I would give this a B/B+. It is certainly preferrable over Leinenkugel Sunset Wheat. For truly fruity wheat beers I think it is the most enjoyable with that amount of fruitiness. The smell is fruity. It is probably better to drink cold from a bottle so the fruit stays "down". The top of the beer has a bit too hot (intense) of a fruityness. After that it mellows out nicely and is pretty drinkable. I had it on tap and it was much better as the fruit aromas had dissipated a bit. In the bottle, it's nice after a heavier stronger beer and kind of realigns the palate and refreshes. I had it after the Gubna. Anyhow, tap is certainly preferred, but it is of mention that one girl in our party preferred it over her newfound favorite, Sol, and probably one of the best lagers available, Blue Point Toasted, and anything else she tried which was technically a better beer. She said the sweetness was just right. Ironically she doesn't like fruity ice cream or fruit smoothies and likes blended ice coffee drinks and dark (very dark) gelato/ice cream, but prefers this beer.

Another one that I could not get into at all. I was like "hey, hints of passion fruit, cool"... Poured this pup and it looked like some yellow water. Didn't even glitter or foam interestingly. The smell was super weak and the taste even more so. Far too watery of a beer. You can tell there's some kind of 'exotic fruitiness' going on but then you feel like you're sipping straight soda water. I was annoyed that I'd have to sit there and finish this one before I could get another. Let's say that the idea they put forward here was intriguing, but then they dropped the ball.

A-yellow gold, not much head

S-definitely light wheat scent with a lot of tropical fruits mixed in

T-very very light taste of wheat, taste suggests a much lower ABV. passion fruit taste isn't as strong as i was hoping. the wheat after taste, however, is pleasant.

M-more than a medium amount of carbonation, usually not desired, but feels nice for this beer

D-it seems the initial taste fades slightly through the experience; however, the after taste stays delightful. this is not the best or worst tasting beer but definitely doesn't become worse through the experience like some mediocre beers I've had. Many of these can be consumed in a sitting while being content with each one.

Poured into a Nonic.

A: Brilliant gold with a slight chill haze and little visible carbonation. A generous white cap quickly withdraws to a patchwork film. Leaves a little lace.

S: Smells like pomegranate on top of dry bread, plus a whisper of lemon.

T: Cracker and straw flavors start things out. The pomegranate adds a vague fruity tartness in the middle. Bitterness is light, but balancing and has a light pepper bite. Finishes semi-dry, with some lingering tart pomegranate flavor.

M: The medium-light body is slightly syrupy and has the right amount of fizz.

D: This beer honestly didn't do much for me. The lightness; however, makes it go down quick

a- looks like your average apple flavored juice box. pours barely thicker than water with hardly any carbonation and a head thats hardly thicker than a library card
s- i have no experience with passionfruit so i have to go with the first thing that comes to mind and thats grapefruit. it smells like a bottle of grapefruit extract.
t- the taste follows suit with the smell. i think without the addition of the passionfruit, it might be a decent wheat ale even without any flavoring.
mf- the mouthfeel isnt even a step up from your standard gas station adjunct lager
d- i suppose its easy to put down once you adjust to the super tart passionflower flavor but i wouldnt suggest this to anyone ever

Why isn't this a fruit beer? I did not use this beer as anyway to accurately judge this beer seeing as it traveled from Hawaii to SC

A - Light amber color with small off white head. Fades quickly for a wheat leaving little lacing.

S - Wheat and definite passion fruit.

T/M - medium bodied with a slight syrupy mouth feel. the aftertaste is very pleasant and hangs around for a while. The start is definite wheat but switches to a sour fruit flavor. It is not overwhelming the transition is smooth and pleasant.

D - One was great, two was nice, any more than that is overkill. I would love to try this one fresh.

A: This beer looks identical to apple juice, very still and lifeless with a very clear golden appearance. No head to speak of and looks like it has been through an arduous filtering process.

S: huge passion fruit smell all over the front, very fruit forward but somewhat unique with the variety of fruit, not much wheat character

T: like the nose, the taste is fruit forward. It tastes a bit like fruit juice, not much like a American Pale Wheat Beer.

MF: thin body, low carbonation

D: This is a unique fruit beer and I am glad I tried it, but I can't say i would drink this often

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a cloudy golden color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is mostly of passion fruit, some wheat, a bit sour. Taste is also dominated by passion fruit, again some wheat, a bit tart, well done. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and has good drinkability. Overall this is a good quality beer.

