Served from tap in a tall pokal at Firkin.

How have I not tried this stuff before? Rectifying that, it pours a deep midnight smoked sienna (nearly black, frankly) topped by a finger of sandstone foam. The nose comprises mild maple syrup, roasted malts, and a hint of greenery. The taste brings in more of the same, along with some grass and a twinge of cola near the finish. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a crisp-ish finish. Overall, a pretty nice schwarz. 'Nuff said.

Poured from a brown 11.2 oz. bottle. Has a black color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of malts, molasses. Taste is malts, sweet, somewhat like the non alcoholic malta drink. Feels light in the mouth and overall is an interesting take on this style, and a good beer.

A - Deep flat brown, with generous beige head.

S - Roasted malts, chocolate, charcoal and coffee.

T - Coffee and dark chocolate with some bitterness in the finish. Inviting taste.

M - Medium bodied. A touch too much carbonation for my liking.

D - I keep going back for more. Carbonation seems overpowering below 10 deg celcius.

Served in a Krombacher tulip glass.

A - Poured dark brown with 2 fingers of off white head. Some light cane through around the edges of the glass but otherwise opaque.

S - Light nose. Some dark roasted malts with a slight bitterness evident.

T - Roasted malts, chocolate and a prominent hop bitterness. There is also a decent sweetness that takes on caramel and mollases flavours at times.

M - Light to medium body. Moderate carbonation.

Pours a dark brown tinged black color. Opaque and shiny. Thin weak off-white head dissipates steadily leaving a just a thin partial layer of velvety foam on top of the beer.

Aroma is pretty mild with some light cocoa notes, roasted malts, and general grainy malts with a hint of spiciness.

Taste follows the nose with some bready malts, a hint of rye bread with a tinge of spicy pepper, light smooth cocoa notes come through in the middle. Touch of hops on the back end provide a nice earthiness. Hint of honey like sweetness is noted as the beer warms.

Feel is light, smooth, and drinkable.

Overall this is a surprisingly really nice schwarzbier - sure its not the best example - but its well done.

Bottled 2/5/13. Best before 2/5/14.

Pours an almost opaque super dark brown with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small streaks of beer form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is mainly of malt and caramel-like aromas. Taste is much the same with dark roasted malt and burnt toast flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is an pretty good beer that is easy to drink but the flavors are better on the aftertaste than at first sip.

Poured chilled in hotel glass in Sofia, Bulgaria hotel. Beer follows Germany's purity laws.

A: solid black, thin head
S: plum, chocolate, fig; very sweet and delicate smell
T: coffee, roasted grains, sweet; hops are subdued; light ABV makes this easy to drink

A pretty good, decent beer.

12oz Bottle from Brouehaha QC for 2.50$

Appearance - Dark brown colour with an average size fizzy beige coloured head. It's hard to make out the level of carbonation and there is some fair lacing. The head lasted for around 4 minutes.

Smell - Malts, chocolate, grains, metallic

Taste & Mouth - There is an above average amount of carbonation and I can taste malts and a hint of chocolate/coffee. There is also some corn/grains and some metallic notes. It ends with a grainy and lightly malted aftertaste with a bit of lingering bitterness.

Overall - It smells better than it tastes unfortunately. Still a pretty decent beer but not something I would pick up again. It's just a tad too boring. I can see how this would be a session beer however; especially given the ABV.

Appearance-Almost opaque dark brown to black with a tan foam.

Smell-Coffee. Earth. Earth that was just rained on and turned into mud.

Taste-Honey and brown sugar. The coffee has almost entirely disappeared. Strange sweetness.

Mouthfeel-Medium bodied, not overly heavy for a black beer which I like a lot.

Overall-Not bad. Easy drinking for something so dark. Clean even though the sweetness on the palate may be a little overpowering.
