BEER INFO

Brewed by:
Kona Brewing Co.
Hawaii, United States | website

Style: American Pale Ale (APA)

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Fire Rock Pale Ale is crisp, refreshing “Hawaiian-style” pale ale. Its signature copper color results from the unique blend of specialty roasted malts. The pronounced citrus-floral hop aroma comes from the liberal amounts of Galena, Cascade & Mt.Hood hops added to each brew.

This is among the best american pale ales I've ever had. You can drink one after the other and you won't get tired of them, even if you're not a fan of pale ales.

Clear orange/amber body, jaundiced shallow coarse head that fades to a mere veneer, layers and dots of lace, streams of carbonation. Smell contains orange rind and tropical fruits, flowers, and minerals. The flavor is exclusively made of nearly every 'detail' APA flavor I don't enjoy- orange rind, biscuit malt, raw grain husk, chalk, and a bitter finish with no offsetting sweetness. Body is crisp, lively carbonation, slightly syrupy.
Some good hop stuff on the nose, but the flavor lost the cornucopia melange of fruit notes and brought in distasteful malt. The texture was also good, but overall a disappointing brew.

On tap at Ko Olina Marriott. Not real pale, as others have mentioned however it's a solid offering and will go down just fine as I take in the scenery and awesome weather here in Hawaii.

This pale ale isn’t all that pale. It’s a bold copper color with the typical Kona minimal head. The smell is malty with just a hint of citrus. The flavor is much bolder than the previous two reviews. It has a strong malt flavor that is well balanced by a surprisingly strong hop presence for a semi-mass produced pale ale with a heavier body than most. It has a nice roasted flavor with a very faint hint of possibly orange and a slightly bitter, slightly alcoholic hoppy finish. This is a really nice pale ale with a lot of character, not just for a mass produced pale ale, but for a pale ale in general.

Look: 4-0 - Pours a crystal clear light amber/dark gold color. Left an off white head that stuck around while I fiddled with the laptop camera.
Smell: 3.5 - Got a nice hop aroma with malty notes. Citrus and caramel/toffee.
Taste: 3.75 - Great hoppy citrus flavor and that malt backbone holding it together. Even though it's only 5.8% ABV I'm still able to get that warm alcohol feeling in the back of my mouth.
Feel: 3.75 - A medium bodied and moderate carbonation make this pale ale feel light and bubbly especially when served at fridge temp, as it warms up it's getting a little heavier and giving more malt feel to it.
Overall: 3.75 - Would buy again, was hoping for a lighter crisper taste and got some more malt backbone instead; it was still very enjoyable.

A very nice pale ale from Kona Brewing. I'm going to be taking a trip to the big island this summer, and if this beer is any indication of the brewery's quality, I'll be sampling several of their offerings while there. A very drinkable and easygoing beer that still manages to be quite complex.

Very nice amber hue, hoppy caramel on the nose, hops and caramel is joined by citrus fruit and some light medicinal qualities on the tongue. Lightly bitter finish. Medium body, very smooth.

Quite good.

Clean amber, not too much foam.
Resinous hop in the smell, maybe a note of green apple. Some malt.
Balancing malt in the taste, too, with bitterness and resinous. Quite easy to drink.
Average body, caramel in the afertaste, a bit too much. Then a quite long bitterness.
Some work to do for the aftertaste.

Pours dark golden color, white head. Mild earthy hop aroma. Well balanced flavor. Thinner bodied. drinkable, but nothing special.

Tasted in a pint glass from a 12 oz bottle on April 1, 2016. Look is clear pale copper with a white two finger head and lingering lacing. Smell is hop forward with grain and caramel malt aromas. Taste is hoppy, citrus, juicy fruits, mint with caramel, grain and toasted malt flavors. Feel is medium to light in body with a smooth, clean and slightly dry finish. Much better than the ratings here suggest.

Poured into a shaker pint glass.

Look: Deep clear copper colored body with a thick foamy cream colored head that retains well. Thick bands of lacing in the glass. Beautiful.

Aroma: A heavy malt bill brings sweetness, toffee, and some woodiness. Subtle spicy hops.

Taste: Malt-heavy with spicy hops to balance. Caramel sweetness and earthy hops.

Mouthfeel: Creamy.

Overall: Wow. I like pale ales that have a good malt precence and this is one.

Bummer, I wanted this to be good but it lost all it's hops and just tasted like malty honey. Checked the packaging date and it was 6months old. If I ever come across it again I'll re-rate but this bottle is not good

Poured from a Nov 2015 bottle. A brilliant clearish gold pour with a nice 1 finger head. Lots of carbonation upon pour.

Smell does not reveal much. I pickup the smell of alcohol and grain.

Taste is nearly of a lager. Heavy grain taste that fades into grassy hops for the finish, which leaves a dark pepper taste. Was not what I was expecting and nothing too wowing.

Not a bad mouthfeel. Good amount of refreshing carbonation.

