Pours a dark brown tinged black color. Opaque and shiny. Thin weak off-white head dissipates steadily leaving a just a thin partial layer of velvety foam on top of the beer.

Aroma is pretty mild with some light cocoa notes, roasted malts, and general grainy malts with a hint of spiciness.

Taste follows the nose with some bready malts, a hint of rye bread with a tinge of spicy pepper, light smooth cocoa notes come through in the middle. Touch of hops on the back end provide a nice earthiness. Hint of honey like sweetness is noted as the beer warms.

Feel is light, smooth, and drinkable.

Overall this is a surprisingly really nice schwarzbier - sure its not the best example - but its well done.

Decanted from an 11.2 oz (330 ml) bottle into a custom taster pint; produced Jun 25, 2018, best by Jun 25, 2019.
A: Pours a crystal clear, black color with mahogany highlights, a one to two finger, foamy, wheat colored head, solid retention and lacing.
S: Aromas of caramel, toast, sweetened coffee, cocoa, and white pepper.
T: Semidry. Flavors follow the nose with an emphasis caramel and lightly sweetened coffee. Solid peppery bitterness balances sweetness nicely. Bitter aftertaste.
M: Light to medium bodied with moderate carbonation.
O: A very dry example of a German Schwarzbier. Solidly made, eminently drinkable, and very enjoyable. Stood up extremely well to Sloppy Joes.

A 12oz. bottle poured into a pint glass. A full two fingers of beautiful brown foam that after a minute settles to a half inch. This is a very dark brown, I am unable to see into the glass.
The aroma seems to be the sweet malts, very faint.
The roasted mats are sweet, giving away to a very slight dry and a bit bitter at the end.
The feel is some carbonation on the tongue, not creamy but more than a light feel.
This beer is easy for me to drink, it is not nearly as heavy as many dark beers.I like the roasted flavor.

Having this on-tap at the Sachsenheim. Served to me in a tall, slender mug, this beer draws a very dark brown color that does seem interested in letting in any light. Has a fairly tan colored, fluffy looking head that’s about an inch thick when first drawn and served. Settles to a thick ring lining the inside of the glass along with a nice surface coating of foam and good lacing. Big roasted caramel and bready malt aromas and not much else smell wise. And that’s okay. The taste is pretty much exactly the same, with lots of roasted, bready and caramel malt sweetness along with what I think is some wheat. Not really any discernible hops. Has a fairly crisp, yet smooth, medium to full bodied mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. Easy to drink. Has a mostily clean, slightly grainy finish. Spot on for the style. A pretty good beer here.

The nose brings roasted grains. Almost spicy. The taste comes in with some of the same. It’s slightly roasty, not sweet with grains and malt. Crisp and refreshing. It’s not too thick and still keeps a lager style body to it. It could bring a little more flavor in my opinion.

Pours a 3 finger head into a pint glass. Smell is pretty nonexistent and taste is subdued. Almost creamy and coffee seems to be in there somewhere. Very smooth and enjoyable.

330mL bottled 4/19/18 bb 4/19/19 poured into a becher glass at fridge temp 4.7% ABV. The beer pours bright very dark brown with chocolate tan colored head. The head recedes to a fine coat and leaves a bit of lacing. The aroma is mild with just a little roasted malt. The taste is mild as well with a touch of roasted malt up front sliding into a nuetral finish. Mouthfeel is thin bodied, adequately carbonated and dry in the finish. Overall, good. Low flavor black lager, but no brewing defects or off tastes or smells. This would be fine for a night with friends or with food.

16oz draft poured into a tall stange shows dark as night black and briefly floats a tight bubbled 1/4in cap.

Aroma is a melange of metal and roast malt and the flavor matches.

Mouthfeel is oily, just short of creamy, and finishes clean.

Overall a nice non-coffee roast dark.

Pours a very dark brown color with a wispy off white head.

The aroma has mild roast notes with a slight metallic scent. Dusty.

The taste has a doughy malt flavor with an ever so slight roast note. Touch of grass.

The feel is light with fizzy carbonation. Mainly sweet on the palate with a light bitter finish.

Beer drinks easy and has an authentic German flavor however not picking up enough roast notes for a schwarzbier.

This is one of my go to beers when I find it during beer hunts. Overall a solid beer. The color is a clear, dark brown with a one finger tan head. I like the retention and decent lacing with this beer. The nose is sweet malt, roasted malt, syrup, and toast. On the finish, some elements of caramel come through. The feel is crisp with medium carbonation. An easy to drink dark beer. Schwarzbieresque? I'd say so. Overall a decent drinkable dark.

