Big Wave is light golden ale with a subtle fruitiness and delicate hop aroma. A smooth, easy drinking refreshing ale. The lightly roasted honey malt contributes to the golden hue of this beer and also gives a slight sweetness that is balanced out by our special blend of hops.

Pours a striking straw color with less than a finger of head. The nose is ever so slightly hoppy. The flavor is a bit flat and basic. The finish is clean.

Gold with a white head and super clingy coral lace.

Smell is passionfruit (am I hallucinating?, I've had the fruit a few times already this trip), with grape, corn and grass.

Taste is lager-like, with corn, bread, grass, and floral notes. It's just barely bitter, and not much of an IPA at all, and BA seems to have labeled this otherwise as well. I think the bar I had this at mislabeled it.

Crisp, semi-frothy, and semi-wet.

I think the nose of this beer is pretty decent for a blond ale. I'm getting a slight melon hops character almost like some IPA's have, along with a malt base. Flavor has the hint of hops with a lasting malt bread flavor although this is a very thin beer with less carbonation. Pretty decent... easily chuggable.

Pours a four finger white head that fades quickly to a thin layer leaving some lace. Crystal clear, very pale amber color. Light carbonation and light bodied. Malt & honey nose. Flavor is bready, honey and hints of hops. Good lawn mower beer. In $9.99 6-pak Shaw's Supermarket Concord, NH. Bottled Sep 2016.

The look was a very clear golden color with lots of carbonation and not much of a white head.

The smell was not pleasant. I was getting a lot of damp, dank hops and an onion like vegetation smell coming up really strong. Now somewhere in there was some tropical fruits as well but almost overpowered by the earthy aroma.

The taste had some tropical fruits like maybe a sweet kiwi and some nice floral hops. The only problem was the onion thing was sneaking in on the taste.

The mouth feel was a bit sticky yet fairly light and finished off to nothing leaving one ready for another sip.

Glad we only got singles of this one to try as I will not purchase it again. That aroma of onions and vegetation that bled over to the taste really turned me off to this beer. Now others may have a different experience with this beer so if you wish to, give it a twirl.

On-tap served in a pint glass at Taproom, Bangkok.

Clear bright gold in color with large silky white head with very good retention, it slowly dissipates to an eternal foamy layer on the surface and leaves plenty of lacing patch and spot along the way down.

Pretty mild aroma at first but it gets to develop by time, hop with notes of floral, light citrus, and mild fruity while malt with notes of biscuit, some suggestion of sweet honey, and caramelized toffee.

Pretty light and clean taste and more flat comparing to the aroma, suggestion of toasted grain and a bit sweet cracker from malt at first, hop then follows up closely with its mild frutiness and light citrus zest where bitterness seems a bit hard to find.

Light body with rather smooth mouthfeel and subtle carbonation generated just a bit refreshing feel through the palate, dry and clean finish.

Pretty easy drinkable and go down very easy with any food pairing or in the light day.

Poured from the bottle into a glass.

Semi-opaque golden hue.

White head; minimal lace.

Honeyed grain notes in the nose.

Medium thin mouthfeel.

Honey hops up front, with a hint of strawberry; frosted flake finish. A nice treat for a hot day.

L: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a golden yellow color and a clear consistency. There was a half inch, foamy head that lasted a below average amount of time. Not a lot of lacing here.

S: A very thin, underwhelming aroma of malt, honey, and some hops as well.

T: Tasted of fair amount of honey, light malt notes (not as noticeable due to the honey), a little bit of hops, some light citrus (lemon, in particular), and a bready quality. Slightly thin in the finish. Not a particularly complex flavor, but it's decent enough. Very light and focused on the honey and citrus.

F: An average amount of carbonation with a somewhat syrupy finish. Light-bodied.

O: Blonde ales are rarely great examples of complex and flavor, and Big Wave is no exception. Still, it's a light and refreshing beer.

Ontap. Clear honey gold, good solid film, some early lace. Very gentle fruity hops. Watery in character, not big in any way. Quite subdued taste. Light beer good for maybe washing stuff down. Unremarkable.

Big wave is a great beginner craft beer for people looking to expand their horizons. Its light enough to be drinkable, but has enough hop flavor to open up a persons palate a little. My girlfriend tried this and it opened her up to trying other beers i recommend (they all don't work out tho).
If you want to like ipas but dont like the bitterness, this is your beer. It has flavor without being in your face. The hop flavor has been described by friends as grapefruit like. But its not sweet like a shandy. If you want a low abv smooth summer sipper, this is your guy. If you're a craft snob, this may be too light to hit the spot. Worth a try though.

a light IPA or pale ale taste with pretty constant malt, sweet fruity middle that carries through to the end.

Taste Rating in Words: It's a pool party, there is always enough to keep you entertained and you always enjoy yourself. Afterward you are drained and tired all around satisfied.

Pours a translucent golden yellow color with minimal head but a decent amount of carbonation. Aroma is pleasant with a fair share of hops and some sweet citrus. Taste does not follow the nose as the hop character is diminished. Really not much taste at all with some grain balancing the hops. Doesn't taste bad - just not much there. Feel is really the best part of the beer as it drinks like a heavier beer but without the ABV. Very good ale ..not much too complain about but not much to rave about either.

Kona Brewing Co. - Big Wave Golden Ale. 4.4% ABV. 12oz bottle poured into a snifter. Bottled on 4/19/16. (Reviewed 9/4/16).

