Poured from a bottle into pint glass.

Appearance: Very dark almost black, with nice brown head. The head lasted a very long time, and left a nice coating on the inside of the glass.

Smell: Pleasant, with a nice balance. Can smell the hops, coffee, and roasted malts, but none of the aromas dominate the others.

Taste: A nice mix of hops and malts, and with a hint of roasted coffee. The hops are just enough to balance the malts and provide for some complexity. There are hints of some sweetness from the malt, with a little coffee flavor. There is a nice mix of hop and malt influence in the after taste.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, and with a good body.

Overall: This is an interesting porter. It is better than I expected, and I would buy another case.

This one was part of the variety pack. I really liked everything in it this year and ended up by a couple of the 12 packs.

Poured in to an imperial pint glass, the beer is a dark, dark brown with a skim of tan foam.

It has a nose of dark fruit, roasted malts and a hint of coffee.

Taste leads with dark roasted malts, raisins, brown sugar & coffee. it is slightly bitter from the roast. There is just a whisper of alcohol which is low enough as not to be distracting.
To me the mouth is a touch over carbonated. But it is a bit thick which works.

This is a nice porter and one I'm glad to have had multiple times this winter.

A - Pours dark brown with a 1 finger head. Holding it to light reveals a brown color around the sides of the glass, but nearly black in the center cylinder.

S - A coffee smell which I was pleased not to be hit over the head with.

T - Excellent. The coffee is not over powering, not bitter - just right. Very drinkable.

M - A bit waxy in the finish, otherwise good

O - If not the best coffee porter I have ever had, it is right up there. Outstanding. I would recommend this beer highly.

Poured from their uniquely embossed stubby 12 ounce bottle into a large pilsener glass. I gave it a pretty aggressive pour, and ended up with about 2 inches of billowy, frothy, pale brown head. The head is pretty sticky- settles to about a 1/4 inch head that stays for the duration. The beer is a very dark brown, scarcely admitting light from a standard household light (or computer screen).

I detect the coffee in the aroma-flavor, but it's not overpowering by any means. The coffee shines through especially in the aftertaste- and tastes like good, rich and surprisingly fresh coffee. A bit of diacetyl flavor shows through as well. This butter-like flavor is likewise detectable in the aroma and is present in their brown ale as well. With these beer styles, I think this adds rather than detracts from the overall effect with a beer such as this. In between I detect some earthy hops, nutty flavor-aromas, and maybe some dark bread. Fairly dry with no big time fruity flavors, which is a nice change-up from what I've been drinking lately. I'm often somewhat skeptical of coffee beers, but this one hits the mark pretty well. I might have to go out and try some of that Hawaiian coffee now.

I bought this beer as part of a variety 12 pack at Three Bears Alaska for about 14 bucks (cheap), so I'm on a bit of a Kona kick. I tried their coconut brown ale about a year ago, but had not seen it in most stores around here.

A-black with a large brown head and a red tint when you shine the light through it and it leaves a spotted lace
S-toasted with a coffee aroma and some chocolate
T-hard coffee taste with a bitter and roasted aftertaste that stays with you til the end
M-medium body and high carbonation
O- This beer is a great beer, but I just cant see drinking this on the beach where it is made

A: Pours black with a brown ring of head.

S: Nose is faint, mostly coffee.

T: Coffee, chocolate, roasted malt, not bitter, which is nice.

M: Medium bodied, smooth and creamy.

O: Body was nice, coffee was there, but then again it always is with a porter. Still, this was good and I would recommend it to anyone who likes coffee, stouts or porters.

a: dark, but not pitch black. More of a dark mahogany color (as I can still see some amber at the bottom of my glass) weak head, but overall, it looks good I suppose. 3.5---5

s:wow, this beer really excels in this area. It smells of English toffee, coco, chocolate, and coffee. It smells very sweet yet roasty. Its obvious that the beers coffee does it job well. 4.5----5

T: This beer comes in a bit more on the dry side, but it has a nice smoothness that compliments it flavors nicely. A medium amount of coffee and chocolate dominate this beer, with a fantastic coffee aftertaste. A easy 4----5

M: like I said in taste, its a mix between being a bit dry, but with enough smoothness to make it more welcoming. 3.75---5

Overall: I was not expecting that much at all from this beer, but it surprised me. The main craft brewery in Hawaii really does make a great coffee porter! easy to drink, low roast, and focused on the coffee...this beer does what it advertises that it does and does it very well. Not as good as thunderstruck coffee porter, and not even in the same league as brews like Wake N Bake, this still has its place at the table of GREAT coffee beers and should be picked up with thunderstruck when your looking to diversify what kind of coffee beer your drinking.

