Amaaaaazingly tropical in the nose! This overwhelming taste and smell is achieved by adding passionfruit, orange and guava to the hops. Very fruity, a bit like canned syrupy tropical fruits somewhere faintly. You might feel sometimes when smelling a rich IPA that you would wish if its taste was the same - this one quite makes it come true, its taste is very close to how richly tropical it smells.
Its taste is quite light, almost like a session IPA but halfway through the tropical fruits enter and linger on till the very end - quite the opposite of a regular IPA where you have the flavor boost first and the taste fades away.
Very nice and tropically rich, seasonable IPA, recommended for every IPA/Kona fan.

I was surprised by how much I liked this.
The smell is just a bit perfumy, but I found this ale to be well balanced, over all.
I like the bitterness, and the fruity undertones complement instead of dominating.
"Easy drinking" describes it perfectly.
It's my favorite Kona brew.
I drink it COLD.

The description reads: "Passionfruit, orange and guava balance the subtle bitterness of aromatic Azacca and Galaxy hops to deliver a coppery laidback, session-style ale bright with tropical flavors and just 4.5 percent alcohol by volume". In my opinion this is a extremely easy drinking beer and would be a good introductory/gateway beer for non IPA drinkings since the bitterness is very low. This drinks more like a juice than a beer.

Hazy golden amber. Fruity and floral aroma of POG. Extremely easy drinking beer and would be a good gateway beer for non IPA drinker. Definitely reminiscent of Hawaii.

Not sure of 2 things: Why it says this beer is retired? - it's not. Why only 44.4% "like" this beer? - it's pretty solid.

Honestly the worst thing about this is the pour. It's a very light gold without much head or lacing.
Aroma is peach, passionfruit and orange.
Taste is citrus forward with a nice bread/cracker finish.
Feel is medium bodied; medium carbonation.
Overall, a crisp, fruity IPA that is is not overly sweet or fruity. The fruity nose with a crisp, semi-dry, bread-y finish keeps me coming back. Another very clean tasting beer by Kona, these guys don't disappoint.

I didn't like this one at first sip but once I found out I was tasting passion fruit, orange, and what I didn't like guava I loved it. The guava is actually my favorite flavor in this beer. It is beautiful and I think it is clear but I'm drinking it in a dark bar so I might be wrong. I smells ok but not great. I do smell the good and citrus but it is nothing to write home about. The taste is something to write home avout because once you know what is in the beer you will love it like I do. Btw this is the first Kona beer I actually like. I atribute that to more knowledge of beer.

Kona Brewing Company Hanalei Island IPA
Live review. Poured from stubby 12 oz. bottle that I bought as a “mix sixer” from Giant Eagle in Madison, Ohio about a few weeks ago into a clean, clear glass. “Mix sixer“ was $10.99. Date stamped on the label says FEB 23 17 so it should be fresh.
A: Translucent golden yellow body under an inch white head after moderate to vigorous pour. Fair to good look. 3.5
S: Wow, this is interesting! The Passionfruit, Orange and Guava are right up front. It is as if I am sniffing a wonderful tropical drink in Hawaii! This is what I was hoping for when I picked up some beer from the Kona Brewing Company. Behind the awesome sweetness of those fruit smells is a distant floral hops. VERY good smell! 4.5
T: A little too fruity sweet up front but the second half of the taste reveals a nicely balanced hops bitterness and fruity goodness. Really unique and delicious taste. 4.5
M: A lot going on here. You have the fruity sweetness, the hops bitterness which makes the feel kind of a roller coaster ride. Very good feel for the style. 4.0
D/O: Drinkability is quite high (I finished the 12 ounces already, that is not common when I write a live review). I could have 4 or 5 of these without hesitation. Overall this is a really enjoyable IPA. 4.0
Notes: Glad that I tried this one. This is a good example of why it is fun to buy a “mix-sixer.”

Hanalei Island IPA brewed by Kona Brewing Co., With an ABV of 4.50% This American IPA pours out a nice golden amber color with a small white head. There is also some nice spotty lacing to this brew, it does stick to the side of the glass. The smell is rich with hop bitterness, earthy grains and malts. You also pick up on some minor sweetness in the smell as well. Now for the taste, it is rich with citrus sweetness hop bitterness. Really clean and Refreshing brew. You also pick up on a good amount of earthy grains and malts. This is one of the more milder American IPA on the market, not saying that is a bad thing. The body of Hanalei Island IPA ,is a solid medium. There is nothing overpowering about this brew, it has a super nice balance to it. This American IPA would go nicely on a hot summer day. The mouth feel is Citrus, Hoppy, Clean, Smooth, and Refreshing. Overall I am going to give Hanalei Island IPA a 4.25 out of 5. I would definitely look this brew up again giving the opportunity to. Kona Brewing Co., Did a real nice job with this brew.

A light straw color with a descent head and a little lacing. Smells tropical with hints of mango and grapefruit. Citrus hits the tongue with mango and grapefruit being what I taste. Smooth and not super hoppy. Good beer.

Grabbed out of curiosity, because I love Longboard Lager, and the cool packaging look of Kona products. Poured a cold bottle into an ipa glass. Nice head, great fresh aromas, tropical, and a nice color. Light crisp ale that refreshes the palate.
A really good, EASY drinking session IPA that won't knock you out after 3 or 4. Well done.

Great beer for a hot summer day. Fruity aroma but doesn’t taste too sweet. Solid brew.
