Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine Issue #48 (Jan 2011):

While definitely not a common style to be imported into the US, it's one that is admired by both consum- ers and brewers alike. Slightly yeast-hazed golden hue; the draping of white lace on the glass is an amaz- ing sight. Faint peppery notes, with grape skin, fresh-cut grass and bready nose. Refreshing with its snappy crispness, smoothness ensues in the back of the lighter body. Fresh dry grain and light, nutty yeast meld quite well together. Hops hone in for balance and give off a light herbal freshness. Finishes very dry with a clean grain-and-yeast aftertaste.

from a bottle to a tulip
look; slightly cloudy pale golden, 1 1/4" tight white head with good retention and lacing
smell; biscuit, yeast, noble hops, malt, diacetyl, maybe more diacetyl than i like
taste; like nose, add honey, very nice but again more diacetyl than i like, very slightly bitter, lemony finish
feel; very nice, medium light with mild-moderate carbonation, well balanced but lively
overall; very enjoyable to drink, all the elements of a zwickl with a hint of summer hefeweizen

I have had several times since last review and the diacetyl is reduced and malt and hops flavor and nose increase when beer isn't overchilled as i now believe the first one was

330 ml bottle, just purchased but (now I see) some months past the BB date on the label of 8/2015. Served in a lager glass. It’s past date but certainly not bad and had retained plenty of carbonation. Pours hazy golden with a tall, fluffy white head that has excellent retention. A bit of sediment-laden liquid left in the bottle.

Aroma: more hops than malts, with a earthy and slightly skunky Euro hop aromas dominating.

Flavor: mild mix of light baked bread and light hops.

Overall: promising but likely past prime; will revisit with a fresh sample if I get the chance -- meanwhile, I’ve made a very slight compensation for this in the ratings.

Arcobräu Gräfliches Brauhaus "Arcobräu Zwickl Lager"
on tap at The German Society of Pennsylvania Bierfest 2018 courtesy of Brauhaus Schmitz, Philadelphia, PA

Notes: Typical appearance with a very hazy golden body beneath a short head of frothy white foam. Both the head retention and the lacing are good to very good. Both the flavor and the aroma are similar with floral and mildly herbal hops intertwined within a lightly grainy and mildly sweetish pilsner malt base. A firm bitterness balances it but never steps forward. It's a very soft beer in that sense, and that carries over into the mouth feel as well as it's medium to medium-light in body and smooth with a moderate, fine-bubbled carbonation. Quite nice.

Pours a hazy pale straw color with a small wispy white head that settled into a light ring.

The aroma is of doughy/bready munich malt. There is a bit of a metallic note. Some grassy noble hops round out the aroma. Typical German aroma.

The flavor is of a sweet bready malt. It has an almost honey sweetness though none was added. There is a nice grassy hop flavor that goes perfectly with this brew. Simple flavors but everything works.

As per the style, the body is quite substantial. This is offset by a very fizzy carbonation, which is a bit too strong. The beer is sweet on the palate but is offset by the grassy hops. This drinks very well.

Not light in body but simple in flavor. It is quite a refreshing beer. Enjoyable.

Served on tap at the Little Pub in ridgefield, CT. Served in signature zwicki glass.

Pours a cloudy golden yellow. Opaque. Thick creamy white foam that persists at the top of the glass.

Not much nose. Taste is a relatively clean, yet flavorful and creamily smooth lager long finish. Some hop is noticed. But prevailing lighter flavor.

Interesting style creates a very easy drinking lager. Nice taste.

Poured from a brown 11.2 oz. bottle. Has a cloudy light golden color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is sweet, malty. Taste is crisp, malts and grains, lightly hopped, very dry at the finish. Good but not overpowering flavor. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a pretty good beer.

A: Honey-gold pour with a low rate of haze, and a medium rise of effervesce. On top lies a chalk white, creamy head that was moderately lasting leaving a minimal lace behind.

S: Low hop profile, a touch of dry honey suckles, bread, and a light musky lemon twang.

T: The flavor is sharp and pronounced, a lemony twang with a german pilsner malting. Grainy, spicy hops with a bright tangerine zing with a follow of light muskiness Bright and crisp with a good hop zing, soft herbal flowers and some applejuice. Clean flavor, sharp and tasty.

M: Crisp carbonation factor, light bodied, with a light tart lemony warmth.

O: Overall crsip, with a bright hop zing, easy drinking, nice german malting and good example.

Poured on tap at Churchkey DC into a 14oz. Pokal glass.

Very light lemon hued, with light amber brown middle body. A very white one finger head is produced that slowly falls with a creamy character. Real nice lacing also, very sexy looking.

Bouquet is a nice light malt, but also a strong doughy airy bread. Slight sense of muted crispness.

A very soft mild palate and finish. Slight crisp, is and super chewy soft doughy malt with lots of density. Almost like drinking raw wet dough.

Overall though pretty tasty and a dense dough blast that comes off as refreshing.

On tap at Brauhaus Schmitz in Philadelphia, PA.

This one pours a slightly hazy golden yellow, with a small head, and lots of lacing.

This smells quite floral, with some bitter grassiness, doughy yeast, mineral water, and pilsner malt.

This is really well done. It's well balanced between the slightly bitter grassy and fresh cut flower hop flavor, with a slightly fruity and crisp malt finish. There's also a slight mineral flavor to this, too.

This is crisp and clean, and very light bodied, with a very high level of drinkability. I could hoist many steins of this stuff.

This is slowly becoming one of my favorite styles, and it's always nice to try a fresh German rendition.

@ Busy Bee

Cloudy pale yellow under a fluffy white head. Pale fruity, malt sweet aroma...bready yeast, honey, and soft noble hops. Nice pale malt base with a solid floral hoppiness on top. Sweet, somewhat peppery flavor and some honey and grape. Fresh and light, fairly crisp yet soft. Good, refreshingly clean lager.