A easy coffee beer to miss, but one that really should give a shot

The first sip was very nice - a bit of coffee mixed with chocolate, and very smooth. Maybe as my palate become overwhelmed, the beer became more watery tasting and the nice flavors of the coffee and chocolate were no longer as pronounced. Still, overall a very enjoyable porter.

Thin head on a dark body "Think Rihanna".

Toasted grain, dark chocolate and roasted coffee.

Assertive roasted malt, medium coffee tones with just a touch of salted caramel. Tasty.

Smooth and ruch with moderate carbonation.

Well done

The taste is milky, roasted malt and coffee with just a touch of burnt. Nice.
The texture is soft and creamy with moderate carbonation.
It has a good balance and great flavor. Enjoyable.

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a black color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of coffee, a bit of chocolate. Taste is strong of coffee, roasted malts, a mild bitterness. Feels full bodied in the mouth and overall is a very good beer, worth checking out.

A shade lighter than black. Very dark. Head is small. Never accrued height. A thin disc of tan foam sits.

Semi-sweet, very roasty, and caressed with a solid coffee note. Earthy, caramelly, and a little chocolatey. Some creme to quell some of the dark roast. Hints of nut flesh and dried fruit.

Rugged porter with a big roast character and some excellent dry coffee flavors. A bit of dusty cocoa, dry toffee, earthy malts, herbal hop, and a touch of spice. A little thin, which is to say that bitterness has too much contrast. Attenuated, but tasty. Easy to enjoy, but the body needs a little more heft to it. Effervescence has some sizzle. A nice porter.

Good, solid beer, but not the greatest Porter. Pretty good marks in all categories but nothing that strikes me as great. Has a nice head and a clean, roasted taste. Good finish but fades quickly. Pretty well carbonated but light body. Could use something in my opinion to make it better; more hops or heavier body.

App - large tan head, creamy and long lasting. Nearly opaque with garnet highlights. Stout-like darkness.

Roasty/chocolately aroma, some sweetness. Almost like creamed coffee.

Some malt sweetness, a bit of coffee roastiness. Slightly smokey. Hop character and bitterness is subtle. Finishes with a lingering gentle roast flavor. Has a somewhat unusual flavor, probably driven by the coffee.

Medium body and carbonation. Some creaminess. No astringency or warming.

Overall - flavors are pleasant, but generally subdued.

From a mixed six...

Pours dark, almost black into a tulip glass. Light head that recedes fairly quickly and leaves little evidence it was ever there. Bottle shape makes it kinda hard to hold onto, which isn't a big deal if you're just pouring into a glass, but I thought it was noteworthy.

Aroma is of coffee and grain. I've had Kona, pretty recently, and I can't say this leapt out at me as being of that particular bean, due to the overall light nose on this. Flavor is lacking something; more flavor, some structure, more coffee, something. "Coffee-flavored Coors Light" is in my notes on it from tonight. Light mouthfeel, medium to light carbonation, negligible bitterness.

Overall, light and wimpy, and wouldn't get again. Will say it got better towards the end of the glass, but wouldn't recommend over SN or Fullers or something. The coffee wasn't really there, not much smoke, just kind of a mish mash of malts and light abv, wasn't much to latch onto or like here for me.

I do actually like their Longboard lager but this one's a miss in my book.

Pours a black color. 2/3 inch head of a tan color. Great retention and great lacing. Smells of coffee, sweet malt, roasted malt, and hint of hops. Fits the style of an American Porter. Mouth feel is smooth and clean, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of coffee, sweet malt, roasted malt, and a hint of hops. Overall, good appearance, coffee dominate, simple blend, but decent body.

Poured from a bottle into a dimpled mug.

A - Opaque dark-brown, with a creamy, one-finger, light tan head. Patches of lacing.

S - Strong aroma of black coffee, roasted grains, ash, and bakers chocolate.

T - Matches the nose, with a hint of sweetness to balance the bitter elements. Espresso beans, smoke, brown sugar, and toffee notes. Very tasty.

M - Thin bodied, but with a delightful creaminess that gives the illusion of thickness. Medium to low carbonation. Feels like a porter should.

O - I liked this a lot. Really well executed on almost every level. Not something I would want to knock back a six'er of, but as a one off it's a real winner.

A: OK looking porter. Not much of a head or lacing.

S: Light to moderate aromas of coffee beans arise along with a perfect blend of hops and sweet malt. Very approachable.

T: The taste follows the flavors of coffee with a great balance of mostly roasted malts and a bit of bitter hops. More sweet than bitter. Nice balance. I like this beer, would like another, and I love this style.

M: It feels light- to medium-bodied and smooth on the palate. Pleasant, and handles the sweetness well. (but a touch too sweet for me).

