Poured from a bottle into a pint glass.

A: The beer pours a deep opaque brown with a creamy thick head and significant lacing.

S: A rich brewed coffee smell is accompanied by sweet malt. This is a good smelling beer but not as rich and complex as some others of this style.

T: Strong rich coffee flavors burst onto the tongue at the onset of the sip, followed by crisp maltiness and a slightly bitter finish.

M: The beer feels thick and creamy in the mouth with sufficient carbonation.

Overall, this is a good beer, probably the best that I've had from this brewery. The coffee flavors are some of the deepest and richest that I have had in the style, what else would you expect from a beer that come from a region that prides itself on its kona coffee. The beer exhibits a fairly complex taste, but lacks some of the sweet cream flavors that can be found in other offerings.

Poured into a nonic.

Pours a deep, dark near black colored brew that has a two finger thick mocha colored head. Nice lacing as the head recedes.

Smells of roasted coffee, espresso, and chocolate malts.

Predominately tastes of roasted coffee and dark chocolate. Has a nice dose of muted hop bitters toward the end that is fairly well balanced with some malt sweetness.

Medium mouthfeel with good carbonation.

This is my first taste from Kona Brewing and I am not disappointed. I think the coffee is a bit more pronounced, which sets this apart from other American Porters. A nice take that is an easy drinker and a worthwhile try.

Fresh beer. Bottled on December 7th and poured into a tulip on January 1st. Pours a dark color with a finger size head with the head color of mocha coffee. Smells of coffee grains and maybe some banana? Taste is rich with a full body that sticks around seconds after a gulp.
Overall it is a good beer. Will buy again.

12 oz bottle. Deep brown with finger tan head, fades quickly to thin ring, not much lace. Roasted coffee aroma. Nice smooth chocolate coffee taste, finish is more sweet than bitter. Thin to medium mouthfeel but semi silky. Solid coffee porter.

A - Poured a very nice shade of charcoal brown while retaining a sudsy head of caramel-cream foam.

S - Booyaaa! I'm not a coffee drinker by any means, in fact I loathe the stuff, but this smelt damn good. Definitely smelling the beans, as well as the malty-roasty goodness you'd expect in a porter.

T - Lovely. Less coffee than on the nose which suits me down to the ground. Hardly any discernible alchol, yet was still rich and smokey. Not much variance between first sip and after taste, so couldn't attribute it great complexity.

M - Smooth, thick and nicely carbonated.

O - Honestly I thought this was a really solid brew. Tasty, nicely balanced coffee flavour and well measured carbonation and viscosity on the tongue. Nothing earth shattering here but this could well be my go-to beer while I'm on the Islands. Would definitely take 6 of these over 4 Maui CoCoNuts.

12 oz bottle poured into a Nonic. Aug2509 printed on the neck. No info besides that it's made with 100% Hawaiian Kona Coffee.

Thanks to Beerwolf77 for scoring a Hawaiian beer for me from Nevada! A coffee beer at that!

A - Pours clear but turns completely black in the glass. An effervescent, surprisingly light tan head springs up to a low level only to drop fairly quickly. A thin ring is left with no lace.

S - Imagine sticking your nose into a cold pot of black coffee. That's what pipeline is like. Cold black coffee with roasted malts in the background and really nothing else. The aroma is pretty low but good.

T - Much more roasted malts appear in the flavor giving it a hearty, rich feel that supports the black coffee flavor. While the coffee isn't as big as the nose foreshadowed, it's very authentic tasting. Good coffee used!

M - This porter is surprisingly rich and full-bodied. Lots of malts in there with a moderately dry and roasted finish.

D - A good coffee porter but all the flavors could stand to be a bit bigger. A great start though and a good breakfast beer! I wouldn't turn this beer down ever.

An average pour yields half a finger of thin, tan head. The body is cola brown, and difficult to make out light coming through.

This smells malty, with a little vanilla and smoke. Coffee is also present.

Malty, with a big smoke presence. Coffee makes an appearance on the back end. Simple but good.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied. It clings to the tongue in a pleasant manner, and leaves it a little sticky.

