"Estilo Bock" 2010 edition

This beer was thrown into the communal ice bucket during New Years, where it lingered & subsequently became property of the operator of the establishment... me. :D

A sticky glob of parchment-colored Cool Whip floats a top my Ommegang Anniversary glass. Clear antique maple wood stain, with a rich deep orange hue. Erratic misshapened lace blots the glass.

Smells big of malted cereal, brown sugar, & grain alcohol. Oxidized potatoes, leather, & sticky beer residue make up smaller nuances.

Glassy texture. Metallic charr, with caramel notes. Bland grain. Beef broth?! Newspaper. This bottle is CostCo fresh, but tastes old. Thin. Carbonation is lively. The finish is subtly sweet with some yet to be determined starch(boiled corn husks?).

I could maybe swallow this better with some Ritz crackers & some of those ugly gift basket cheese spreads I've been gifted over the holidays. But then I wouldn't have any ammo left to pass off to unwanted guests.

Vintage 2011 which means this awful beer has been made for many years and I have no idea why that is.

Look: Dark amber color with 1/4 inch head and no retention

Smell: Smells the same as every other Mexican beer. Awful

Taste: This one has a bit of caramel that disguises the dirty mexican water taste but its still bad

Mouthfeel: Thin and lightly carbonated

Overall: Yet another bad beer that the mass populous love

12 ounce bottle poured into Efes tulip. 2011 vintage. Pour seems quite still. Zero lacing. Aroma is sweet caramel crossed with overripe banana. Mouthfeel is thin and taste is not offensive but really nothing exciting. Reminds me of a stale Yuengling more than a bock. Like a flat amber instead of a bock. Easy to drink, just not enjoyable.

2011 bottle.

A: Poured into a beer mug. Very clear dark coppery amber, not a lot of head, little retention and no lacing.

S: Slightly metallic, a bit of grain and burnt sugar. Smells weak but like a bock.

T: Mildly sweet caramel and burnt sugar, dry corn and grain, metallic aftertaste and just a hint of esters.

M: Thin and watery, thin carbonation. Bitter (but not from hops) finish, fairly dry.

O: Drinkable when icy cold, but really not a very good beer. It doesn't seem much different than Dos Equis Amber.

Rich and clean Mexican beer smell.

Beautiful red orange appearance

It went downhill with the taste. It's as devoid of substance as a keystone.

The mouthfeel is bubbly, like champaign. It feels artificially carbonated. If you like bubbly water, you might like this.

Speaking of bubbly water, it tastes watered down.

I found myself just waiting for this beerish drink to be over.

Received this as a gift from BA Borrachito at the Strong Ale Festival at the Carlsbad Pizza Port on 6 December. Really wasn't sure what this beer would turn out like. Turned out it was quite unremarkable.
This Mexican brew had a clear ochre color and a fairly good-sized bubbly off-white head. The head quickly shrank down to a skim despite the lively carbonation. The smell was a blend of earthy malts and some corn syrup with a rather unappealing lightly sulphurous aroma. The taste was a listless mix of caramel and grainy malt flavors with a vague hops bite in the finish. The feel was thin and watery.
This beer really isn't much to get excited about. It's basically a boring, not-quite-average dark lager.

Pours out clear dark brown with red hues when held to the light. Head is nice, thick, and with decent retention. Not too much lacing on this one. The nose is grainy with a mix of citrus and floral hops and solid malt backbone. Extremely light on flavor. A little bit of grains and a little bit of metal. Hops are almost nonexistent and the malts have vanished. Mouth feel is watery at best with hints of carbonation. This beer went downhill fast. Never will I buy this again.

bottle courtesy of fly. Thanks!
Pours a clear maroon color with a medium sized beige head. Smell is toasty caramel like malt. Taste is nutty and toasty flavored malt with a hint of bitterness. Medium bodied and pretty decent actually for what I expected. Flavor ist still on the thin side, but not bad.

2008 edition 12oz bottle
Clear chestnut amber or light brown color, hardly a thing ring of head.

Smells like a Dos XX amber. kinda skunky, bit of sweet bready malt, but mostly carbonic lager smell.

Taste is pretty lacking. A lot less taste than even the smell suggests. I'm guessing its the heavy carbonation that masks everything.taste is not sweet, just kinda weird. The g/f says it smells/tastes like vomit, but I don't think its quite that bad.

Heavy stinging carbonation, like sparkling water or soda feel.

On the scale of beer in general this beer ranks pretty low, but it's not that far from my expectations.

I think this is just an adjunct lager with a little caramel coloring. If this is rated as a bock, it's pretty much at the bottom of the barrel. Back in the 1970s, we used to be happy to see this stuff around the holidays. It was dark, which made it special. But I also think that back in the day Noche Buena had a sweeter, slightly richer caramel taste.

This just tastes faintly of caramel malt and surprisingly bitter. Maybe with the price of hops the less-particular of the industrial brewers are using some rock bottom variety that gives a little bitter zing without breaking the budget.

The mouthfeel is quite spritzy and tastes like club soda. Dark amber color in the glass. The typical wet cardboard smell. From the bottle into a plastic cup at the neighborhood street celebration. At least I still have my memories.