O: One of the best coffee porters - a great style - must try.

This is my first review in some time, very excited for this. My buddy told me about a year ago this is possibly his favorite beer, so have been looking forward to trying it. Last time I bought one I spilled it all over the carpet (ha) before I got to taste it. So anticipation is high.

Poured from 12oz bottle into a proof brewing company pint glass.

A-Real dark brown. Cannot see through it even when put up to light. Not quite black, but very dark. Head was poor but I believe that was partially due to a bad pour by me. The head was a nice light brown. The little head it had fell real quick (again I poured it poorly), leaving a nice light brown coating over the top though.

S-Smells real good, but kinda weak. Gotta really smell to get it. Mostly coffee. Well pretty much all coffee. Smells a bit sweet as well, not really chocolate, just sweet. Does make me real excited to taste it though.

T-A bit disappointing. Taste is very similar to the smell. Tastes of coffee. Seems a bit weak in the flavor department. The flavor is real good, just a bit watery. Needs a bit more kick. Not bad though. Mostly just a weak, but pleasant coffee flavor, with a nice little sweetness to it.
No real bitterness on the finish, which is good, wouldn't work well with this one.

MF- Lighter body than I was expecting from the look. Again seems a bit watery. Not bad, something you could easily sip on all day, or slam if thats what you prefer (not me though).

O-A bit of a let down for what I was hoping for, but still a nice beer. Will definitely enjoy the entire 6 pack (though not tonight, gotta study). A very good beer for someone wanting to try a coffee beer, but not a coffee fan. Maybe my review is a bit skewed being that I had my first founders breakfast 2 days ago and that blew my mind. But Overall this is a nice, pleasant beer, that I think most beer lovers would thoroughly enjoy.

Bottle dated: Sep.12, 2013.

Pours opaque black with cola edges. Head is off-white and settles to a thin film on top that leaves spotty lace.

Smell is of spent coffee grounds, earthy hops and faint molasses.

Taste is of roasted malt, bitter black coffee and faint toffee sweetness.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with higher carbonation.

A solid coffee porter; not to heavy, tasty and, at 5.4 ABV, certainly sessionable.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle stamped 13:47-3-NOV0513. Sampled on December 2, 2013 so that may be beyond it expiration date if that is what the Nov 5-13 stamp implies.

It is attractive looking dark brown pour to about black with a modest beige head that settles down after a moment. Opaque.

The nose is coffee and spent coffee grinds all the way with only the vaguest note of earthy hops in the background.

Thin to medium body.

Like the aroma the flavor is alive with coffee grinds that taste like they've been collecting in the bottom of a coffee pot with the burner still on. But then there is this moderate dark fruit bitterness at the end that lingers for some time, usurping the coffee character.

12 oz .bottle, with August 27, 2013 printed on the label. I'll assume that is a brewed on date, but whatever. Another new beer to me from Kona Brewing Co. My bottle lists a 5.30% abv rather than 5.40% listed on BeerAdvocate. Expectations are moderately high; a porter with Hawaiian coffee sounds delicious.

Poured into a Miller High Life pint glass.

A - Pours just under two fingers of creamy mocha head on top of a dark chocolate colored body. Just a hint of ruby passes through the glass when held to the light.

S - Smell is of dark roasted malts. Bitter coffee beans. Vanilla. Very bitter baking chocolate. Cream. Some liquid smoke / char. Smells very dark and bitter.

T - Taste is of dark malt roast, creamy vanilla, bitter powdery chocolate, coffee beans, smoke, and an earthy herbal hop presence. Hints of dark fruits like figs, dates, and raisins come out in the mix also.

M - Feel is creamy and smooth, with some dark coffee bitterness lingering on the palate. Medium bodied with high carbonation, that wouldn't hurt to be toned down just a tad.

Overall, while this isn't your usual bourbon barrel aged stout brewed with coffee, it is definitely one of the best choices for your average everyday American style porter, especially at only 5.30% abv. Clearly the best beer I've had from these guys yet, and I do hope they choose to continue brewing it.

The beer was served in a pint glass at The Avenue in Allston.

Appearance: This beer poured a one finger head that reduced to a small layer. It is a pitch black color with no clarity or vision of bubbles coming up through the glass. Super nice lacing as the beer was drank.

Smell: Vanilla, smoke, roasted, chocolate, and a little molasses.

Taste: Smoke, spiciness, roasted, vanilla, chocolate, and a little bitterness in the end. Very tasty porter.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, full bodied, balanced, drinkable, low to medium carbonation.

Overall: Pretty solid beer from Hawaii or wherever it is made now. Probably NH. Anyways, will be enjoying more.
