Longboard Island LagerLongboard Island Lager
Notes: Longboard Island Lager is a smooth refreshing lager fermented and aged for five weeks at cold temperatures to yield its exceptionally smooth flavor. A delicate, slightly spicy hop aroma complements the malty body of this beer.

3.4/5  rDev +0.3%
look: 3 | smell: 3 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 4 | overall: 3.5

Appearance:
This is a decent pour - head formation is fairly quick. Retention (~1 finger) isn't outstanding but it's adequate; lacing is pretty good. As per the lager style, the brew is translucent. It's golden color is a step above pale.

Smell:
The nose has a lot of citrus and hop character. I detect lemon over a grassy "background" that compliments the hoppiness. A subtle spiciness also seems to be present; it complements the overall package quite nicely.

Taste:
You can definately taste the hops in this one. In terms of balance, I'd say that the lemon is more of a compliment to the dominant hop tones. The grassiness lingers in the aftertaste; think of the spiciness as a nice transitionary flavor between the aforementioned flavors.

Mouthfeel:
The spices lend to the crispness associated with this style. This and the hops culminate in a nice "bite" that is felt all throughout. I would rate the body as medium-light.

Drinkability:
This might make a nice session beer (given the %ABV). I wouldn't suggest pounding it because of the "bite" factor, but I suppose that you could do so if you really wanted to. Some might find the "bite" a bit extreme, but I don't mind it.

Summary:
A friend of mine just literally gave me this beer right after opening it because he thought it was flat. I couldn't turn down a free beer and figured that he might have been right given that the package date was ~7 months prior to the tasting date. After pouring it into a glass and observing the carbonation, I figured that it would be alright to review this as is. I enjoyed the Kona brews when I was in Denver; this one was no different. It's not great, but I enjoy it for what it is given the style. The strong citrus/hop tones were interesting as far as I'm concerned. Try it if you get a chance. I'll likely review this again if i'm able to get my hands on one with a more recent packaging date.

look: 3 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 4 | overall: 4

Appearance:
Pours out to a thin but persistent head. Light yellow gold color. Appears undercarbonated.

Aroma:
Typical pale lager with light biscuity malts and spicy/grassy hops,

Flavor:
Clean, dry and crisp with grainy malts and a nice balance from the hops

Mouthfeel:
Light to medium, Low CO2 for the style but not "flat", actually Smooth and slightly creamy. No astringency or burn. Nice.

Overall:
I Am re-reviewing this on Jul 2-2019. Overall, this is a well made and easy drinking lager. No corny flavors or anything cheap. A slightly malty brew.

I originally sampled this beer on 23 November 2002. I am writing this review from my notes.
Appeance: this is a cloudy yellow lager with a white head
Flavor: There isn't much flavor to speak of
Aroma: This beer isn't aware of what this means.
Well, if your goal is to have beers from all 50 states, this one covers Hawaii.

An OK lager. Light, crisp, but nothing special. Stacked against the great pilsners of the world or similar offerings, this beer is mediocre. But still solid enough to put it head and shoulders above any macro.

12 oz bottle from BevMo. Pours a clear pale golden yellow with a thin white head of foam. Nose of yeast and mild malt. Taste of biscuit and malt up front with some grassiness and a faint floral tone. Little bitterness. Very smooth. Non IPA beers like this don’t get much respect, but this is one of my very favorite American pale lagers. Light and refreshing, yet flavorful. An excellent everyday beer.

Hearty yellow beer, 1/2" white head. Aroma was lager sweet and not much else.

Taste was just like a BMC lager with a bit more sweet edge and all/more barley used. Small hop bite to it, doesn't come off bitter because of that minor sweet stuff. Smooth easy drinker right here.

Bottled on 25JUN18 stamped on bottom left corner of label. 12oz bottle poured into Duvel tulip. Cost $1.50 USD at a store.

Appearance - Very clear bright light gold body with decent carbonation, and a small one finger white head with medium low retention but fairly decent lacing. A swirl readily regenerates a finger of frothy head. 3.75

Smell - Faint corny sweetness, with faint hoppiness over the top of it all. 3.5

Taste - Thin, watery, and faintly cardboard. But actually not unpleasant. A faint but strangely noticeable (for the style) alcohol in the finish. 3.75

Mouthfeel - Light and clean, somewhat refreshing. 4

Overall - Very few light lagers stack up to the macrobrews that have it down to a science, to be honest. This one is no different. 3.5

I'm recreating this post from 4-year beer notes, I do know I liked this amber lager. It's something different among "lagers". It has a bit more of a tang than most lagers, with a pleasant lingering aftertaste. Smooth and light. (#1, 8/2002)

Poured from bottle into pint glass.

Look: Clear, very very light yellow. Poured two and a half fingers of lingering white head. Carbonation visible throughout. Decent lacing while drinking,

Smell: Skunky at first. Then it kind of reminded me of white cheddar cheez it crackers.

Taste: Bland, typical lager flavor. Slightly bread like from the yeast. No fruity taste.

Feel: Very light, but coats the mouth well. Carbonation highly present.

Overall: Average. Nothing impressive. Just a typical lager.

Poured out of a 12 oz bottle into my pokal glass. This beer pours a mainly clear, light to medium pale golden color with lots of little bubbles rising up to the top of the glass. White head is about 2/3 inch thick when first poured before settling to a medium sized ring lining the inside of the glass and some clusters of foam here and there on the beer's surface. Decent lacing. Mild aromas of sweet malt and a hint of citrus hops along with a bit of a grassy herbal smell as well. Tastewise it is pretty much the same, A mildly sweet malt flavor upfront followed with hints of citrus hops and a bit of an herbal quality. Spot on for this style of beer I suppose, this is just not my favorite style of beer or a style I'll go out of my way to drink very often. The flavors just seem a bit bland overall, I wish they were stronger all around and more in your face. Has a fairly crisp, yet smooth, light to medium bodied mouthfeel with moderate to heavy carbonation. I would enjoy drinking this outside on a hot summer day, but otherwise it is not something I'd go out of my way to drink again.