I have been wanting to taste more from Kona Brewing for a while, ever since I tasted the excellent Fire Rock Pale Ale. I finally got around to it... This porter is an appropriate dark shade of brown, nearly opaque, with a bubbly head, similar to Cola. The head diminishes to barely cover the top of the beer after a few minutes. There's some remnants that cling to the side of the glass, but not much. The aroma is very pleasing and fresh - like a cafe mocha topped with whipped cream. The taste trumps the aroma... the 100% Kona coffee flavor is one of the most distinct in any beer I have ever tasted! It's quite toasty and towards the tail end of the flavor there's a tiny hint of hops. The beer is very light, borderline watery. The taste lingers for a few seconds in the finish but disappears in a dry fade. In short, it tastes similar to a lightly sweetened iced coffee. Despite some of the negative sounding things in the review, I really like this and will definitely be buying it regularly! I like to always have a beer around that is satisfying, yet somewhat low calorie. This fits that bill perfectly, with the added bonus of the gourmet coffee aspect.

12oz bottle poured inta a stemmed tulip glass.

A- Very dark brown-black color, opaque. A frothy British tan colored head that settles to a film.
Lava-like lacing!

S-Bittersweet coffee notes, dark roasted. A faint floral hop presence.

T-Strong coffee up front, then dark roasty malts. The malts must have been roasted to the very limit prior to 'burning'. Well done.

M- Quite light and thin for the look and taste. The good strong flavors fade fast. Slight hop tang at the end.

O- For this review, this beer is finishing the evening with a piece of 85% cocoa dark chocolate. It's a good combo.

12 oz. bottle poured into chilled handle mug at Islands Restaurant.

Opaque, decent tan head looks pretty alright, even if it's got a few too many larger bubbles. Retention and lacing are a bit spotty, docked a half point for that.

Aroma is terrific; strong of coffee, retaining good bitterness and richness of nose. Well done. Flavor loses a little in translation as the coffee is still present but not as in your face as I'd hoped.

Mouthfeel is decently thick, not terrific, but very serviceable. Nicely drinkable, I enjoyed it with a BBQ burger and it held up without overpowering either that flavor or the wonderful fries. Solid, dependable porter, easy to drink, but not quite the home run I was hoping for from Kona.

Glad to find this one...

A: Dark with ruby highlights and little head the quickly disappears. Nothing special here.

S: Not much of a scent. I have to sniff hard to get a good smell of it. Hints of coffee scent. That's about it.

T: Good, but not great. Tastes like coffee and water. Not much else going on.

M: Perfect amount of carbonation. Goes down easy.

D: Very easy to drink.

All in all. This is a decent brew to try at least once if you like porters or breakfast stouts. Reminds me of a poor man's version of Stone Kona Coffee brew.

Poured from a bottle on 12-17-09.

A - pours a pitch black with a tan foam that just quickly disappeared to spotty tan bubbles

S - big roasted coffee aromas, coffee, coffee & more coffee
Like no other bottled coffee beer i've had before

T - its the equivalant to drinking cold coffee. Great tasting all around

M - smooth, good carbonation, creamy mouthfeel

D - I really like this one alot, not as an everyday beer, but definitely as a regular one.

A: Transparent dark brown. No head whatsoever, moderate lacing.

S: Fresh coffee grinds, mild dark chocolate, honey, malty sweetness. Some small hints of cherry and oak are in the aroma.

T: Nice rich and fresh coffee flavor with vanilla and honey. Dark chocolate, maple, dark sugared fruits and some kind of unfamiliar hoppy and grainy taste are all there. Finish is smooth and creamy.

M: Rich and smooth, with an interesting hop bite. Medium body with carbonation on the high side.

D: Pretty great. The bitter bite throughout the flavor is interesting, but not fitting.

Appearance: Dark roast coffee. I give this some extra points for this, because that's what it touts itself as.

Smell: Wow! Coffee. Slightly sweeter coffee at at that.

Taste/Mouthfeel: Bitter coffee in the head and the finish. Even the mouthfeel has the slick coffee feel.

Overall Drinkability: Did I mention coffee?

It pours a nice dark black color with a strong coffee smell. The taste is a full flavor coffee blast but hints of roasted malt. It has a smooth medium body that goes down easy. A easily drinkable porter.