Not a standout.

DATE TASTED: February 14, 2016... GLASSWARE: Brew at the Zoo pint.. OCCASION: A great Valentine's Day ends with SNL and the love of my life... APPEARANCE: clear copper body with a slight bubbly effervescence... a two-finger white cap of a head settles evenly to a hazy, creamy tabletop...lacing is appropriately like surf... AROMA: the Galena hops imbue a spicy, punchy dimension to the grapefruit, citrus and fruits akin to apple and pear... a grittiness lingers, like pepper or prunes... PALATE: light and drinkable, with an aftertaste that suggests maltiness... some fizziness early, but holds a reasonable strength... TASTE: citrus, yes, with the mix of grapefruit, orange peel, coriander, and light spices.... the maltiness is surprising, with biscuit balancing the experience... OVERALL: thanks to Dave for gifting our Super Bowl party with the Kona... a beer that fits in well with the case, but does not stand out in any one facet... the balance is more pronounced than the label suggests... with some fruit and malt, this is not on par with other pales as a stand-alone...

If "Hawaiian-Style" means bland and uninspired, then I've been getting the wrong impression from all those episodes of Hawaii Five-0. No car chases, no sunsets, no pizazz, no exotic bird thieves, no lacing, little color, thin body; just a light, simple, neutrally flavored, ever-so-slightly bitter and mineralic pale ale. On the one hand, this would be a perfectly fine beer for throwing back on the beach, and I do like the label a lot. It's also a good way to tick off Hawaii on your 50-states challenge, if you have one. On the other hand, who needs it?

Poured into pint.
Pours slightly hazy copper/amber beer with 2-finger golden head, so-so retention.
Smell - rather weak, earthy hops and caramel notes.
Taste - toasted, grassy hops, slightly resiny, neutral and dry palate.
Light to medium body, soft carbonation.
Boring.

Pours Copper, with a quickly dispersing head.
Aroma is faint, detection of mild hop and notes of caramel.
Taste is a struggle to find, a little hoppy, slight citrus.
Overall, it leaves a lot to be desired, however, in saying that, I could drink this all night long, just don't go out of your way for it.
Great label!

Poured from the bottle into a snifter.
Pours an average amber color with a finger of tiny bubbly head.
Aromas are bready and some mild yeast. Light aroma.
Flavor is astonishingly weak and thin. Had to stretch to find real flavor, waited for the beer to warm substantially and finally found some mild malt. Nothing off, just no real flavor on my palate.
Mouthfeel was good.
Overall, this beer wasn't bad per se but nearly devoid of flavor and aroma.

Opaque copper-toned amber with fluffy tan head of good retention. Aromas are weak, malty, almost caramelly, for the most part, but I do detect some small measure of grass, resin, and herbal or floral notes. Sweeter malts up front, quite tart throughout, lemony to nearly rindy toward the back, light pepper retro-olfaction. Medium body, sparse, gentle carbonation, on the smoother side.

pours an amberish-orange color into a typical pint glass with very little head. Can smell the typical piney/citrusy smell of a pale ale and IPA. Initial taste is pleasant with slight pine/citrus and little to no aftertaste. Good lacing too. Overall, it is a good solid Pale Ale but harder to find around here compared to Sierra Nevada. Don't really think its worth any price difference either.

Bottle marked September 14, 2015. Pours a beautiful cloudy orange with a little bit of head. Smells of hops and citrus. Smooth feel with some hop bitterness at the end. Very nice. Probably would have pegged this as an IPA if I'd tasted blind, but apparently they're calling it a pale ale.

330ml btl on a 24x4 type mix pack.

gorgeous dark sunset orange pour but very little head, although served colder than normal.

smells very malty but with no depth. low on the hops.

much more balanced than I expected. sweet copper malt on the initial hit with a quick floral hop push into a tart balanced, if undefinable, citrus back bone. finish with nice medium hop bittering.

long, long finish. more malt than hops, balanced but clingy like their other beers.

good quaff, especially for the price (just over $1.20 USD per at Costco). lacks a top end hop depth or intensity I am used to (coming from hopland BC mind toy) but I would take their lagers or IPA over it at the same price

A lovely taste of Hawaii, though I'm not certain it is brewed there. Fire Rock is dark, malt forward, and full of great roasty flavours. Limited hop notes, but that really does not detract from enjoying this beer.

Solid orange-amber color, fitting of the Fire Rock brand. Nice white foam head that leaves decent lacing and maintains a thin layer of film throughout the experience. Slight citrus/tropical malts on the aroma, not overly hoppy which is expected for this pale. Floral notes are most apparent in the taste, accompanied by some light citrus and tropical hops.

Crisp with low carbonation, very drinkable and refreshing.

Middle of the road pale. Drying finish. Don’t plan on ever having another. Wouldn't get again.

I guess I don’t have much more to add to this review right now. This sure ain’t poetry.
Beer reviews can be like that sometimes.
