Making a serious estimate, I'd say there are at least 150 bodega-sized liquor stores in Baltimore. Nearly all of them are stabby. You go there to buy a 40 and loudly watch that creepy animated horseracing game our bloodsucking state government lets the lottery do. They are, in short, not entirely pleasant places, sometimes very literally dangerous, and even if they happen to stock a few random sixers of local craft they are all but certain to be stale.

From the outside, Amendment 21 doesn't do all that much to distinguish itself from a run of the mill bodega liquor store. Its neighborhood isn't dirty or dangerous or anything, but you know, you see it and you don't think it's gonna be a beer store. That's unfortunate, because I lived by it for well over a year before I popped in, and wow, it kick ass.

The beer selection isn't the largest in the area, of course. Total Wine and Wine Source each have broader selections. But even in this relatively small store, their refrigerated section is at least as large as Wine Source's, and easily tops that of Total Wine. They honestly, genuinely take good care of the beer.

The selection leans local and is very well-curated. They were the only store in town to get Kulmbacher Eisbock, for example, and they tend to get the really good, under the radar local stuff before the big shops do. They also host reps for tastings a few times a month. The also have really excellent selections of wine and liquor.

Overall, you're not doing to find much better in a neighborhood bottle shop. The selection goes toe-to-toe with the big stores, and it's worth coming up here if only to support a local business.
