into a large wine glass from 22 oz. bomber. Pour is golden in color and has a bit of wheat haze and shows a thin cap of white foam.

Aroma is a bit bland, dominated by barley grain. Just a hint of tartness wafts up from the glass and the coriander doesn't present itself in any meaningful way either. Warming does yield some citric hop notes which battle the spice front at times.

Taste follows with neutral grain, a hint of salt and a bit of lemon on the finish. Feel is decent though a bit lightly carbonated vs. my preference in the style, and again has a subdued tartness level. Overall a rather bland and cautionary segue into the style.

22 ounce bottle, best before 04/25/17. Served in a Ritterguts Gose glass, the beer pours a hazy straw gold color with about an inch white head. Head retention and lacing are both decent enough. At first the aroma was kinda skunky, but that did go away. Once the skunk left, the brew smelled like salt, coriander and some wheat/grainy malt. It tastes like salt, coriander, wheat/grainy malt, lemon peel and some bitterness and skunk that kicks in more as the beer warms up. Mouthfeel/body is light/medium, it's a bit coating with a good amount of carbonation. There just seems to be a lot missing with this beer, it's not one of the better goses I've tried. Can't complain much since it was only $2.49 a bomber, but usually Trader Joe's puts out better efforts than this. This looks good, but it just goes downhill from there unfortunately. With that being said, I didn't have any problems finishing the bottle so it's not like it was bad.
