Switchback Extra Pale AleSwitchback Extra Pale Ale

Brewed by:
Switchback Brewing Company
Vermont, United States | website

Style: American Pale Ale (APA)

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.80%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our Extra Pale Ale is a hop-forward pale ale that employs an abundant use of whole cone hops. We designed our Extra Pale Ale utilizing Vermont grown hops from the UVM Hop Extension Program. In this beer we have used Centennial, Chinook, and Cascade hops in their whole cone form, allowing us to selectively pull lively aromas from them through a brief steeping at the end of the boil as well as dry-hopping during cellaring. We use a malt bill that is tailored to complement and showcase the hops, which, when coupled with a gentle bitterness, make this beer all about the glorious aromas and flavors of these hops.

Big thanks to my friend Michelle's pop who extra'end me this beer when he did a goandpickitupformebro for some heady. Enjoyed from a lccb snifter.

a - brew pours a murky orange yellow with a finger of frothy hard that didn't hang out long. Spotty lace at best.

s - nose is that hoppy happiness of citric tropical fruit. Ripe orange and ripe tangerine. Dank.

t - as the nose suggests fairly dank hops. Really ripe oranges and nectarines. Very ripe fruit which makes it a bit IPA like but still damn fine.

m - medium bodied a bit chewy, rich.easy drinking.

o - overall a super delicious pale ale that I would be happy to have again and again.

Consumed 9/4/14

A: Mostly golden with and orange tinge some tangerine hues - lightly cloudy - pours with a medium-sized, white head, fades to a few wisps, leaves some streaks of lacing [3.75]

S: Nicely hoppy - tangerine and orange flesh, with some grapefruit - very floral, leafy hop cones, hints of pine, some dank aromas - not the strongest aroma, but it is pleasantly non-aggressive - pale malts with some caramel at the base, light grains - very bready with some light bread, crackers, and undercooked biscuits - some light sweetness [3.75]

T: Flavorful, hoppy citrus flavors well-balanced with the pale malts - ripe tangerine and grapefruit flesh - a touch of citrus zest, but it's mostly a fleshy, floral flavor - lightly leafy, too, with some resiny pine - non-aggressive, though, and very mildly bitter - pale grains and bready malts - lightly toasted bread - minimal sweetness [3.75]

M: Medium-light body, nice carbonation, finishes very clean [4]

O: Please can now plz [3.75]

I am consistently in favor of highly drinkable pale ales with a well-crafted hop profile. This is one of them. I think this is even easier to drink than Switchback Ale, which can basically be consumed like water. If this were readily available in a smaller format (sorry, bombers), I would definitely drink more.

Poured out of a 12 oz. "Stubby" bottle.
Unfiltered. I word I seriously love to see on the label of the beer I'm about to consume.
Hazy as a humid, late July day. Golden straw color. Moderate to thin white covering of lacy foam.
Aroma is big, tropical fruits mostly, slight spice mix , hop aromatic complexity is neat.
Feel is ponderous, long and heady, clean bite....so darn refreshing.
Flavor is much of the same, unique balance of flavors, herbal, wheat, yeast forward with clean malt in the back seat. In a unique way, this is right on stylewise.
Endlessly ponderous and fun.

From the 650 ml. bottle marked 15189. Sampled on July 27, 2015.

Unfiltered murky looking pale yellow with a long lasting white foamy head.

The aroma is quit a conglomerate of esters including toasted bread, corn, pine, floral, and grapefruit. The hops are present but more low profile.

Light to medium body.

The hop bitterness is more apparent in the taste after I get through the toasty malts. A little spice, florla, and pine.

This is a good attempt at a session IPA. Features an adequately hoppy citrus aroma and a taste that is nicely balanced between base malts and hop flavor/bitterness. Mouth feel is somewhat light, but that is to be expected for a session-style IPA. Overall, a pleasant surprise from Switchback.