Look: As the name states, vibrant gold bodied, with a foamy white head that ends up as a ring of lacing.

Smell: Hops, some malt, and light citrus fruit notes.

Feel: Light to medium bodied and easy to drink, with mild carbonation.

Taste: Seems to have a malty backbone, with some hop and sour fruit notes.

Overall: I Expected this beer to be an AAL, but it was a pleasant surprise that it isn't. Definitely not bad, but not really a go to beer for me.

Kona Big Wave Golden Ale
(ABV: 4.4%) (IBU: 21)

AROMA - floral hops, biscuity and cereal-like malts, sweet citrus hops, light hints of caramel

APPEARANCE – brilliant golden straw hue, foamy white head, medium-high carbonation with small streaks of thin lacing, low head retention

FLAVOR – malt graininess, tropical pineapple, bready caramel malt, citrus zest, honey sweetness, grassy hops, slight hint of corn

MOUTHFEEL – light bodied with a gentle carbonating crispness, clean dry finish

OVERALL – This is a tidal wave of refreshment; malt flavors dominate the beer with undertones of delicate hops to provide a nice balance. Definitely recommended as a Hawaiian travel companion as you show off your 6-pack

From a bottle, pours a clear yellow with a 1 finger foamy off-white head that settles to a thin cap. Aroma is really subtle, but I might guess there are some floral hops. Flavor was, like, smooth and gone ... and I was like, "what were the actual flavors again?" It has fruity malt with a grainy hops, but again, it is all really easy going.

L: Consumed in bottle, but appears to be pale straw with some foamy head.

S: Orange pith, floral, grainy and cracker malts, lager yeast.

T: Diluted orange juice, orange peel, cracker, grainy malts, with a watery but clean finish. Slightly dry.

F: Light, crisply carbonated, clean.

O: A typical blond ale. Light, crisp, refreshing. Does its job.

On draught not far from the brewery. Light, easy drinking ale. Pale gold, floral notes, some tropical fruit, a little gassy. Not exceptional but hits the spot when coming in from a hot morning on the water.

I really, really liked this beer!!

(L) It looks like your typical blonde ale, so no surprise there.

(S) I didn't really notice to much of a smell, which is kind of misleading because what I think it lacks there definitely makes up for the taste.

(T) The taste wasn't overly sweet or hoppy it was really well balanced, but the hints pinapple and mango and honey shine through and personally they are some of my favorites. It still keeps to the true blonde ale taste, so it doesn't taste like you're drinking fruit juice. I've had those and this isn't it!

(F) It's light and refreshing, goes down smooth and easy, perfect for a hot summer day.

(O) I recommend it, excellent beer for any time of year. I like it and would love to see more places get this on tap. Any way you can find it I suggest you try it!

Aroma: Light bready malt aroma with citrusy/tropical hop aroma... some fruit suggestive of apple/pear is also present. No off flavors. Very inviting.

Appearance: Brilliant clarity with dark gold color. Poured low white head that faded quickly to a ring of medium bubbles.

Flavor: Med-low bready malts with a hint of light caramel. Citrusy/piney/tropical hop flavor is medium-low. The bitterness is also medium-low. Finishes medium-dry with no lingering aftertaste. Low fruit esters again, suggesting apple/pear. Great balance and drinkability.

Mouthfeel: Light body with medium high carbonation. Effervescent and bubbly with no creaminess or astringency. Fizziness complements the drier finish and enhances drinkability.

Overall: Great lawnmower beer. Crisp, light and thirst-quenching. Head retention was a little low and hops could be boosted slightly in the flavor and aroma. Excellent beer and a very good representation of the American Blonde Ale style.

A fairly clear (chill haze) deep golden, finger + of white foamy head that lasts forever and slides down the glass as you drink the beer and leaves some nice lacing for a 4.4% beer. Lots of bubbles rising. The aroma is mild but I'm getting salty sun flower seeds and a crackery biscuit. The flavor is mildly sweet and again sun flower seeds come to mind. Not bitter, not harsh, no off flavors whatsoever. The feel is soft and the beer is refreshing and fairly dry but not crisp like it's lager counterparts. I wish the carbonation was a bit heavier in the taste, it looked way above average. Average carbonation and thin but not watery. This would be great on the beach, 4.4%, all day long.

12oz bottle, dated JUN0116
A - golden I presume, but drank from the bottle, so unknown
S - smells fruity with some biscuity grain
T - nice tropical fruitiness without the bitterness; mango, pineapple, and a bit of passion fruit; biscuity malt and a touchof honey; yeast
M - lighter body, moderate carbonation, balanced finish
O - pretty average golden ale. As always, glad to try something new, but I wouldn't get this again.

12oz bottle in a shaker.

Clear yellow gold color that gets slightly cloudy after a minute or two. The 1F white cap fades very fast.

Slightly grainy, slightly sweet, slightly floral; very light aromas.

Light and sweet malt, a touch of floral hops.

Somewhat like a pilsner with less hop bite. Light and easy, like summertime.

A decent light summer ale, a crowd pleaser.

I wasn't expecting to like this beer. For some reason I was expecting a cheap Mexican like beer. I guess I equate beaches and waves and yellow beer with bad beer. However, I quite enjoyed this beer it was full of flavor and interesting to drink.
