Believe it or not but there is a difference between Sol and Corona - albeit a small one - and Sol comes out on top. When I was in the Yucatan last year I spoke with a local guide who explained that most of the locals prefer Sol, while Corona is sold to the Americans. Having said all this, it is still a basic Mexican lager which is best served on a hot and humid day. Though I prefer mine with a lime I don't feel it's as much of a necessity as with Corona. Complex, dark and sophisticated? No. Cool, refreshing and drinkable? Yes.

It's in a clear bottle, so chances of it being any good are low.
I still poured it into a glass for easy drinking.
Looks like an average yellow cheap beer.
Smells... bad. I don't know what it smells like other than cheap.
Tastes pretty bad. Reminds me of Corona Extra, it tastes bad, but not so overly powerful that you can't finish one.
Feels okay, easy to drink if you can get past the taste.
Overall, if it didn't come in a variety pack I wouldn't be drinking it. This being my first of 3 that the pack came with, I will not be buying this one again on its own.

Wow, clear painted bottle. Looks terrible. Smells like corn syrup at best.

Taste is nonexistant. Like more stale Corona. Barely perceptible beer things like hops, malt and yeast. Really just a bunch of water. Boiled vegetables all over the flavor, mouthfeel, aroma etc. . .

Funny thing is, this stuff costs more than Sierra Nevada!

Second bottle from the "Cervezas de México" variety pack. Best-by date of September 2017, alongside a Julian bottling date of 6274, or 274th day of 2016.

Pours very pale yellow, a little darker once in the glass but still definitely on the paler end of things. It's perfectly clear and has a nice shine to it, along with an abundance of rising bubbles. Foam forms a thin white cap on the surface of the beer with a slightly thicker ring around the edge; seems that it wants to stick around for a while, as it hasn't shrunk any more since pouring. Leaves pretty nice rings of lacing behind as the beer is drank, too.

Smell is sweet corn, with a bit of funkiness that reminds me of corn husks or something along the lines of wet hay. As the beer sits and warms a slight metallic thing starts to develop; toward the end of the glass it is not "slight" anymore, unfortunately -- it starts to dominate the other smells. While it's not totally unpleasant, especially when cold, smell is definitely not this one's strong suit.

Taste is also corn-like, but much less sweet; there's a bit of a bitterness at the very beginning of each sip, and it's pretty dry overall, there's only a light pop of sweetness on the end that reminds me of what you get when you eat... well, corn. It's reminding me a bit of an unsalted tortilla chip, which was the impression I got the first time I had this one. There's a bit of a yeastiness to it as well, I'm noticing this more around halfway through the glass this time. Fortunately the metallic smell that arrives as the beer warms never transfers over to the flavor -- it's pretty consistent from beginning to end, at least when going from fridge-temperature to somewhat warmer than that over the course of 15-20 minutes.

Feel is pretty nice. Light and crisp and drinkable but not watery, feels noticeably more substantial than the "light" beers despite being in the same ABV range as them. That may be thanks partly to the carbonation, but whatever it is it works. It's definitely highly carbonated, but this comes across as a pleasant seltzer-y fizz rather than an uncomfortable prickliness.

Overall, not a bad little beer as AALs go, funky metallic smell aside. It's only 4.2% ABV according to this bottle (the site says 4.5%, maybe the beer has changed or maybe just batch variance?), but it's much more interesting and flavorful than the American "light/lite" beers in that ABV range -- I'd say it's more comparable to the standard AALs than the "light" bunch, despite having alcohol in the "light" range. I've been pleasantly surprised by these Mexican beers -- it's making me want to re-review the American examples of the style without the "lighter flavors = lower taste score" bias that I had in my earlier days of reviewing.

Appearance – Yellow body with a tinge of orange. No cabeza on this cervesa.

Smell – The only scent I can pick up from the glass is creamed corn in a can.

Taste – Caramba! This can’t be good. It tastes like someone rolled a skunk in corn batter and somehow crammed the poor little guy into a bottle. There’s some sweetness in there, but I think that’s just my gums bleeding.

Mouthfeel – There’s some faint Alka-seltzer type of carbonation in there, but otherwise it’s pretty dead.

Drinkability – Forget the lime, you’re gonna have to plop a watermelon in the glass to cover up this taste.

Comments – This is one bad beer. The Sol has set.

Not sure why I'm having this one, I already have a feeling I know what the outcome will be. The clear bottle shows the pale straw color right away, may be just one golden shade darker than a Corona. Poured into a glass, the head is the fizziest, whitest cap I've seen and it disappears in record time. The nose... well, where the hell is it? Most adjunct lagers have virtually no notable aroma to them and this one follows suit closely. Some mild corns, grains, metallic tinges, and some skunky, sulfuric smells. Not very pleasing, and not much of anything at all. Again, the taste is more of the same - lots of carbonation snap for a crisp taste, but there really isn't much of a taste. Dry grains, corn, and while the bitterness is low, it enters in a very astringent manner. No actual floral or hop flavor aside from that slight bitter bite. Just a touch more flavor than a Corona, I'd say. But now we're splitting hairs. Thin body, dry finish, heavily carbonated.

Eh, a slight step up from Corona, but we're talking very slight. In the future I'd probably pass this up for a water, it's just not really worth it.

12onz clear bottle

Appearance: pale yellow color with some white bubbles on top.

Smell : corn and veggies

Taste : There's a lot of corn in this one, veggies, grains ,there's no notable present of hops.

Mouthfeel & Drinkability : Very dry beer, you would look for some water around after having a couple, cheap beer and really average.

12 oz clear glass long neck bottle with a silk-screened label with no freshness date. Pale yellow colour, very clear. The white lace sticks and stays a bit but not long enough.

Big corn grit aroma with faint fusel alcohols.

Big bitty mouth feel from a flat out dominant corn grit and grain husk flavour. Hop bitterness rides this and actually intensifies it in the middle for an astringently bittern flavour. Dry and grainy finish.

Just like Corona, needs a lime … any beer that needs a lime is not worth drinking.A sub-premium lager.