Pours bright yellow and very fizzy with a head that fades very fast. Smell has a lemony zing and I do believe I detect a bit of the passion fruit. I saw someone else mention fruity pebbles once and I think that best describes it although very faint. Kind of tart upfront with a strange indescribable sweetness following up. Has a bit of a pilsner quality to it. Not bad just a bit strange but actually pretty refreshing drinkability. Mouthfell is a bit thin.

A: Poured with a moderate-sized, white head that dissipated pretty quickly. Body is a little dark for the style, amber-colored, and fairly clear.

S: There's a bit of the wheat coming through here, but the passionfruit that they brew it with definitely wins out. Almost smells like a fruit beer. It's pleasant enough, though.

T: Refreshing... a very decent beach beer (which is where I had it). Again, there's a slight wheat-flavor to it, but mostly the fruit flavor dominates. Luckily, it's not overbearing at all; on the contrary, it's actually more mellow than I expected.

M: Light-medium bodied, medium-high carbonation.

D: Like I said, a very decent beach beer... good for drinking on a hot day in the sun.

12oz bottle poured into pint glass

A: Light golden color with less than a fingers worth of head that dissipates to nothing, with no lacing.

S: I'm getting wheat malt and a touch a tart passion fruit, little plain.

T: I'm getting the wheat taste right up front followed by a sweet/tart passion fruit. A little more sweetness than I was expecting. No bitterness in the aftertaste. Not to bad, just a little confusing.

M: Light bodied good carbonation, crisp yet smooth. Again a little plain, nothing jumping out.

D: Low ABV so you can drink a few of these, but nothing is really begging me to drink this one. The hint of passion fruit is not overbearing but the over feel just is not grabbing me. Worth a shot, some might really like the mix.

Poured from bottle into lager glass, served at 46 degrees.

Palest yellow beer I ever saw, no head. Aroma was alcohol and skunky. Taste was alcohol and bitter, face puckering. Extremely thin and watery. No drinkability. Even if I don't like a beer I can usually finish it, not this one.

Overall one of the five worst beers I've ever had. It's a limited release so hopefully it was just a bad batch or lack of practice. Definitely NOT recommended!

Picked up a single at a liquor store to give it a try. Poured into a standard pint glass. Hazy yellow body. Not much head for a wheat ale. Looks somewhat soapy in complexion. Smell definitely had some tropical fruit notes to it. Taste was pretty good, but different from other wheat ales. The fruit flavor stood out too much for me, and hid the usual wheat ale flavors that I enjoy. It really just tasted like a fruit beer. Mouthfeel also was very thin and watery. Drinkability is decent since it's a very light beer and a pleasant taste. But the sweet fruit flavor is a bit too cloying and makes this beer just decent enough to have one, but I would not drink a few of these.

Upon my pour, I must say it's not overly appealing. A pale yellow color, slightly hazy, but mostly clear. Smell very nice, the passion fruit really comes through here. Blends nicely with the wheat. As for the taste, well, I think it comes up a little short. The pleasant smell left me wanting more. The fruit overwhelms the wheat I believe. It's quite thin on the tongue and very viscous. Drinkability is off the charts. Great summer time beer. Glad I tried it.

Poured into 10oz glass. Poured a pale, urine-yellow color with a tall white head that dissipated quickly and left no lacing. The aroma had a nice wheat scent and a solid smell of weed. The taste was probably average, a little bland without any outstanding features. The body was thinner than average for the style. Drinkability suffered from the beer being boring. Overall, a pretty average beer, it won't kill you to try one, just don't expect to be impressed.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a Wheat glass.

The color is a slightly hazy orange/gold with a finger and a half of foamy white head some nice lacing and quite a bit of carbonation.

The smell is a little bit citrus but has a little bit of a foreign feel to it. There is a slight milk flavor with some nice wheat in the background.

The taste is has a nice wheat flavor but does not seem to execute on taste then it did in the nose. There seems to be a fruity feel that was expected in this beer that goes right by. There is a bit of a creamy flavor but nothing that was promised.

The feel of this beer is nice and light. It does make for a summer time beer and doesn't feel as strong as the ABV would make you think. With a tweak here and there this beer could improve.

Appearance: A clear golden-straw body capped by a finger of whitish head that fades quickly and leaves bare lacing.

