We were just going to stop in to try the impossible-to-find Cnudde beers, all 2 of them... simple enough.

If you're a fan of Flanders Oud Bruin, this is a rare gem of a place. We did get our fill of the Oud Bruin and excellent Bizon (bee-zhon), but then something funny happened. This is a very local's local sort of cafe, but immaculate and a perfect time capsule of decades gone by.

The elderly bartender spoke no English, I managed with the little Dutch that I knew, and luckily one of the regulars knew some English. There was another regular that spoke slurred Flemish to us and was visibly drunk. He kept pointing to our beers and giving the thumbs up. After he disappeared to the WC, the English-speaker goes "He's Cnudde". It turns out that was the brewer, and drunk at noon. He also wanted to give us a tour of the brewery, which we took him up on.

Weird is an understatement, the phrase beautiful decay comes to mind. Cnudde only brews 4 times a year, when their beer stock is low. The brewery celebrates it's 100th anniversary later this year, and looks like it hasn't changed since 1919. Everything about it is ancient. There's a cellar room with soured vintage beer is blended in small amounts, which we were lucky enough to sample. They had a balsamic dark cherry taste, and fairly acetic, reminiscent of flat, acetic, unfiltered La Folie. We communicated in drunken broken English and Dutch and got by. Oh, and the brewery's water pipes run under the old church cemetery across the street, and the locals refer to their beer as "graveyard juice".

Probably the most surreal experience we had while in Belgium. If nothing else, pop in to meet the locals and have a Bizon.
