Hazy golden colour with 1cm white head which quickly dissolves to leave a thin film.

Medium carbonation.

This beer is very very mild almost weak in nature, quite a thin mouthfeel.

Nice beer.

Highly drinkable, you could guzzle this stuff down on a hot day.

I have a disagreement with many of the existing reviews for this beer. Many reviewers mention a hint of tropical fruit on the nose but I was distressingly overwhelmed by a huge, perfumey, floral aroma of tropical fruits. This is normally a show-stopper for me but this beer is genuinely good. The overall experience is great but the mouthfeel is exceptional. I highly recommend giving it a full try.
I enjoyed this on draft in a standard American pint glass. I had a bottled version later and found it almost as enjoyable, with a very good but less superlative mouthfeel.

This beer poured an expected nice golden color and the smell had some hints of piney hops. The taste gave way to a quick taste of those piney hops however the after taste was weak and almost flavorless.

After the surprisingly able Hanalei Island IPA (though not really an IPA is it now?), I’m looking forward to seeing/tasting what Big Wave can do. That said: Golden Ale, cold(en) weather, not the best mix, also my nose is a bit out of sorts due to a surgeon scooping a chunk of cancer out of it and stitching in a skin graft... it’s pretty horror show, and it means I’m a nostril down on my olfactory senses - so don’t expect much description in the aroma section. Also don’t expect mere facial surgery to slow me down, nothing slows me down, expect maybe a swimming pool filled with molasses... of course you would have to trick me into diving in first, no easy feat. Oh yeah, thanks go out to the Kona rep (a lovely Kiwi lady whose name escapes me) for this free sample.

Poured from a 355ml bottle into a nonic pint.

A: Pretty much as advertised: Hazed golden body with a white cappuccino foam head that drops back from 1 centimetre to a light lace blanket. Looks like a refreshing brew, dammit - it’s too cold for a refreshing beer [checks thermometer] 16 degrees. Well, I guess I’m a Queenslander now - complaining about non-existent cold weather. 7/10.

S: Honey biscuits, like those Greek desserts, mmmm... [FOCUS DOC!] hint of floral hops and a light touch of dark Caribbean rum as well. Overall aroma is definitely skewed towards the malt, pretty standard with a Golden Ale really. 7/10.

T: Yep, honey biscuits, bit of a lemon note on the hop side - less floral than noted above. Flavour is on the weak side, expected with the 4.4% ABV, however this is one beer that could definitely benefit from a boost in flavour. Finish is dry with a mild citric bitterness. 7/10.

M: Mid to light, a bit watery, with a light carbonation - works for the style: Light and refreshing summer beer - but more body wouldn’t go astray either. 6/10.

D: I see what Kona are going for with this brew, the Hanalei Island, and I’m guessing more of the same from their Lager (which is the last of the samples I have to review). Great to have a light, easy drinking beer when it’s bloody hot outside, for now though brews like this make me feel like a nice BIG Russian Imperial Stout, or a Quadrupel. However let us not digress: Kona Big Wave is an entirely drinkable hot weather brew, though I personally like the flavour profile of the Hanalei Island better. 7/10.

Food match: Bring on the luau!

This is my go-to beer. I like it for its tropical fruit aroma, great flavor, and overall lightness (low carbs and calories) when compared to other beers of the same type. I usually buy it by the 12 pack for home, but several locations in Hawaii also have it on tap.

Poured from a 12oz stubber bottle into a big Pokal glass

Has a golden, slightly hazy color with a moderate white head that dissipates in 30 seconds or so

Nose is citrusy and slightly floral with a little bit of hop and malt. Balanced but not particularly intense.

Feel is moderate with a fine carbonation that you feel directly on the middle of your tongue. Not heavy, but not watery by any means

Taste is an even mix of mild hoppiness and maltiness, with a noticeable but not overwhelming citrus and floral flavor that truly gives the beer a unique character, especially in its price and availability range.

Personally very partial to this brew as a go-to when I'd want something lighter than a Bell's Two Hearted Ale which is another favorite. Definitely a session-able beer that will please most folks.

12 oz bottle in Idaho.
Look: golden amber body with excellent clarity and a white head with good retention.
Typical light ale feel.
Mild flavor with a bolder aroma that suggests more hops.

Kona Brewing Company Big Wave Golden Ale
Live review. Poured from stubby 12 oz. bottle that I bought as a “mix sixer” from Giant Eagle in Madison, Ohio about a month ago into a clean, clear glass. “Mix sixer“ was $10.99. Date stamped on the label says NOV 06 16 so it should be alright even though it is past due. Disclaimer: This has not been one of my favorite styles in the past.

A: Pretty basic translucent yellow (golden) body under a one half inch white head. 3.0

S: Relatively little smell. Some light malt and hops notes. Just fine for the style. 3.0

T: Taste flows directly from the smell. Very basic "blonde ale" taste of light malt and hops. 3.0

M: Feel is moderately chunky for the style, a feature that I like. Dissipates pretty quickly after swallowing though. 4.0

D/O: Drinkability is very high indeed (I could have many of these) and overall it is "as advertised." It is a reasonable, quaffable American Blonde Ale.