Krombacher Dark pours a solid black color with a thin ring and modest film. Decent retention.
It has aromas of chocolate and lightly roasted malt.
In the taste there is a modest bitterness that comes from the lightly roasted malts and hops. The dark bread malts are the centerpiece.
A medium bodied to light drinking beer that is fairly clean and uncomplicated. A decent balance.
I suppose this is a good beer if you are looking for a lighter drinking dark beer with a clean lager taste.

Very dark red, beautiful creamy head.
A light toasted malt in the smell, light coffee. All very clean.
Again light toasted malt n the taste, a herbal note, and some bitter root, stronger in the aftertaste.
Light chocolately finish.
Clean but non anonymous beer, easily drinkable.

Aroma is nice - roast, malt, bit of coffee and cocoa. Flavor's fairly balanced between bitter, sweet, tart and similar to nose. Body is a bit thin. Nice finish.

An 11.2 ounce Euro bottle poured into a shaker pint glass.

Appearance - A dark ruby-red color (almost black). The head disappates quickly. Zero lacing.

Smell - Toasted malt nose.

Taste - A sweet molasses flavor. Mildly toasty. A bit of a herbal taste. Minimal hop presences.

Mouth - Slick. Smooth.

Overall - A really like Schwarzbier. This is a good one but not a great on. The flavor is a bit thin. There is a slight metallic taste. Also, the complete lack of head/lacing is a little upsetting. If you have a choice, order the Kostritzer.

Pours a clear, dark brown. One inch head of an off-tan color. Great retention and decent lacing. Smells of sweet malt, roasted malt, slight yeast, slight burnt toast, and a hint of syrup. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of sweet malt, slight caramel malt, hint of roasted malt, hint of wheat, hint of adjunct, and burnt toast. Overall, good appearance, but weak body and aroma, the burnt toast aroma and flavor is unpleasant.

my taste buds have certainly changed. if I had had this one a few years ago I believe it would have been one of my top german brews up there with the franziskaner, spaten, weihenstephaner, etc..... but still a great brew! I like it!

Served from tap in a tall pokal at Firkin.

How have I not tried this stuff before? Rectifying that, it pours a deep midnight smoked sienna (nearly black, frankly) topped by a finger of sandstone foam. The nose comprises mild maple syrup, roasted malts, and a hint of greenery. The taste brings in more of the same, along with some grass and a twinge of cola near the finish. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a crisp-ish finish. Overall, a pretty nice schwarz. 'Nuff said.

Poured from a brown 11.2 oz. bottle. Has a black color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of malts, molasses. Taste is malts, sweet, somewhat like the non alcoholic malta drink. Feels light in the mouth and overall is an interesting take on this style, and a good beer.

Appearance: Holds a tan foam head that sticks to the side of the glass. Black body shows it is actually deep brown with excellent clarity.

Smell: Tonic water, black bread, dusty earthy with a hint of gingerbread sweetness.

Taste: Solid black bread note I associate with the style, a hint of metallic coin taste in with the tonic and earthy hop bitters. Flavor is nice but the volume is turned a little low; mild but enjoyable.

Feel: Medium carbonation gets a bit frothy with a slightly gritty chew.

Overall: Solid German craftsmanship, generally clean, to style, and enjoyable.

Appearance- Poured from 500 ml into nonic pint glass, bottle production date 27.11.13 best before 27.11.14 so this bottle was made 8 months ago. Pours almost black with one fingered tan head that quickly dissipates. Didn't leave any lacing.

Smell- Chocolate malt.

Taste- Roasted coffee malt which quickly gives way to hops, a bit short but clean.

Mouthfeel- A bit thin on the palate.

Overall- A decent session beer, refreshing but nothing special.

The beer comes in a dark brown, almost black.

The aroma is light roasted malt, metallic notes.

The flavor follows with a light porter-like roasted malt. Then onto a hint of German spicy hops. A decent amount of metallic flavor and lack of mid and back palate.

Appearance- Dark brown with an light brown, khaki foam.

Smell- Caramel, Coffee, Rotting Fruit.

Taste- Malty, burnt sugar and awkward sweetness.

Mouthfeel- Middle of the road, but good for a lower ABV brew. Level of carbonation is on target.

Overall- Flavorful and dark for a lower ABV beer but the flavor profile is weak and relies to heavily on a malty, burnt sweetness that doesn't work very well.

Appearance-Almost opaque dark brown to black with a tan foam.

Smell-Coffee. Earth. Earth that was just rained on and turned into mud.

Taste-Honey and brown sugar. The coffee has almost entirely disappeared. Strange sweetness.

Mouthfeel-Medium bodied, not overly heavy for a black beer which I like a lot.

Overall-Not bad. Easy drinking for something so dark. Clean even though the sweetness on the palate may be a little overpowering.
