3rd Birmingham pub of 18th September 2012 mini-crawl: The Barton Arms.

After a pint of Oakhams JHB I thought I’d have a change of direction and had a half-pint of this fine Weizen: it was poured into a small Krombacher Weizen glass and looked a picture. I enjoyed it just as much as I did its bottled version back in 2008.

Orange and misty look to it: strong aromas of vanilla, bananas and semi-sour citrus fruits.

Tasted just right; everything you’d expect in a good quality Weizen, but with a little bit extra thrown in. Flavoursome and perfectly balanced between tart bitterness and fruity refreshment.

A: Pour is murky, light orange with a rich large creamy head that takes it's time to dissipate. Lots of lacings.

S: Ripe banana - wheat. Spicey. Faint malt and lots of citric notes. Some yeast as well.

T: Banana once more, a little held back in comparison to the taste. Bready sweet malt. Citric notes and yeast. lots of spices.

M: Aftertaste stays longer than I anticipated and holds some dryness. Body is light to medium and carbonation isn't offensivly rich.

D: A refreshing Hefeweizen that holds a little more breadyness than usually - not bad at all.

Pours a cloudy bright orangish yellow color with white head. Bananas and cloves with some wheat on the nose; follows onto the palate. Medium bodied. Finishes with banana and clove with some hefe sweetness.

A slightly older bottle, looks like a little over a year.
Kind if dark gold pour, half finger of white head.

Aroma, grainy wheat, light clove and ginger.

Taste, caramel, grainy malt. Just faint clove and banana, only accenting unlike so many American versions. Good straight forward version of the style.

Lighter side body wise, but coats pretty well. There is a slight stickyness to it. Drank easy after a day of yard work.

A decent Bavarian Weizen. Has the traditional aroma and for the most part the flavors although with the texture being a bit soft, the flavor's affected by that too.

Comes out of the tap a hazy honey-golden with a thick, pale honey head. Rich, nose-filling wheaty aroma has a firm citrus undertone that is sweet and mainly lemon. Rich, wheaty flavor has yeasty and sweet lemon tones and hints of orange and grass. Lively, fizzy, full-bodied texture completes one of the best wheat beers I have ever enjoyed.

Krombacher Weizen has a thick, creamy, cream-colored head and a bubbly, very cloudy, yellow-orange appearance, with some good lacing left behind on the glass. The aroma is of white wheat bread, some coriander, and a faint citrus. Taste is of light lemon, white wheat bread, a touch of coriander, and the faintest banana undertone. Bitterness is low. Mouthfeel is medium, and Krombacher Weizen finishes refreshing, dry, and easy drinking. This is a good beer.

Pleasant, refreshing and very good rendition of the style, particularly its yeast and fruitiness which is so hard to imitate. As Krombacher's rendition warmed, I enjoyed even more how the sweet malt, fruity yeast and spicing played nice with one another. A good, but not great, hefeweizen.

Reviewed in Roger Protz' "300 More Beers To Try Before You Die", the sequel to his CAMRA classic, it told the interesting story of how this Bavarian wheat style came to be made and promoted in Germany's industrial north.

Found this at Bert's Bierhuis in Utrecht.

From a bottle into a weizen glass.

APPEARANCE: Pours a massive 4 finger white medium thick fluffy head that mounds out of the glass like a mountain. A decent amount of carbonation is evident with tiny little bubbles. Quite a few floaties unfortunately. Colour is tangerine orange with some amber at the bottom. Head is pretty persistent and a thick cap remains to the end leaving some decent lacing down the glass. Very nice looking.

SMELL: A decently strong scent of wheat malt, bananas and bubble gum. A bit of clove in there as well. Pleasant.

TASTE: Wheat malt, some clove with banana undertones, but slightly lacking on the initial taste. A mild and short wheat malt aftertaste has a slight bit of spiciness from the alcohol. A little disappointing, as it doesn't quite live up to the nose. Not off putting at all, but no better than average.

PALATE: Medium body and lower end carbonation. Goes down smooth with no bite and finishes very dry on the palate, perhaps a bit too astringent.

OVERALL: This one was an odd one. I had no expectations beforehand, as I didn't even know Krombacher made a weizen. The beginning was a pleasant surprise, but once I took my first sip that enthusiasm turned to disappointment as it turned into an average weizen at best. Great to look at and drinkable enough, but not worth seeking out again.

A 500ml bottle with a BB of Aug 2013. Picked up recently from a B&M store - cheap due to being short-dated.

Poured into a tulip pint glass. Bottle conditioned. A very hazy, translucent orange-amber hue with copious carbonation. Produces a vast head of creamy white foam that resembles meringue; this slowly reduces to a thick surface layer. Aroma of bright, fruity yeast esters with notes of banana, orange, bubblegum, clove, mild spice, wheat and earthiness. There is a faint metallic twang in the background.

Tastes of fruity yeast esters with a dry, lingering finish. Notes of banana, clove, bubblegum, orange, faint pepper, spice, wheat, stewed hops and earthy yeast. Highly attenuated and lightly acidic; reminiscent of sparkling water. There is a hint of harsh cardboard in the background, followed by a mild bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, tingly and dry, with well-judged carbonation and good body. Somewhat astringent, accompanied by an aftertaste of banana, fruity yeast esters and earthiness.

Pretty good - not quite a Wiehenstephaner but this weizen possesses an appropriate depth of character. It looks great; cloudy and effervescent. The aroma and flavour are suitably yeasty, with plenty of banana and fruity esters making themselves known. Faintly harsh, though this doesn't detract much from the experience. Good body for the style. A decent, well-crafted weissbier that is worthy of your time should you come across it.

500ml bottle bought from GapWines, Belfast...

Poured a light amber / yellow colour with a good yeasty haze... White head poured typically thick and foamy then faded slowly to decent thickish covering ... lots of carbonation rises to the surface... fair amount of sticky lacing...

Aroma - Very light clove spiciness, good wheatiness, some breadiness, very little malts - just some faint biscuity hints, sweet banana, light fruitiness (apples and lemons), some peppery traces, hay traces...

Taste - Very light biscuit malts, faint clove, quite strong wheat malt notes, quite yeasty, definite breadiness, some soap, metallic hints, nice fruitiness (lots of lemon and banana), light sour notes, peppery hints...

Feel - Fairly smooth with a little bite underneath... light body... As with most hefe's this is pretty refreshing and drinkable...

Overall - A pretty standard, though decent, hefe... certainly worth a try...