Aroma: Crisp and grainy malt with some light notes of tropical fruit.

Flavor: On the whole, Wailua is just a standard American Wheat with the usual balance of grainy flavors and light hoppiness. However, around the edges there are occasional hints of passion fruit that lend a little character. Lots of cereal grains in the finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with prickly, medium-high carbonation a finish that drys slightly.

Drinkability: Easily quaffable, this would work well on a summer's day.

Verdict: Wailua Wheat looked great on paper, but was just a little bland in the glass. Ratchet up the passion fruit a few notches and this might just be something special.

Had this on tap at a place where the only other choice was Sapporo. Should have known better...

It actually is not bad, just not in any way good. It is a very basic, watery wheat ale, with just a tease of citrus to give it a bit of flavor. It is definitely on the thin side, and arrived with little head, and left next to no lacing. Little in the way of nose outside of a bit of breadiness. Pale golden straw, about the only upside was that it was served very cold, and did refresh on a hot summer day.

A - Poured into a Sam Adams Sensory glass. Bottled on date of April 21. This beer looks good. Nice straw yellow body, loads of visible carbonation, and absolutely transparent body. One finger of head that dies down into a thin ring really quickly.

S - Very dishsoapy smell. Very off putting. Wouldn't have guessed beer just from the smell.

T - Ugh. Good idea, but terrible execution. It feels like they tried to choose between something hoppy and something sweet and then ended up going right down the middle. Feels like my tastebuds are being torn. The sweetness is a bit overwhelming. A bit cloying. Really, this beer should probably best be left on the shelf.

MF - Very watery. Carbonation adds a nice zest to it.

D - Very bad. Taste is too cloying.

Beer review from BA Mag Aug 2007.

Wailua is a community on the east side of Kauai at Nounou Mountain (aka the "Sleeping Giant"). This offering is labeled as a "wheat ale brewed with passion fruit."

Obviously filtered, it pours a clear and bright golden color with a thin pure-white head. Light tropical fruit aroma, fresh wheat and powdery malts in the nose. Light on the palate, creamy and coarse with a wheat edge, followed by soft tropical passion fruit flavor. Recalls the juice in a fruit cup as it warms. Faint citrus snap and crispness. Moderate sweetness; low hopping. A slight herbal note and a touch of mint in the background. Dry, husky tannins. Gritty finish.

Interesting choice of fruit, though we wish it finished a bit cleaner. Fairly pedestrian, but that's probably the point. Kona's website suggests pairing this beer with lighter fare: grilled fish and shrimp, roasted chicken, salads and Asian foods. They even suggest vanilla ice cream. Hmm ... pairing this beer sounds more fun than drinking it on its own!

I had this on draft at the Sunset Grill on a recent visit to Boston. When I looked up the beer i realized that I've reviewed it before in a bottle.
This is what I wrote:

This is the third Kona brand i bought this week and have not been let down yet. This is a "wheat with passion fruit" and the fruit is there but not at all overwhelming. Think of an even subtler Watermellon Wheat. Color is very light, carbonation is low, low head but good fizzy in the taste nonetheless. Aroma is very good as is the taste, both being refreshing while maintaining that subtle fruit flavor. Definitely worth getting.

That pretty much sums up my feeling about the draft version. VERY subtle fruit but still there. Get it if you find it.

I don't review a whole lot of beers on BA, but I felt I had to do this beer some justice.

Pours a light golden color with a nice frothy white head.

thin body, crisp and clean with moderate carbonation.

Mild wheat presence upfront with crisp citrus hop notes.

Finishes clean with a lingering fruity note (passion fruit) and a slightly tart note.

Overall; clean and simple, interesting fruit note due to the passion fruit; very drinkable and thirst quenching.

A great and affordable summer beer!

Bought a sixer of this at a local grocery, hoping for a decent fruity wheat summer quencher. It pours a mostly clear, chill hazed golden yellow body with an average white head that quickly falls away. Minor patchy lacing is left on the glass.

Aroma has some hints of passion fruit, perhaps, but mostly a vague bready fruitiness and a pale wheat malt twang.

Body is light medium with a sparkly carbonation.

Taste has a pale wheat twang that I don't care for. Slightly bready but the carbonation helps drinkability. No tropical fruitiness in the taste, just a hint of vague fruitiness.

Not horrid, but I would pick up a Sam Adams Cherry Wheat before I try this one again.
